The Short Stories of John Joseph Mathews, an Osage Writer

The Short Stories of John Joseph Mathews, an Osage Writer

Susan Kalter presents seventeen previously unpublished short stories by John Joseph Mathews and skillfully intertwines literary analysis, author biography, and archival research with his journals and personal correspondence. Mathews is considered one of the founders and shapers of the twentieth-century Native American novel, yet literary history has largely ignored his work. An Osage writer from Oklahoma, Mathews also spent time in Los Angeles and Europe. The stories in this volume were written at the dawn of the nuclear age by an author who exposed the social dynamics of an emerging world order, an author who had also published explicitly about the ways he observed the East Coast establishment suppressing southwestern writers. This work shows us the aesthetics we missed out on as a result. Topics range from adulterous murder to Cherokee removal, from the thrill of the hunt to the cultural impasses between U.S. citizens in Mexico and their hosts, from the modern Middle East to the fantastical future. The stories bear the consciousness of a postwar world-its confusions and regrets, its orthodoxies and hypocrisies-as well as the mark of a practiced and prolific writer. The Short Stories of John Joseph Mathews, an Osage Writer sheds light on the complexity of Native American experiences of the last century and the ripple of these stories today.

Readers today often express an interest in reading something ""real,"" just as many movie goers look for films ""based on a true story."" One cannot find anything more real than this book. Every contributor is invested in its vision, and each one personally offers to help readers. In this sense, this book's impact goes far beyond the pages. Joe DeFazio is the point person and his humbly expressed record of what he is able to accomplish for other suffering veterans is nothing short of heroic. Bruce McDaniel, a multi-decorated medic, is also an understated hero who, with his wife and family, has extended a life of compassion long after the Vietnam War's end into today, taking refugee children into their home to love and rear. His own thoughtful reflections on the war and its aftermath in his afterword to this book and his own Walk through the Valley: The Spiritual Journey of a Vietnam War Medic and The Hardest Part: Homecoming Stories from the Vietnam War bear out Joe's concerns and example. You won't come away from this brief book the same. It will widen your vision of how you too can help.

Urban Warrior is the story of one man's mission to "Change the world starting with Detroit." This biography begins with the passion of John George as he tells his story of trying to protect his children and family from the blight and degradation caused by drug dealers and crime surrounding his home. While John takes it upon himself to bring order and a safe environment to his neighborhood he soon discovers a bigger problem. The injustice in his community is pervasive throughout Detroit - it is a mission he will take on with a belief that the impossible is possible John George's own endorsement gives the reader the best perspective of the vivid portrayal of his journey and the dynamic journalistic style used by the author. "With only a Bic lighter illuminating their path, they tried to negotiate the fallen beams and garbage. The hole was filled with discarded mattresses that were beds for the homeless and a resource for prostitutes. They could only hold their breath for so long before the putrid smell of urine and decomposition would fill their lungs. "Man, you are really crazy?" I remember that day like it was yesterday but when I read this excerpt in Urban Warrior, I felt like I was there for the first time, searching through the decay and envisioning what tomorrow would look like. Each chapter flows from one to the other, not just telling the story of Blight Busters but bringing it to life in just the way I feel I have lived it. Kishell has done more that capture my sentiments - she has embraced the emotion and personal depth of what I feel. In her own way, Kishell has made the impossible, possible. I am not a writer or a poet but I am devoted to my mission to rebuild Detroit and Kishell has spoken with my spirit bringing to life this passion of mine in a way I would never be able to in written word. As you read Urban Warrior I hope you are instilled with the same passion and become to know better this corner of Northwest Detroit, where I call home. I thank you for supporting our mission and ask that you continue on the journey with me and my friends on the sidewalks of Detroit rebuilding it one house, one street, one neighborhood at a time. Peace John George Kishell, has written also under the name of Lynne Kishel Huff with the published non-fiction parenting book, Thank You for All You've Done for me. She is an advocate for justice and youth and recipient of the Unsung Hero's Recognition for the work she has done within the community.
