Examine the New Testament from within the living tradition of the Catholic ChurchIn this addition to the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture, two well-respected New Testament scholars interpret the Gospel of John in its historical and literary setting as well as in light of the Church's doctrinal, liturgical, and spiritual tradition. They unpack the wisdom of the Fourth Gospel for the intellectual and spiritual transformation of its readers and connect the Gospel with a range of witnesses throughout the whole history of Catholicism. The CCSS relates Scripture to Christian life today, is faithfully Catholic, and is supplemented by features designed to help pastoral ministers, lay readers, and students better comprehend the Bible and use it more effectively.Commentary features include:? Biblical text from the New American Bible, Revised Edition (NABRE)? References to the Catechism, the Lectionary, and related biblical texts? Theological insights from Church fathers, saints, and popes? Reflection and application sections for daily Christian living? Suggested resources and an index of pastoral subjectsAttractively packaged and accessibly written, the CCSS aims to help readers understand their faith more deeply, nourish their spiritual life, and share the good news with others.

What's Ahead in Education?: An Analysis of the Policies of the Obama Administration illuminates the educational views of President Barack Obama. This is done by studying his life to date, his writings and speeches, as well as his initiatives thus far, in the field of education. His unique educational background and public service prior to assuming the presidency offers a number of clues as to how he will perform as President. Attention is also paid to those individuals such as his father, mother, his wife, Michelle, and his Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan. By studying his early steps in developing the stimulus package, the Race to the Top, and a blue print for reauthorizing No Child Left Behind, readers can better understand the likely future of the President's education initiatives.

Hegel remarks somewhere that all great world-historic facts and personages appear, so to speak, twice. He forgot to add: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce … (Karl Marx 1852) In the face of the continuing national tragedy of the inequality, poverty and unemployment which have triggered rising working- class discontent around the country, the ANC announced a `second phase’ of the `national democratic revolution’ to deal with the challenges. Ironically, the ANC post-Mangaung has resolved to preserve the core tenets of the minerals-energy-financial complex that defined racial capitalism – while at the same time ratcheting up the revolutionary rhetoric to keep the working class and marginalised onside. If the `first phase’ was a tragedy of the unmet expectations of the majority, is the `second phase’ likely to be a farce? The chapters in this volume are written by experts in their fields and address issues of politics, power and social class; economy, ecology and labour; public policy and social practice; and South Africa beyond its borders. They examine some of these challenges, and indicate that they are as much about the defective content of policies as their poor implementation. The third volume of the New South African Review continues the series by providing in-depth analyses of the key issues facing our country today.
