Chemical Concepts in Pollutant Behavior

Chemical Concepts in Pollutant Behavior

Ian J. Tinsley

The best intermediate-level text on determining the environmental fate and distribution of organic compounds For each chemical introduced into the environment, there is the chance that that chemical will travel from its release point and move through various ecosystems at large. Great distances can be covered; detection has revealed unexpected compounds on mountain peaks and in polar regions. The relatively new field of environmental chemistry seeks to understand and predict these distributions; over its twenty-five years of development, scientists have greatly refined existing knowledge of how organic compounds behave in the world outside the laboratory. Chemical Concepts in Pollutant Behavior, fully updated in this Second Edition, provides a detailed applied chemistry resource for understanding the current state of environmental chemistry. Based on tried-and-true methods developed by the author over years in the classroom, this student-friendly text requires an introductory knowledge of chemistry yet develops in-depth coverage of: *Physical chemical parameters *Sorption *Evaporation *Absorption and bioconcentration *Photochemical processes *Redox processes *Hydrolysis *Metabolic transformation *Synthesis, or how the above processes interact While taking up traditional problems of interactions between water, soil, and air, the text also explores discussions of uptake by plants from soil and absorption by foliage from the air. Though the text remains focused on compound behavior, the author takes a holistic approach to the subject, emphasizing its interdisciplinary nature. Well-referenced and illustrated, Chemical Concepts in Pollutant Behavior, Second Edition represents an excellent text for intermediate students of chemistry as well as an accessible reference for professionals working with environmental issues requiring chemistry expertise.

An Informal Introduction to Gauge Field Theories

An Informal Introduction to Gauge Field Theories

Ian J. R. Aitchison

Cambridge University Press
2007
pokkari
Four forces are dominant in physics: gravity, electromagnetism and the weak and strong nuclear forces. Quantum electrodynamics - the highly successful theory of the electromagnetic interaction - is a gauge field theory, and it is now believed that the weak and strong forces also can be described by generalizations of this type of theory. In this short book Dr Aitchison gives an introduction to these theories, a knowledge of which is essential in understanding modern particle physics. With the assumption that the reader is already familiar with the rudiments of quantum field theory and Feynman graphs, his aim has been to provide a coherent, self-contained and yet elementary account of the theoretical principles and physical ideas behind gauge field theories.
Applied Environmental Economics

Applied Environmental Economics

The complex real-world interactions between the economy and the environment form both the focus of and main barrier to applied research within the field of environmental economics. However, geographical information systems (GIS) allow economists to tackle such complexity head on by directly incorporating diverse datasets into applied research rather than resorting to simplifying and often unrealistic assumptions. This innovative book applies GIS techniques to spatial cost-benefit analysis of a complex and topical land use change problem - the conversion of agricultural land to multipurpose woodland - looking in detail at issues such as opportunity costs, timber yield, recreation, carbon storage, etc., and embracing cost-cutting themes such as the evaluation of environmental preferences and the spatial transfer of benefit functions.
Nuclear Reactions for Astrophysics

Nuclear Reactions for Astrophysics

Describing the processes in stars which produce the chemical elements for planets and life, this book shows how similar processes may be reproduced in laboratories using exotic beams, and how these results can be analyzed. Beginning with one-channel scattering theory, the book builds up to multi-channel reactions. Emphasis is placed on using transfer and breakup reactions to probe structure and predict capture processes, as well as R-matrix methods for modeling compound nucleus dynamics described by Hauser-Feshbach methods. Practical applications are prominent in this book, confronting theory predictions with data throughout. The associated reaction program Fresco is described, allowing readers to apply the methods to practical cases. Each chapter ends with exercises so readers can test their understanding of the materials covered. Supplementary materials at www.cambridge.org/9780521856355 include the Fresco program, input and output files for the examples given in the book, and hints and graphs related to the exercises.
The Illusion of Victory

The Illusion of Victory

Ian J. Bickerton

Melbourne University Press
2011
nidottu
The Illusion of Victory demonstrates that most of the rewards of victory in modern warfare are either exaggerated or false. When the ostensible benefits of victory are examined a generation after a war, it becomes inescapably evident that the defeated belligerent rarely conforms to the demands and expectations of the victor. Consequently, long-term political and military stability is denied to both the victorious power and to the defeated one. As a result, neither victory nor defeat deter further outbreaks of war. This sobering reality is increasingly the case in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Ian Bickerton persuasively argues that as the rhetoric of victory becomes more hollow all countries must adopt creative new approaches to resolving disputes.

Appropriated Pasts

Appropriated Pasts

: Archaeology has been complicit in the appropriation of indigenous peoples' pasts worldwide. While tales of blatant archaeological colonialism abound from the era of empire, the process also took more subtle and insidious forms. Ian McNiven and Lynette Russell outline archaeology's "colonial culture" and how it has shaped archaeological practice over the past century. Using examples from their native Australia— and comparative material from North America, Africa, and elsewhere— the authors show how colonized peoples were objectified by research, had their needs subordinated to those of science, were disassociated from their accomplishments by theories of diffusion, watched their histories reshaped by western concepts of social evolution, and had their cultures appropriated toward nationalist ends. The authors conclude by offering a decolonized archaeological practice through collaborative partnership with native peoples in understanding their past.

A novel cross-cultural exploration of how maritime peoples have engaged with the sea through cosmology, spirituality, and ritual Sentient Seas offers a global perspective on maritime cultures, examining how societies across time and space have understood and interacted with the sea. Synthesizing archaeological evidence, historical documents, and ethnographic accounts, Ian McNiven explores maritime traditions from ancient civilizations in the Middle East and Mediterranean to medieval Europe and Scandinavia to contemporary Indigenous communities in the South Pacific. McNiven investigates diverse cultural practices including shipbuilding, the treatment of shipwrecks and shipwreck victims, and maritime resource use, interpreting the evidence through the perspectives of mariners who understood the seas to be sentient and capable of acting with intentionality. He introduces the concepts of “terrestrial seascapes” and “ontological switching” to illustrate how land-based shrines and votive offerings extend maritime cosmologies and maintain a liminal transition from land to sea. By bridging anthropological and archaeological research with transdisciplinary blue humanities scholarship, Sentient Seas approaches seas as spiritscapes, recontextualizing folkloric beliefs about maritime superstitions. A volume in the series Society and Ecology in Island and Coastal Archaeology, edited by Victor D. Thompson and Scott M. Fitzpatrick
