Describes the Coastal Louisiana Risk Assessment (CLARA) model developed by RAND to estimate flood depths and damage that occurs as a result of major storms in Louisiana's coastal region. CLARA made it possible to evaluate potential projects for inclusion in the Louisiana's 2012 Coastal Master Plan on the basis of how well they reduce flood damage over the next fifty years. Also describes damage reduction provided by the final Master Plan.

Most observers agree that marriage in America has been changing. Some think it is in decline, that the growth of individualism has made it increasingly difficult to achieve satisfying and stable relationships. Others believe that changes, such as increasing gender equality, have made marriage a better arrangement for men as well as women.Based on two studies of marital quality in America twenty years apart, this book takes a middle view, showing that while the divorce rate has leveled off, spouses are spending less time together—people may be “bowling alone” these days, but married couples are also eating alone. Indeed, the declining social capital of married couples—including the fact that couples have fewer shared friends—combined with the general erosion of community ties in American society has had pervasive, negative effects on marital quality. At the same time, family income has increased, decision-making equality between husbands and wives is greater, marital conflict and violence have declined, and the norm of lifelong marriage enjoys greater support than ever. The authors conclude that marriage is an adaptable institution, and in accommodating the vast changes that have occurred in society over the recent past, it has become a less cohesive, yet less confining arrangement.

It's 1970. Doc and Cyrano are combat medics stationed at Dong Ha combat base in Vietnam. When they decide to spend their rest and relaxation time trying to score big for their retirement and maybe learn something about the war, they hook up with a couple of wily green berets with their own plans, the sorts of plans that require combat medics. Throw in a VC soldier and some local girls, and things get wild. Ride with the team while they explore the Yellow Brick Road in the daytime, the Plain of Jars after sunset, Khe Sanh in the morning, all with the ever-present urgency and fog of war. Never slow, never restful, never relaxing. Welcome to Doc and Cyrano's R&R.

"Restraining Equality" addresses the contemporary financial, social, legal, and policy pressures currently experienced by human rights commissions across Canada. Through a combination of public policy analysis, historical research, and legal analysis, R.Brian Howe and David Johnson trace the evolution of human rights policy within this country and explore the stresses placed on human rights commissions resulting from greater fiscal restraints and society's rising expectations for equality rights over the past two decades. The authors analyse sources of these tensions in relation to the delivery of equality rights in both federal and provincial jurisdictions since the Second World War. Through a series of interviews with human rights commission officials and a survey of advocacy groups, business organizations, and human rights staff the authors explore the performance and the internal workings of these. Howe and Johnson also analyse human rights commissions in light of the theoretical literature and empirical data, and discuss the political and legal contexts in which the commissions operate, and the reform measures that have been implemented.

Over the last two decades, there has been increased interest in the distribution of crime and other antisocial behavior at lower levels of geography. The focus on micro geography and its contribution to the understanding and prevention of crime has been called the 'criminology of place'. It pushes scholars to examine small geographic areas within cities, often as small as addresses or street segments, for their contribution to crime. Here, the authors describe what is known about crime and place, providing the most up-to-date and comprehensive review available. Place Matters shows that the study of criminology of place should be a central focus of criminology in the twenty-first century. It creates a tremendous opportunity for advancing our understanding of crime, and for addressing it. The book brings together eighteen top scholars in criminology and place to provide comprehensive research expanding across different themes.

Religious Institutions and Minor Parties in the United States

Religious Institutions and Minor Parties in the United States

Gilbert et al. examine the impact of churches and church membership patterns on third parties and independent candidates in 20th-century U.S. politics. Candidates who choose not to run for office under the rubric of a major party face a well-known set of obstacles, yet the absence of discussion about the interconnections between religious institutions and minor parties is striking. The book presents a theoretical framework for understanding how religious institutions create, support, and sustain the political culture of local communities; by playing this role religious institutions support major parties and impede the electoral chances of political outsiders. The book's central finding is that third candidates are not privy to the ties that bind Democratic and Republican voters to their parties; one of the factors that creates and strengthens such ties is religion. Therefore, third candidates do best where church and party loyalties are weakest, or where third candidates have existing bases of support. The rare third candidate or minor party that possesses a base of support centered around a denomination or religious group can overcome such barriers. These conclusions are supported by analysis of census data, election returns, and voter surveys spanning the 20th century. Special attention is given to the 1992 and 1996 presidential candidacies of H. Ross Perot. This is an important analysis for scholars and other researchers dealing with American third parties and independent candidates and the impact of religion on politics.

Available in paperback for the first time, this work of original scholarship is the first to trace in full detail how the UK’s system for defining parliamentary constituencies has evolved since the Great Reform Act of 1832 and how the eight redistrictings since then were undertaken.Particular attention is paid to the five redistrictings that have been undertaken by the independent Boundary Commissions established in 1944, with a detailed study of all aspects of their work on the most recent review of all constituencies. The book is both a standard reference work on redistribution in the UK and provides the only detailed insight into how that task is currently undertaken, based on a study of the relevant documents and interviews with over a hundred of those most closely involved. The book will be essential for all those interested in the British constitution, and administrators concerned with making the constitution successful, as well as politicians.

Kelly Becomes a Superhero is a graphic novel designed for young adults 18 - 25 years old with Asperger's Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Anxiety, or Attention Deficit Disorder. The book tells four stories about a girl named Kelly Washington who faces stressful or confusing situations at home, school, and at her job. Kelly gains "superhero" powers in dealing with her dilemmas when she learns to use a set of tools that help her make sense of confusing situations and also help her better understand why other people act the way they do and how she can get along better with them. After each story, there is a "Think About It" section that gives the reader the opportunity to apply these "superhero" tools to his or her own life to stay calm when worried or confused and to figure out the best thing to do in difficult situations. Many young adults have said they don't understand what other people (like their parents, teachers, friends, neighbors, teammates, or coaches) expect them to do or why they expect it. When these young adults learn to use the "superhero" tools, they say it becomes easier to get along with others and they enjoy themselves in new ways.

Over recent years there has been a vast expansion in the variety of imaging techniques available, and developments in machine specifications continue apace. If radiologists and radiographers are to obtain optimal image quality while minimising exposure times, a good understanding of the fundamentals of the radiological science underpinning diagnostic imaging is essential. The second edition of this well-received textbook continues to cover all technical aspects of diagnostic radiology, and remains an ideal companion during examination preparation and beyond. The content includes a review of basic science aspects of imaging, followed by a detailed explanation of radiological sciences, conventional x-ray image formation and other imaging techniques. The enormous technical advances in computed tomography, including multislice acquisition and 3D image reconstruction, digital imaging in the form of image plate and direct radiography, magnetic resonance imaging, colour flow imaging in ultrasound and positron radiopharmaceuticals in nuclear medicine, are all considered here. A chapter devoted to computers in radiology considers advances in radiology information systems and computer applications in image storage and communication systems. The text concludes with a series of general topics relating to diagnostic imaging. The content has been revised and updated throughout to ensure it remains in line with the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) examination, while European and American perspectives on technology, guidelines and regulations ensure international relevance.
Managerial Communication: Evaluating the Right Dose

Managerial Communication: Evaluating the Right Dose

The metaphor of dosage offers us a rich organizing principle for managers. It focuses our efforts on such fundamental, pragmatic communication issues as: amount, frequency, delivery system, sequencing, interaction with what other agents, and contraindications. It suggests compelling new answers to fundamental problems that all managers must face, with an appreciation of basic issues beyond our conscious awareness. In our day-to-day lives - whether we are discussing things with our housing contractor, our cable repair man, with our doctor - we must constantly decide how much communication we should engage in to pursue our projects. This work focuses on the dosage metaphor as a way of confronting this question - what level of communication, both in terms of amount and of depth, is really necessary to accomplish particular purposes? Most communication theories implicitly paint a picture of the prevalence and paramount importance of communication, with a 'communication metamyth' that more is necessarily better. This book provides the first truly comprehensive treatment of dosage. It also focuses on perhaps the most contemporaneously interesting issues of change and of productivity. While fundamental to any practitioner of communication, in modern communication theory these issues receive only cursory attention. In the final chapter I analyze the dosage metaphor in broad sweep and suggest a countervailing minimalist approach to communication before turning to broader practice issues raised by application of the metaphor of dosage.
