The Possession Of Lilac Rose The perks and nasty side effects of demonic possession. Lilac Rose was born to a single African American mother in the poorest part of Detroit Michigan. Hunger gnawed at her stomach most of the time because the meager welfare checks and foods stamps mostly went to support her mother's alcohol addiction. She had everything stacked against her but she was determined to succeed in spite of the substandard schools and burned out teachers she encountered. She experienced bullying because of her worn second hand clothes. Her mother was verbally and physically abusive to her. Her one bright spot was her only friend. Then her only friend was gunned down in a senseless drive by shooting. Still, in spite of her grief she relentlessly learned all she could in school and maintained at 4.0 GPA. She stayed late after school finishing an assignment and was raped on the way home. Her anger and rage knew no bounds. Just when things were looking up for her with employment after school in an antique store the anger and rage she carried attracted a demon. A demon named Tantilis. He endowed her with supernatural strength, wisdom gleaned over billions of years, and an incredible singing voice. There is a down side to demonic possession, or so it seemed. She would never be reunited with her friend when she died. Her friend was in heaven and she was destined to spend eternity in hell. Could she find grace and mercy?

A New Approach to Political Speech

A New Approach to Political Speech

Erik J. Olsen

De Gruyter

This provocative book challenges conventional understandings of political speech and its relationship to democracy. Through a focused case study of Donald Trump's role in attempting to overturn the 2020 election and the prosecutions stemming from it, Erik Olsen develops a critique of the prevailing view that political speech is a private right that is only instrumentally related to political action. He advocates instead for a theoretical framework that treats political speech as a form of communicative action and balances the protection of free expression with the need to safeguard core democratic practices and processes. He thus outlines a more robust First Amendment jurisprudence that can better defend both public liberty and democratic institutions from authoritarian threats in the current era of democratic backsliding.

This Is Only a Test

B.J. Hollars; W. Scott Olsen; Brian Oliu; Steven Church

Indiana University Press
2016
pokkari
On April 27, 2011, just days after learning of their pregnancy, B. J. Hollars, his wife, and their future son endured the onslaught of an EF-4 tornado. There, while huddled in a bathtub in their Alabama home, mortality flashed before their eyes. With the last of his computer battery, Hollars began recounting the experience, and would continue to do so in the following years, writing his way out of one disaster only to find himself caught up in another. Tornadoes, drownings, and nuclear catastrophes force him to acknowledge the inexplicable, while he attempts to overcome his greatest fear—the impossibility of protecting his newborn son from the world's cruelties. Hollars creates a constellation of grief, tapping into the rarely acknowledged intersection between fatherhood and fear, sacrifice and safety, and the humbling effect of losing control of our lives.

State Violence and Democracy in Latin America

State Violence and Democracy in Latin America

Brett J. Kyle; Tricia D. Olsen; Andrew G. Reiter

Springer Nature Switzerland AG
2026

This book explores why state violence has proliferated across Latin America despite the adoption of extensive political and legal reforms intended to deter such violence. The authors argue that legacy conditions (uneven state capacity, weak rule of law, and socioeconomic inequalities) are met with what they term "public order violence," which results in weakened democratic institutions and a cycle of violence that is difficult to escape. Combining in-depth case studies with new cross-national data, the book provides a comprehensive analysis of the history, evolution, and contemporary architecture of state violence in the region. Individual chapters explain how public order violence permeates everyday policing, border security, and economic growth. The conclusion outlines the legal foundations of state violence and pathways toward a more peaceful future. This book is essential reading for scholars of Latin American politics, political violence, transitional justice, civil-military relations, democratization, international relations and security studies.
Who Will Teach?

Who Will Teach?

Will America find enough good teachers to staff its public schools? How can we ensure that all our children will be taught by skilled professionals? The policies that determine who teaches today are a confusing and often conflicting array that includes tougher licensing requirements, higher salaries, mandatory master's degrees, merit pay, and alternative routes to certification. Who Will Teach? examines these policies and separates those that work from those that backfire. The authors present an intriguing portrait of America's teachers and reveal who they are, who they have been, and who they will be. Using innovative statistical methods to track the professional lives of more than 50,000 college graduates, the book describes, in many cases for the first time, just how prospective, current, and former teachers respond to the incentives and disincentives they face. The authors, a group of noted educators, economists, and statisticians, find cause for serious concern. Few academically talented college graduates even try teaching, and many of those who do leave quickly, never to return. Current licensing requirements stifle innovation in training and dissuade many potentially talented teachers at the outset. But Who Will Teach? shows that we can reverse these trends if we get the incentives right. Although better salaries are essential, especially for new teachers, money is not enough. Potential teachers should be offered alternative paths into the classroom. School districts should improve their recruiting strategies. Licensing criteria should assess teaching skills, not just academic achievement and number of courses completed. The authors offer a promising strategy based on high standards and substantial rewards.

Evidence-Based Medicine and the Changing Nature of Health Care

Drawing on the work of the Roundtable on Evidence-Based Medicine, the 2007 IOM Annual Meeting assessed some of the rapidly occurring changes in health care related to new diagnostic and treatment tools, emerging genetic insights, the developments in information technology, and healthcare costs, and discussed the need for a stronger focus on evidence to ensure that the promise of scientific discovery and technological innovation is efficiently captured to provide the right care for the right patient at the right time. As new discoveries continue to expand the universe of medical interventions, treatments, and methods of care, the need for a more systematic approach to evidence development and application becomes increasingly critical. Without better information about the effectiveness of different treatment options, the resulting uncertainty can lead to the delivery of services that may be unnecessary, unproven, or even harmful. Improving the evidence-base for medicine holds great potential to increase the quality and efficiency of medical care. The Annual Meeting, held on October 8, 2007, brought together many of the nation's leading authorities on various aspects of the issues - both challenges and opportunities - to present their perspectives and engage in discussion with the IOM membership.
