Intended for both students and practitioners in public administration who want to communicate more effectively with a variety of audiences, this book offers clear, easy-to-understand guidelines on how to write more clearly, concisely, and coherently, as well as correctly. It covers the basics of good English and applies those basics to general forms (such as memos, letters, and e-mails) and more specific forms (such as newsletters, proposals, budget justifications, and rules) used in the public sector.

One of the world's most respected religion journalists profiles New York's Archbishop Timothy Dolan, one of the country's--and possibly the world's--most important Catholic leaders through lengthy exclusive interviews. Unique among the current leadership of the Catholic Church, Archbishop Dolan shares his insightful perspective in this series of conversations on the present and future of Catholicism. In these pages Dolan shares a perspective which is typically not part of the information an average person would know through today's media. This omission often leaves outsiders with a terribly flawed grasp of what's actually happening in the Church. Legitimate stories on, for example, abuse and Church authority can't be dissolved by reactive conspiracy theories about how the media is out to get the Catholic Church. That said, if these scandals are all there is to the Catholic Church, why would anyone bother being Catholic? It may not be surprising that there are an estimated 22 million ex-Catholics out there, yet it is revealing that even more people have chosen to remain with the Church. Tens of millions of Americans, and hundreds of millions more around the world, still turn to the Church for inspiration, for its sacramental life, for its experience of community and service. In every diocese in America you can find parishes that are flourishing. The faith represented there is not an exaggerated religious frenzy that feeds an uncritical view of the Church. Catholics are nothing if not sober realists about the humanity of their institutions and leaders. They see the Church not as a debating society or a multinational enterprise, but a family--with all the flaws and dysfunction, but also all the joy and life, of families everywhere. This is why Archbishop Dolan is such an important part of the Church's emerging landscape. In A People of Hope Dolan is seen at his best, capturing an upbeat, hopeful, affirming Catholicism that's the untold story about the Church today. As readers spend time with Dolan here, they may find that his love for people and zest for friendship is what's truly fundamental about the man, not a PR device calculated to conceal some other agenda. Dolan can and does draw lines in the sand when he believes that core matters of Catholic identity are at stake. He's well aware that we live in a deeply secular world in the West, in which powerful pressures, both subtle and overt, seek to blur the counter-cultural message of Catholicism on many fronts. One key to Dolan's character, however, is that changing hearts, not knocking heads, is always his first instinct. John Allen draws out a picture of future trends by exploring where Dolan wants to lead, and how will a Church that increasingly bears his imprint look and feel? To understand this, what's really necessary is to get inside his head and then let him speak for himself. To that end Allen frames questions in a way that allows Dolan to expand on the topic himself as much as possible. The result is a book more "with" Dolan than a book "about" him, which is indeed the best way to understand the man. At the end, one can agree or disagree with Dolan's outlook, but one may at least be better equipped to understand why thoughtful modern women and men might still believe there's something worth considering in the Catholic message. Whatever the future may have in store for Dolan--staying in New York until he dies, being called to Rome to work in a senior Vatican post, or something else entirely--he will be a force in the Catholic Church both nationally and internationally for some time to come, and it's well worth trying to discern what that might mean.
The Presidency and Economic Policy

The Presidency and Economic Policy

The health of the American economy is a topic of discussion among undergraduate students in public policy and the American presidency. Policymakers and citizens also are concerned with economic prosperity and the problems associated with unemployment, taxation, health care, trade, and inflation as well as other economic issues. While the study of the economy may be a primary concern for scholars, most people care more about how economic performance and presidential economic policymaking impacts their daily lives. Therefore, the purpose of this book is to provide undergraduates and laypersons with a blueprint of the performance of the economy and the ability of the president to manage economic policy. Little has been published on the specific nexus between the presidency and economic policy. The goal of this updated and streamlined text is to provide students with an examination of the historical and substantive policy issues that shape the relationship between the American presidency and the economy.

Gradient elution demystified Of the various ways in which chromatography is applied today, few have been as misunderstood as the technique of gradient elution, which presents many challenges compared to isocratic separation. When properly explained, however, gradient elution can be less difficult to understand and much easier to use than often assumed. Written by two well-known authorities in liquid chromatography, High-Performance Gradient Elution: The Practical Application of the Linear-Solvent-Strength Model takes the mystery out of the practice of gradient elution and helps remove barriers to the practical application of this important separation technique. The book presents a systematic approach to the current understanding of gradient elution, describing theory, methodology, and applications across many of the fields that use liquid chromatography as a primary analytical tool. This up-to-date, practical, and comprehensive treatment of gradient elution: * Provides specific, step-by-step recommendations for developing a gradient separation for any sample * Describes the best approach for troubleshooting problems with gradient methods * Guides the reader on the equipment used for gradient elution * Lists which conditions should be varied first during method development, and explains how to interpret scouting gradients * Explains how to avoid problems in transferring gradient methods With a focus on the use of linear solvent strength (LSS) theory for predicting gradient LC behavior and separations by reversed-phase HPLC, High-Performance Gradient Elution gives every chromatographer access to this useful tool.

This issue of Plough Quarterly explores the effects of technology on human flourishing. Whether its artificial intelligence, genome editing, Big Tech monopolies, or social media–induced depression, we live in a world that is being reshaped by technology from the ground up. How do we stay human? This issue of Plough Quarterly addresses challenges ranging from the lure of transhumanism to the erosion of silence by the smartphone. Technophobia is no answer, our contributors agree, but neither is a refusal to tackle real dangers. They ask: Why not try living without a computer or a television? Why give tablets to children when Steve Jobs refused to give them to his kids? Why write using a keyboard when you could wield a fountain pen? Technological asceticism of this kind won’t solve society-wide dilemmas. But it can help us maintain the spiritual independence needed to respond to them rightly. Also in this issue: original poetry by Jacob Stratman; reviews of new books by Ian Johnson, Steve Roud, and Markus Rathey; insights from Wendell Berry, Viktor Frankl, Ivan Illich, Carl Sandburg, C. S. Lewis, Alfred Delp, and Christoph Blumhardt; and art by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Jack Baumgartner, Nicholas Roerich, Rachel Newling, Kay Polk, Suellen McCrary, Stephen Scott Young, Jie Wei Zhou, Kiéra Malone, Torkel Pettersson, Mari Rast, Albrecht Dürer, René Magritte, and Kyle T. Webster. Plough Quarterly features stories, ideas, and culture for people eager to put their faith into action. Each issue brings you in-depth articles, interviews, poetry, book reviews, and art to help you put Jesus’ message into practice and find common cause with others.

About the book: Far ranging in its geography, Waypoints is a collection of poems that mark the itinerary of a poet wanderer--in matter and mind--over many years. As he acknowledges in his statement about the book, John often writes about places he has been because, like a GPS system, they reflect the ups and downs, turns and twists (tone and tenor), of the mental and emotional life-journey he has been taking. Believing there is no better teacher and no better resource for the imagination than nature, John is most grounded when he is in some remote place, enjoying the challenge it presents and the adventure it becomes. These poems take the reader to unique locales around the world, from Port Townsend, Washington, where John now lives, to Nepal, Africa, and South America, where he has trekked. In each case, the presence of place informs his themes, such as time, family, and natural world wonder. Placed in the pages' margins, the addition of latitude/longitude coordinates for the actual settings of the poems adds a more specific geographic level that curious readers may wish to explore on Google Earth. Included with John's trek to Machu Picchu with his son are the actual photographs he took on their journey that inspired his haiku.Whether formal or not, with rhyme or without, the poems in this volume will challenge the reader to examine his or her own paths and the stops along them that have made the most impression--questioning how and why such experiences enable us to move forward in a reflective and grateful manner.John is the former curator of historic maps at Princeton University. A graduate of Syracuse's Writing Program in 1976, John offers Waypoints as his first collection. Why did he wait 40 years? Let's say that life intervened--and a lot of travel.

The Lost Music of Fernando Sor: Complete Works for Harpolyre Transcribed for Guitar
The Lost Music of Fernando Sor Harpolyre Transcriptions for Guitar by John Doan. Fernando Sor (1778-1839), beloved as the "Father of the Classical Guitar," composed ten forgotten works that for the first time in nearly 200 years are presented here as music for the six-string guitar. Lost to time, this remarkable music has been overlooked along with the little known and misunderstood instrument that they were composed for in 1830 - the three necked, twenty-one string harpolyre, originally dubbed the "Perfected Guitar." John Doan, Emmy-Nominee, award-winning recording artist, pioneer of the twenty string harp guitar, and professor of music at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, presents a forgotten chapter in Sor's music as well as the guitar's history. This striking music is comprised of six short studies on par with Sor's similar student pieces as well as four major works each of which are serious guitar pieces of length, musical depth and complexity all deserving of high recognition. In addition to the nearly fifty pages of music presented separately in notation and tablature, Doan provides general remarks for each piece referencing the intended special harpolyre effects sought in the original music, a detailed musical analysis, and transcription footnotes. This book is ideal for anyone from concert artists to students, and is a must-have for the bookshelf of every guitar teacher. Special accommodation is given to players of the eight to ten string guitar and harp guitar with access to an extended bass range, allowing for Sor's music to be played as intended. Doan spent over a decade following Fernando Sor's path through Spain, France, England and Russia, walking the same streets, meeting with some of the world's leading authorities of Sor's life and music. Doan is the first to record all of these works on The Lost Music of Fernando Sor and did so on an original harpolyre. His follow up recording Homage to Fernando Sor is a reflective musical portrait of Sor's life conceived and performed in his style upon an original Panormo guitar that may have been personally associated with Sor. Much of Delicate Arch is the result of a 6,000-mile trip my wife and I took in the fall of 2019, when we visited many national parks and monuments. Previous and subsequent journeys have expanded its scope. My first experience of the national parks occurred over sixty years ago during a summer road trip with my mother and three sisters. I never forgot that first view of the Grand Canyon. The immensity of Time, the diversity of Nature, Man's capacity for wonder-in our national parks and monuments you experience that trinity for yourself. It is spiritual and holy in the truest sense. I thought that poems fostered by photographs was the best means for me to convey my own experiences. Reader, if you have not yet had the adventure, this book is an invitation to do so. If you have, then your own memories of these places will find resonance here. Seeing is believing. Parks and monuments included are Arches, Bryce, Casa Grande Ruins, Crater Lake, Craters of the Moon, Dry Tortugas, Everglades, Glacier, Grand Canyon (North and South Rims), Great Basin, Hagerman Fossil Beds, Hells Canyon, Kings Canyon, Lewis and Clark, Montezuma Castle, Mount Rainier, North Cascades, Olympic, Saguaro, Sequoia, Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Zion. The book includes twenty-three pages of original color photographs.

The Finger of God

The Finger of God

Vincent John Delany

The Alpha Press Ltd
2009
nidottu
The Finger of God sets out to describe how God's existence impacts upon humanity. All people are implicated in an unfolding Divine Plan governing their individual destiny, and that of Planet Earth. This Divine Plan's outworking and inevitable fulfillment is discussed from a biblical perspective, with special reference to contrasting actions and narratives of good and evil. Prime themes are the issue of separation between Man and God, occasioned by disobedience; divine overtures, often overlooked; and the potential for reconciliation. The context for discussion is the issue of Christian religiosity - how it is viewed and practiced not only by the Christian world at large, but also by its formal practitioners and religious leaders. The constant reality of a spiritually present dynamic kingdom is contrasted with the contradictory discordant voices of visible churches. A fundamental thread throughout the work is the necessity to promote doing the right thing (what the Bible refers to as righteousness) - toward our fellow human beings, and especially to God - rather than to follow mere religious precepts. Transformation is brought about by recognizing that the incarnation, death and resurrection of Jesus lies at the heart of salvation and immortality. A reasoned guide is presented as to ongoing and future conflicts between light and darkness, and under what circumstances a righteous divine victory will emerge whereby God's intentions are successfully implemented in a new, perfect environment for the eternal benefit of humankind.
