Not Your Parents' Offering Plate

People don't give to church because we don't offer them a compelling vision of the good their giving will achieve. Hearing a young attorney speak of the faithbased reasons for which he had just made a substantial monetary gift to a community youth center, Clif Christopher asked the speaker if he would consider making a similar contribution to the congregation of which he was an active member. "Lord, no they would not know what to do with it" was the answer. That, in a nutshell, describes the problem churches are facing in their stewardship efforts, says Christopher. Unlike leading nonprofit agencies and institutions, we too often fail to convince potential givers that their gifts will have impact and significance. In this book, Christopher lays out the main reasons for this failure to capture the imagination of potential givers, including our frequent failure simply to ask. Written with the needs of pastors and stewardship teams in mind, Not Your Parents' Offering Plate provides immediate, practical guidance to all who seek to help God's people be better stewards of their resources.

As a young Haloti fairy living on top of a maple tree, Thula is counting down the days until she reaches adulthood. Her whole life changes when a Grimmox fairy breeches the long-standing peace treaty by crossing their border. Thula isn't content to watch the destruction of her world, and volunteers for a new military program to counter the incursion. But once in training, she learns the program isn't about defense at all. It's about war, and all of the Haloti people are at risk of annihilation. Thula must look to the most unlikely of allies, the Grimmox, to save their world. But they refuse to fight as it goes against everything they believe in. After receiving a vision from the sons of God, she learns this is their last chance to make peace. She was raised by the Haloti, but now sees the world through the eyes of the Grimmox, and is the only one they can trust with this task. If she fails, God will erase the Haloti and Grimmox from the planet. She only has one day to unite them all.

The word "tithing" comes from the Latin decimus (decem, ten) and meant a tax or tax that offered two distinct aspects: one civil and one ecclesiastical. In the civilian, it was the king's right to receive 1O% of the value of all items that were the subject of trafficked goods and which, if they arrived at port, were called tithes of the sea; or dry port tithes if they entered by land, where the almojarifazgo was not established, a tribute paid for the goods leaving the kingdom, for those that entered it, or for those that were in transit from one kingdom to another in Spain. In the ecclesiastical, tithing consisted of a tribute that had to be given to the Church and used to be one-tenth of production, both agricultural and livestock. And we say that it used to be because, sometimes, tithing was not mathematically what it meant grammatically: the tenth, because when it was not tithing it was superior to it, even if this happened on rare occasions. In any case, the tax, burden, tax, contribution or whatever it wants to be called, was known as tithing and the tenoner or dezmero to which it decimated: the taxpayer.

The monetary fund that the apostle Paul organized among his Gentile congregations for the Jewish-Christian community in Jerusalem was clearly an important endeavor to Paul; discussion of it occupies several prominent passages in his letters. In this book David Downs carefully investigates that offering from historical, sociocultural, and theological standpoints. Downs first pieces together a chronological account of Paul's fund-raising efforts on behalf of the Jerusalem church, based primarily on information from the Pauline epistles. He then examines the sociocultural context of the collection, including gift-giving practices in the ancient Mediterranean world relating to benefaction and care for the poor. Finally, Downs explores how Paul framed this contribution rhetorically as a religious offering consecrated to God.

It is my privilege to make available this excellent book on the "Jewish Offerings and Other Ministry" in this reprint. Arthur J. Marks does an excellent job of relating the offerings of Leviticus to our blessed Lord Jesus. It is not a book for entertainment or casual reading as he goes into depth with the subject.

Money mattered to the apostle Paul. One economic endeavor of signal importance for Paul was the monetary fund that he organized among the largely Gentile congregations of his mission for the Jewish-Christian community in Jerusalem.David J. Downs investigates this offering from a variety of angles. He begins with an attempt to piece together a relative chronological account, based primarily on information from Paul's epistles, of the apostle's fundraising efforts on behalf of the Jerusalem church. After reconstructing this complex story, Downs examines the socio-cultural context of the collection, focusing on analogous forms of giving among ancient pagan and Jewish voluntary associations, including practices of benefaction, common funds, care for the poor, and translocal economic links among these associations. With this chronological and socio-cultural context in mind, the author then explores Paul's use of several cultic metaphors to frame the contribution as a religious offering consecrated to God. Drawing on recent work in the field of metaphor theory, Downs contends that Paul metaphorically frames his readers' responsive participation in the collection as an act of cultic worship, thus underscoring the point that the fulfillment of mutual obligations within the community of believers results in praise, not human benefactors, but to God, the one from whom all benefactions come. This rhetorical strategy suggests that even the very human action of raising money for those in material need originates in "the grace ( charis) of God" and will eventuate in "thanksgiving ( charis) to God" (2 Cor 9:14-15).
