In this fourth of the New Orleans Mystery novels, Rat Trapp, a NOPD homicide detective, is summoned to Hollywood by his old flame Camille Bynum, only to witness her shocking death by electrocution. Is it a tragic accident or the latest of a series of murders being investigated by the Secret Service assigned to protect former President Reagan? To determine this, Rat has to go back to the days of Hollywood blacklisting to look for motive. "The white zone," a no-parking area at the Los Angeles airport, takes on a whole new meaning for a black detective in a very white town.

A controversial, painfully intimate depiction of race in America by the esteemed author of ‘We were the Mulvaneys’, ‘Blonde’ and ‘The Falls’. Fifteen years after the mysterious death of Minette Swift – a 19-year-old black girl enrolled as a scholarship student in an exclusive liberal arts college – her former roommate Genna begins an unofficial enquiry into the traumatic event. In reconstructing the girls' tumultuous freshman year at the college, Genna is led also to reconstruct her life as the daughter of a famous ‘radical-hippie-lawyer’ of the 1960s among whose clients were anti-Vietnam war protesters wanted by the FBI. What follows is a gripping and personal portrayal of 'black' and 'white' in America in the years of crisis following the end of the Vietnam War, and the ignominious exposure and fall of President Richard Nixon.

"A mesmerizing storyteller who seems almost unnaturally able to enter the tormented inner lives of her characters." -Denver Post Black Dahlia & White Rose is a brilliant collection of short fiction from National Book Award winner and New York Times bestselling author Joyce Carol Oates, one of the most acclaimed writers of our time. These stores, at once lyrical and unsettling, shine with the author's trademark fascination with finding the unpredictable amidst the prosaic-from her imaginative recreation of friendship between two tragically doomed young women (Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Short), to the tale of an infidelity as deeply human as it is otherworldly. Black Dahlia & White Rose is a major offering from one of the most important artists in contemporary American literature; a superb collection that showcases Joyce Carol Oates's ferocious energy and darkly imaginative storytelling power.

A new collection of critical and personal essays on writing, obsession, and inspiration from National Book Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Joyce Carol Oates. "Why do we write?" With this question, Joyce Carol Oates begins an imaginative exploration of the writing life, and all its attendant anxieties, joys, and futilities, in this collection of seminal essays and criticism. Leading her quest is a desire to understand the source of the writer's inspiration-do subjects haunt those that might bring them back to life until the writer submits? Or does something "happen" to us, a sudden ignition of a burning flame? Can the appearance of a muse-like Other bring about a writer's best work? In Soul at the White Heat, Oates deploys her keenest critical faculties, conjuring contemporary and past voices whose work she deftly and creatively dissects for clues to these elusive questions. Virginia Woolf, John Updike, Emily Dickinson, Henry James, J. M. Coetzee, Margaret Atwood, Joan Didion, Zadie Smith, and many others appear as predecessors and peers-material through which Oates sifts in acting as literary detective, philosopher, and student. The book is at its most thrilling when watching the writer herself at work, and Oates provides rare insight into her own process, in candid, self-aware dispatches from the author's own writing room. The New York Times Book Review has raved, "who better than Joyce Carol Oates ...to explicate the craft of writing?" Longtime admirers of Joyce Carol Oates's novels as well as her prose will discover much to be inspired by and obsess upon themselves in this inventive collection from an American master.

Upon This Rock: White Rock Baptist Church's Dynamic People and Their Influence in the Durham, North Carolina, Community, 1866-2016
Working from the premise that the story of White Rock Baptist Church has often been neglected in books and courses on the role and impact of major African-American institutions on Durham and the State of North Carolina, Dr. Joyce Blackwell offers this wonderfully informative and short history of the church and its impact on the local community. Upon This Rock: White Rock Baptist Church's Dynamic People and Their Influence in the Durham, North Carolina, Community, 1866-1932, tells the story of how the church, inspired through prayer and built primarily around the Word of God, was made significant through its members who interpreted their Christian faith by serving the African-American community's needs. For these and other reasons, White Rock Baptist Church became a significant arena for spiritual support, educational opportunity, economic development, political activism, and racial uplift.

This is a story about a girl named Margaret. The story is told from Margaret's point-of-view as a kindergartner. She learns a powerful lesson about the power of words. Margaret realizes that a person cannot take back what has already been said or done. Meanwhile, Margaret loses her best friend. She tries to figure out a way to go back to the way things used to be, but she finds out that this is not an option. She never could figure out a way to take back what she said. The kindergartner learned that saying I am sorry was not enough to erase the impact. At a very young age, Margaret learns about impact and why she should not repeat words that she hears, especially if she does not know the meaning of the words. The kindergartner learns how vital it is to know what the words she speaks mean. Margaret ultimately wants others to understand what she now understands.

You may have already purchased this book's predecessor, Swimming Holes of California, and visited many, if not all, of its swimming holes. This makes you a pro based on experience. Another type of pro seeks out swimming holes with cliffs for jumping, while other pros like to backpack miles into the wilderness in search of freedom and solitude. Whether you enjoy one or all of the above activities, we've designed this book to meet your needs. No matter which pro option you pursue, this book will have something for you.
