John Brande Trend, the first Professor of Spanish in Cambridge in 1933, arrived at his Chair by a circuitous route through a variety of disciplines, encountering a host of prominent people in pre-war political, cultural and intellectual life. It was this wider experience that made his teaching so unique and makes his story central to the period through which he lived. At Cambridge with the doomed generation who were to perish in the First World War, Trend studied Natural Sciences but fell under the spell of the musicologist Edward Dent, who became his lifelong friend. A brilliant linguist and musician, it was music that took Trend to Spain in 1919 to unearth ancient manuscripts and to write articles for London magazines. He fell in love with a country undergoing a cultural, intellectual and political transformation that culminated in the establishment of the Second Republic in 1931. He became a close friend of Manuel de Falla, whose music he introduced to the British public, as well as of the ill-fated poet, Federico García Lorca, and other luminaries of the optimistic 1920s. After the euphoria of the Republic and the subsequent Civil War, he never returned to Spain but did much to help Spanish exiles and refugees. Academically he extended his interests to Central and South America, one of the first Hispanists to do so. Trend's books on Spanish literature and music were vivid and evocative, as was his style of teaching, inspired by the philosophy of the Spanish educationalist, Francisco Giner de los Ríos. Drawing on Trend's prolific and hitherto unknown correspondence with many celebrated figures, the book depicts his extraordinary personality and achievements, and his first-hand involvement in important events of the period.

When the prize-winning garden is destroyed, JB recruits the help of his friends Sammy and Benny, who quickly find that many other gardens in the neighborhood have also been destroyed. But with no leads, JB and his friends find themselves at a dead end, especially when JB and Sammy end up playing babysitter to the annoying next-door neighbor, Casey. JB soon discovers that Casey is a child genius who has been doing some evil scientist modifications to the once innocent garden decor that is set out to destroy any garden, and any person, who stands in their way.

Most people getting money know that it's always the closest people to you that commit the worst offenses. JB is confronted head on by treachery but never dreams that it goes as deep as it does. We are truly dealing with a criminal mastermind in Mr. Bentham. But it will take all of his brain resources to survive what's in store. This is the story of JB and how he made his money.
Things in the family after all this time are working and not working. Some old alliances have crumbled, while some new ones have stood the test of time. We find JB boldly making a move without the usual consent of his organization. Also, some businesses are no longer able to be maintained, while others are being threatened to be stolen. JB is fighting to keep his family relevant in this time of change. With an iron fist he has begun ruling, and not all appreciate it. While staying totally loyal, he finds himself questioning what true loyalty really is. As he contemplates taking sides, moves are being made against him. The lines between who is loyal and who isn't are becoming more blurred by the day. True, new business ventures are even more lucrative than before. But new partners are even more treacherous than the old. JB is learning that not all murderers walk with a limp. In the boardrooms of America, JB and Associates is a force. This book addresses the question: what happens after the betrayal? And it comes after the orgy of Why hasn't JB already disappeared (Delere Press, 2017): keeping in mind that the title is in the form of a statement, and not a question; even though the quest constantly haunts what is stated, and remains with us -- quite possibly -- as l'intelligence du mal. For, even as writing on someone, even in homage, is always already a writing on, writing over, perhaps even a writing-out of someone, it is also an addition of, an adding of, something onto; where writing is a scratching into a surface, at the very same time as something is scratched out of a material, from a medium. Thus, writing on JB, about JB, is quite possibly literally writing JB's disappearance. And, where what is read, can be read, is perhaps what allows itself to be seen, to be glimpsed at -- the remains of the skin which comes to us; the simulacrum, as it were. Where the very disappearance happens in the appearance: otherwise we could not even know of its possibility. Where the very art in the notion of « the whole art is to know how to disappear before dying and instead of dying lies in the artifice called disappearance itself. Which opens the possibility that my reconciliation with JB -- our making up, as it were -- could lie in nothing other than make up itself.
