Inheriting Abraham

Inheriting Abraham

Jon D. Levenson

Jews, Christians, and Muslims supposedly share a common religious heritage in the patriarch Abraham, and the idea that he should serve only as a source of unity among the three traditions has become widespread in both scholarly and popular circles. But in Inheriting Abraham, Jon Levenson reveals how the increasingly conventional notion of the three equally "Abrahamic" religions derives from a dangerous misunderstanding of key biblical and Qur'anic texts, fails to do full justice to any of the traditions, and is often biased against Judaism in subtle and pernicious ways.

The Love of God

The Love of God

Jon D. Levenson

The love of God is perhaps the most essential element in Judaism--but also one of the most confounding. In biblical and rabbinic literature, the obligation to love God appears as a formal commandment. Yet most people today think of love as a feeling. How can an emotion be commanded? How could one ever fulfill such a requirement? The Love of God places these scholarly and existential questions in a new light. Jon Levenson traces the origins of the concept to the ancient institution of covenant, showing how covenantal love is a matter neither of sentiment nor of dry legalism. The love of God is instead a deeply personal two-way relationship that finds expression in God's mysterious love for the people of Israel, who in turn observe God's laws out of profound gratitude for his acts of deliverance. Levenson explores how this bond has survived episodes in which God's love appears to be painfully absent--as in the brutal persecutions of Talmudic times--and describes the intensely erotic portrayals of the relationship by biblical prophets and rabbinic interpreters of the Song of Songs. He examines the love of God as a spiritual discipline in the Middle Ages as well as efforts by two influential modern Jewish thinkers--Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig--to recover this vital but endangered aspect of their tradition. A breathtaking work of scholarship and spirituality alike that is certain to provoke debate, The Love of God develops fascinating insights into the foundations of religious life in the classical Jewish tradition.

A compelling interpretation of a foundational concept of Jewish religious lifeThe love of God is arguably the most essential element in Judaism—but also one of the most confounding. Jon Levenson traces the origins of the concept to the ancient institution of covenant, showing how covenantal love is a matter neither of sentiment nor of dry legalism. From epigraphical, archaeological, and literary evidence Jon D. Mikalson has here assembled all relevant data concerning the dates of Athenian festivals, religious ceremonies, and legislative assemblies. This information has been used to revise and update our knowledge of the calendar as it reflects Athenian life. The facts and conclusions that emerge from the author's analysis correct some earlier assumptions. He brings to light new information concerning the meeting days of the Athenian Assembly and the Council, and establishes the days of the monthly festivals. Annual festivals are either dated exactly or fixed within closer time limits. The result of the author's rigorous approach is a collection of reliable evidence as to what religious and secular activities occurred on specific days of the Athenian year. Originally published in 1976. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

What if the meek really did inherit the earth? "A fantastic story about the rights of a Native American tribe upon finding an extra-terrestrial element on their land, and how they went about defending those rights. A first-class legal story that was a brilliant and interesting read." "I really liked this book. It was thought provoking and a very powerful read. The story included science, technology, adventure and drama and was lyrical in its simplicity but it packed a big punch. The characters were spiritual and very genuine and made you wish that you new them, that they could be members of your own family. The message in this book was an important one and I wish everyone one would read this book I will be recommending it to many." "It's not often that one can find a story that engages the senses and refreshes the mind with originality and attention to detail. Part science -fiction, part historical, and part spiritual, author Jon D. Anthony takes us on a journey of hope intermingled with the sacred beliefs and customs of the Chippewa people. Well-crafted and enjoyable, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a change from cookie cutter plots and worn out themes." "All Indigenous Peoples have the right of self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social, and cultural development. flag"
Abraham Lincoln's Statesmanship and the Limits of Liberal Democracy

Abraham Lincoln's Statesmanship and the Limits of Liberal Democracy

Jon D. Schaff

Southern Illinois University Press
2019
sidottu
This bold, groundbreaking study of American political development assesses the presidency of Abraham Lincoln through the lenses of governmental power, economic policy, expansion of executive power, and natural rights to show how Lincoln not only believed in the limitations of presidential power but also dedicated his presidency to restraining the scope and range of it.Though Lincoln’s presidency is inextricably linked to the Civil War, and he is best known for his defense of the Union and executive wartime leadership, Lincoln believed that Congress should be at the helm of public policy making. Likewise, Lincoln may have embraced limited government in vague terms, but he strongly supported effective rule of law and distribution of income and wealth. Placing the Lincoln presidency within a deeper and more meaningful historical context, Abraham Lincoln’s Statesmanship and the Limits of Liberal Democracy highlights Lincoln’s significance in the development of American power institutions and social movement politics.Using Lincoln’s prepresidential and presidential words and actions, this book argues that decent government demands a balance of competing goods and the strong statesmanship that Lincoln exemplified. Instead of relying too heavily on the will of the people and institutional solutions to help prevent tyranny, historian Jon D. Schaff proposes that American democracy would be better served by a moderate and prudential statesmanship such as Lincoln’s, which would help limit democratic excesses.Schaff explains how Lincoln’s views on prudence, moderation, natural rights, and economics contain the notion of limits, then views Lincoln’s political and presidential leadership through the same lens. He compares Lincoln’s views on governmental powers with the defense of unlimited government by twentieth-century progressives and shows how Lincoln’s theory of labor anticipated twentieth-century distributist economic thought. Schaff’s unique exploration falls squarely between historians who consider Lincoln a protoprogressive and those who say his presidency was a harbinger of industrialized, corporatized America. In analyzing Lincoln’s approach, Abraham Lincoln’s Statesmanship and the Limits of Liberal Democracy rejects the idea he was a revolutionary statesman and instead lifts up Lincoln’s own affinity for limited presidential power, making the case for a modest approach to presidential power today based on this understanding of Lincoln’s statesmanship. As a counterpoint to the contemporary landscape of bitter, uncivil politics, Schaff points to Lincoln’s statesmanship as a model for better ways of engaging in politics in a democracy.

An Epidemic of Rumors

An Epidemic of Rumors

Jon D. Lee

Utah State University Press
2014

Jon D Lee examines the human response to epidemics through the lens of the 2003 SARS epidemic. Societies usually respond to the eruption of disease by constructing stories, jokes, conspiracy theories, legends, and rumours, but these narratives are often more damaging than the diseases they reference. The information disseminated through them is often inaccurate, incorporating xenophobic explanations of the diseases origins and questionable medical information about potential cures and treatment. Folklore studies brings important and useful perspectives to understanding cultural responses to the outbreak of disease. Through this etiological study Lee shows the similarities between the narratives of the SARS outbreak and the narratives of other contemporary disease outbreaks like AIDS and the H1N1 virus. His analysis suggests that these disease narratives do not spring up with new outbreaks or diseases but are in continuous circulation and are recycled opportunistically.Lee also explores whether this predictability of vernacular disease narratives presents the opportunity to create counter-narratives released systematically from the government or medical science to stymie the negative effects of the fearful rumours that so often inflame humanity. With potential for practical application to public health and health policy, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of health, medicine, and folklore.
Privacy in the Workplace

Privacy in the Workplace

Jon D. Bible; Darien McWhirter

Just a few years ago, the concept of job-related privacy was barely recognized by the law and virtually unknown to most employers. Under the legal doctrine of employment-at-will, the conditions of most employment were dictated by employers, and workers held their jobs at the discretion of their superiors. In the past two decades, however, numerous laws and court rulings have established the doctrine of workplace privacy: the protection of employees and job applicants from attempts by employers to learn information about them and to regulate their activities on and off the job. This book examines the multi-faceted concept of workplace privacy, helping employers and workers to appreciate each other's legal rights, and offering practical suggestions for avoiding legal pitfalls.A number of general privacy-related issues are addressed in the volume, including how to balance employee privacy interests with business needs, what adjustments should be made in regard to illicit drugs and drug testing, and the role of computers in monitoring employees. In language stripped of as much legal jargon as possible, Jon Bible and Darien McWhirter discuss some basic aspects of our legal system and consider why employee screening attracts so much attention today. They review factors that impinge on an employer's right to screen and trace the evolution of the privacy concept from its 1890 recognition as a legal article to its current applications in the field of employment law. Finally, they explore the privacy implications of specific employment screening devices, such as AIDS, drug, and polygraph testing, as well as on-the-job surveillance and lifestyle activity interference. Extensive references are supplied at the end of each chapter, and an appendix containing the entire text of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 is also included. This study of an important legal issue will be a valuable reference source for the personnel and human resource professionals in most businesses, as well as for any employees who wish to further understand this complicated subject. Students of business and employee relations will also find it to be an important resource, as will both academic and public libraries.

The United States Supreme Court is on the verge of overturning Roe v. Wade. When it does, that decision may be as important as the Dred Scott decision a century and a half ago. During the confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas the focus was on the constitutional right to privacy and abortion. No legal concept has been more controversial and has had such a significant impact on the lives of millions of Americans. This book provides an understandable overview of the Supreme Court decisions concerned with privacy issues such as sex, drugs, abortion, and the right to die. The legal evolution of the constitutional right to privacy is explored with every significant Supreme Court decision explained along the way. This book begins with an overview of the legal history that has led to the development of a constitutional right to privacy. The relationship between morality and law are presented from the Hittites to the Puritans. The impact of the ideas of philosophers such as Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau, and Mill are presented along with an overview of the concepts of Natural Law and Natural Rights. The development of the right to privacy in American Common law is presented. The important Supreme Court decisions on privacy are discussed in detail from Griswold to Roe v. Wade.

The handsome man holding a bouquet asks your name. When you confirm you're the one the flowers are for, he pulls out his pistol and silencer and puts a bullet in the center of your forehead. Unexpectedly, Valentine is thrown into one action scene after another; a Los Angeles shootout, a quick-action helicopter and missile attack to eliminate the head of the Vietnamese underworld, and thwarting two terrorist bio-gas attacks on American soil. As the Delivery Man reveals the deeply impassioned motives behind his murderous spree, you're suddenly cheering him on and looking forward to seeing him track down his next victim. Yes, it's true. There's nothing in this book pertaining to the Mafia, zombies, Mafia-zombies or a vigilante blowing someone away...which may very well cause you to ask, "What happened?"Well, the truth is...As Long As I Have Lips is another slice in the evolution of my writing. Many authors find a genre and stick with it, but I didn't want to be labeled as a "Mob writer" simply because my first book was a memoir of my family and the New Jersey guys we grew up around. This romantic-comedy is for those who've enjoyed the rides I've taken them on with The Boss Always Sits In The Back, Deadfellas and The Delivery Man, and who'd like to read something other than the darker side of life. I always wanted to write a story based on a conversation I had with a friend...in addition to wanting to write about older women and the younger men in their lives. And now I have. It's been a slice

Kanbun Uechi lives during a turbulent era in East Asian history from the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries, a time in which the Edo Period of Japan, the Sho Kingdom of Ryukyu (Okinawa), and the Ming Dynasty of China, all representing multi-century feudal regimes, come to consecutive and precipitous ends. Like his countrymen in the geographically strategic Ryukyu Islands, Kanbun is thrown about like a leaf upon an ocean of geo-politics, great power struggles, wars, capricious and unstable governments, economic insecurity, and personal danger. Kanbun is the story of one of the three main proponents of karate to bridge the transition from mainland China to Okinawa to Japan and to the rest of the world. His personal growth parallels his training from Ryukyu kobujutsu to Chinese wushu to Okinawan karate.

Dr. Bernard Jensen lectured throughout the U.S. and around the world about health and nutrition. Early on he would tape record his lectures and then later have them typed up into booklets. He would staple them together and sell them through mail order or at his lectures. There are 21 lecture reprint booklets. The information is as timely today as it was when he started teaching about right living in the early 1940's. I have edited, revised and added to the booklets, but left the flavor of that time period and his distinct voice comes through as the content reflects his speaking more than writing style. Writers tend to stay away from writing like they are speaking when writing a book, but Dr. Bernard Jensen was adamant about his self-published books sounding like he was right there with you while you were reading his work. Lecture Reprint Booklet Number Six cover cooking techniques and recipes for building a healthy body. The following are quotes from the book: "It is my sincere belief that we cannot be well and live a normal happy life unless we work to attain this happiness through three mediums: mental, spiritual and physical. I do not think that a person, even though he may have a healthy body, can be really happy and live a successful life if he is sick in mind from worry.""A wife may be responsible for cooking for her husband right onto an operating table, or even to the undertaker. Here is something to think about She may also be responsible for the stiff joints of her family.
