African Americans from Pittsburgh have a long and distinctive history of contributions to the cultural, political, and social evolution of the United States. From jazz legend Earl Fatha Hines to playwright August Wilson, from labor protests in the 1950s to the Black Power movement of the late 1960s, Pittsburgh has been a force for change in American race and class relations.Race and Renaissance presents the first history of African American life in Pittsburgh after World War II. It examines the origins and significance of the second Great Migration, the persistence of Jim Crow into the postwar years, the second ghetto, the contemporary urban crisis, the civil rights and Black Power movements, and the Million Man and Million Woman marches, among other topics. In recreating this period, Trotter and Day draw not only from newspaper articles and other primary and secondary sources, but also from oral histories. These include interviews with African Americans who lived in Pittsburgh during the postwar era, uncovering firsthand accounts of what life was truly like during this transformative epoch in urban history. In these ways, Race and Renaissance illuminates how African Americans arrived at their present moment in history. It also links movements for change to larger global issues: civil rights with the Vietnam War; affirmative action with the movement against South African apartheid. As such, the study draws on both sociology and urban studies to deepen our understanding of the lives of urban blacks.

A century ago, a Philadelphia philanthropist sponsored a series of journeys to the American West to document Native American cultures and traditions. The Wanamaker Expeditions, conducted between 1908 and 1913, visited Crow Agency, Montana, near the site of the Battle of Little Bighorn. In words and images, the expeditions recorded aspects of the tribal lifestyle that were rapidly disappearing as Native Americans were pressured to assimilate into mainstream society. This book offers fascinating glimpses of life during that transitional period among the Crow, Blackfeet, Cheyenne, Dakota, and other tribes of the northern plains. The Wanamaker Expeditions organized a gathering of Native American chiefs from across the country for an event known as The Last Great Indian Council. This volume offers a fascinating record of speeches from the occasion along with the participants' renditions of folkloric tales and their firsthand accounts of Custer's Last Stand. Best of all, 80 historic photographs by Dr. Joseph K. Dixon offer a stunning gallery of scenes from Native American life, including reenactments of ceremonies and portraits of leaders in traditional regalia.

Joseph Pomeroy Widney offers a history of the Aryan race, which when this book was published in 1907 was thought a branch of the Indo-European and Caucasian peoples. The author practiced as a medical doctor, having first gained experience during service in the U.S. Civil War. Over many years he became interested in the ancestry and development of humanity, carrying out research from the existing knowledge of his time. Widney developed a theory that successive generations of individual races developed distinguishing characteristics due to the qualities of the soil in which their food was cultivated, and the climate in which they resided. Much categorization ensues, with the author assigning Aryan groups and subgroups to various regions of the world. In the modern day, Widney's investigations have been proven incorrect. The advent of genetic science disproved the entire hypothesis of an Aryan race, with human lineage shown to have progressed in a completely different fashion. Nevertheless, this book is an illustrative historic example of how human ancestry and racial development were studied and discussed prior to rigorous scientific experiment and the resulting conclusive evidence and data.
