A collection of short stories written by new American author Dave Lee Jones. The stories selected for this compendium survey David's range of literary skill. The reader rides a bumpy road of scenery from science fiction to period pieces to modern horror. Each work is a product of an extremely creative mind. His mind seems to compete with itself to formulate unexpected events and plot twists making finishing each story in one sitting compulsory. David has a knack for how conversations evolve and how word choice allows glimpses into the characters thoughts and true nature. Insightful dialog adds a depth to great story telling and is an earmark of great writing. David also uses conversational tones to manage the pace of each story further crafting the readers experience and luring them to the stories usually violent end. Each page of the work of this young new writer is a stab, if you will, at a very bright future. Dr. Daniel Norris, IT Professor, University of South Carolina

There are many paths in life we all travel. Some lead us into the light, but others lead us down an ever-dimming pathway into darkness. Take a walk with me, if you dare, down a winding trail in the woods - and perhaps we might stray off the track along the way. In Off the Beaten Path, you'll join a couple on their hike and soon find that one of them is hiding a terrible truth-and is willing to go to horrific lengths to keep it that way. In Stranded, you will cross paths with a man who can't quite rid himself of an itch he has developed. Frostbite allows you access into a strip club at the edge of the woods, where two patrons find out first-hand one stripper's deep, dark secret. In Ten-Penny Nailed, you'll wander deep into the forest, where one high school student has devised a plan to stand up to the school bully. Walk along the desolate sands of a moonlit beach in The Scuttling with two teens who have been warned that the beautiful setting hides a deadly danger. In Rage, a minor traffic violation sends one man down darker highways than he could ever have imagined. And Dead Bait drops you into open water with two fishermen who aim to catch that legendary 'big one' by any means necessary-even if they die trying. Let us wander into the darkening forest together and see what secrets lurk just off the beaten path...

The Hopewell Sanatorium has plenty of history for a group of local actors to explore on their night off the stage. Once a nationally recognized tuberculosis hospital and then an asylum for the mentally unstable, Old Hopewell has long been a source of urban legends, and its spooky, abandoned hallways are perfect for the theatre group to get some Halloween thrills. But what the seven friends don't know is that they've just encroached on someone else's territory. And he is ready for some Halloween fun of his own...

Is China's rise a threat to international order? Fractured China shows that it depends on what one means by 'China', for China is not the monolithic, unitary actor that many assume. Forty years of state transformation – the fragmentation, decentralisation and internationalisation of party-state apparatuses – have profoundly changed how its foreign policy is made and implemented. Today, Chinese behaviour abroad is often not the product of a coherent grand strategy, but results from a sometimes-chaotic struggle for power and resources among contending politico-business interests, within a surprisingly permissive Chinese-style regulatory state. Presenting a path-breaking new analytical framework, Fractured China transforms the central debate in International Relations and provides new tools for scholars and policymakers seeking to understand and respond to twenty-first century rising powers. Drawing on extensive fieldwork in China and Southeast Asia, it includes three major case studies – the South China Sea, non-traditional security cooperation, and development financing–to demonstrate the framework's explanatory power.

'Non-traditional' security problems like pandemic diseases, climate change and terrorism now pervade the global agenda. Many argue that sovereign state-based governance is no longer adequate, demanding and constructing new approaches to manage border-spanning threats. Drawing on critical literature in political science, political geography and political economy, this is the first book that systematically explains the outcomes of these efforts. It shows that transboundary security challenges are primarily governed not through supranational organisations, but by transforming state apparatuses and integrating them into multilevel, regional or global regulatory governance networks. The socio-political contestation shaping this process determines the form, content and operation of transnational security governance regimes. Using three in-depth case studies - environmental degradation, pandemic disease, and transnational crime - this innovative book integrates global governance and international security studies, and identifies the political and normative implications of non-traditional security governance, providing insights for scholars and policymakers alike.
