Cladistics & Archaeology

Cladistics & Archaeology

Michael J O'Brien

Cladistics is a method used in biology and paleobiology to establish phylogeny: what produced what and in what order. It is a very specific method, developed in Germany in the 1950s and currently the primary phylogenetic method in the world. Cladistics has also been applied to such fields as historical linguistics and manuscript history. If things evolve in a nonrandom way, they may be appropriately studied using this method. In Cladistics and Archaeology, Michael O’Brien and Lee Lyman explore the application of cladistics to archaeology by considering artifacts as human phenotypic characters. Their fundamental premise is that particular kinds of characters (style, artifact type, tool) can be used to create historically meaningful nested taxa. Further, they argue that this approach offers a means of building connections and 'life histories' of archaeological artifacts. In order to make a potentially difficult topic more readily comprehensible, the authors have organized the book as something of a primer. Cladistics and Archaeology includes many figures to illustrate basic concepts, as well as a case study that shows a step-by-step application of cladistics to archaeology.

A Bibliography of the Black Sparrow Press Archive: Bruce Peel Special Collections Library, University of Alberta
This bibliography describes in detail a valuable collection comprising archival materials related to the Black Sparrow Press from its founding in April 1966 to November 1970. The press was one of the most important private presses on the west coast of the United States, and it endured for 36 years. Its importance came from publishing some of the most avant-garde writers of the period. Their editions, published in limited runs, represent some of the most remarkable examples of fine press work in the late twentieth century. Publisher John Martin sold his collection of D. H. Lawrence first editions in order to finance Black Sparrow and to regularly publish Charles Bukowski's poetry, among works of other innovative writers, including John Ashbery, Diane Wakoski, Charles Reznikoff, and Kenneth Koch. Totalling over a thousand items, the Black Sparrow Press Archive includes manuscript drafts, typescripts, corrected proofs and galleys, letters, posters, original artwork, photographs, master reel-to-reel recordings, and various peripheral materials related to publications of the press.

While the great wave of Irish immigrants which arrived on our shores in the mid- to late-nineteenth century is well known, and their role in the industrialization of the United States is widely recognized, the important role they played in the original settlement of this country is frequently overlooked. The author's purpose in compiling this volume was to show beyond any doubt the magnitude of the Irish involvement in the founding of the United States. To that end he discusses the various causes of Irish immigration, both voluntary and involuntary, and proceeds to identify at least six hundred Irish men and women who were in America before 1700. The bulk of the text concerns New England, although there is some mention of Virginia and other colonies. There is a wealth of biographical data given in this well documented and fully indexed volume.

pokkari
Engagingly written and packed with illustrations, Early Ireland offers an authoritative introduction to the riches of Irish prehistory - a span of eight thousand years from the end of the Ice Age to the first centuries of the Christian era. It provides a clear account of the development of Irish society from its beginnings as a postglacial culture of hunters and gatherers, through the glory of its golden age in the second millennium BC, to the technological advances stimulated by the discovery of iron and, in the last centuries BC, the growth of a Celtic art style of unrivalled power and individuality. Many of the developments in research and excavation detailed in the book were carried out or initiated by the author himself. In Early Ireland he encapsulates in inimitable style the fruits of more than three decades spent imparting his love and knowledge of Ireland, its people and its antiquities.

When O.J. Simpson last visited Las Vegas to attend the wedding of a friend he didn't know he would spend the next nine years as a guest of the state. Sports memorabilia, most of it personal in nature, had been in his possession for years. Including the infamous "Dodge Suit" that he wore on the day he was acquitted in the murder trial. Simpson didn't know where everything went, but he had his suspicions. When a memorabilia dealer called in late 2007 saying he knew who had stolen the merchandise and would set up a sting in Las Vegas, Simpson was in. Simpson assembled a small group of friends who would help him recover the memorabilia. The problem was that he asked one of them to bring a gun, making it an armed robbery. Simpson was arrested and charged with multiple felony counts before being convicted and sentenced to a minimum of nine years in prison. Others in his group made plea bargains with the state. This is the account of the person responsible for providing the guns, as well as court testimony from Simpson himself explaining how he did nothing wrong. He followed the law and just wanted to get his stolen memorabilia back. His way, regardless of the consequences.
