Finding the Virgin Mary

Finding the Virgin Mary

Stories about the Virgin Mary began to appear in the second century, a spring of tradition that branched off from the mainstream teaching of the canonical gospels. This developed into a torrent of texts about Mary, her relationship with God and her motherhood. This book translates and interprets such stories about Mary from the beginnings of Christianity to modern times. The narrative or story theology of these works shows her to be a partner with her son Jesus in the work of salvation. Early stories depict Mary as chosen from childhood, and she is shown at the Last Supper with other women. Medieval tales recount the miracles she works to cure both physical and moral failings, saving sinners from the devil. All but ignored after the Reformation, stories of her appearances--Our Lady of Guadalupe (Mexico), Our Lady of Lourdes (France) and Our Lady of Fatima (Portugal) have been told and retold across the centuries and throughout the world. Today, Mary is still seen as an icon of women's agency, celebrated in song, film and art of every kind. This book uncovers her history and reveals her power through the life and message of this woman of faith.

Fenella Kelly, widow, artist and guest house owner, faces eviction; her mortgage is about to expire. Her mother Marjorie wishes she would accept Charles Peake’s offer for Bayview, so that they can all move on… Especially incontinent, wheelchair bound Grandmother Norah, who should be in a care home. So why won’t Fenella agree? After all, Tom is moving to the other side of the island and Marjorie has a flat overlooking the Mooragh Park and lake. Marjorie resents spending time at Bayview, a place too steeped in memories. While Fenella remains stubbornly resistant to selling, she has in fact been questioning her humdrum life. Painting tourist scenes and catering for greedy guests is all very well, but celibacy is dreary, whilst the unexpected return of Peter Quilliam to the island has stirred dormant desires. While Fenella daydreams, Marjorie seethes, until an unexpected guest comes to stay. Nothing will be the same again.

"Living Reading" is a qualitative research study of the ways teachers form and enact notions of literacy through participation in a subject-area association that places reading at the heart of its mission. This study explores the gendered and historical roots of the discipline of reading and reading instruction in the United States, and it demonstrates how the professional development opportunities offered by this organization (and others like it) support and constrain educational reform initiatives. Through -living reading- teacher-members seek spiritual affirmation and renewal as well as professional knowledge. This is the first in-depth look inside the practice of a subject-area association, one of a select number of professional groups that wield broad influence on teachers' practice and educational policy."

Phantasy in Childhood

Phantasy in Childhood

First published in 1952, Phantasy in Childhood is for a psycho-analytically oriented public. The authors have set out to express in non-technical language some of the theories we owe to the work of Melanie Klein, and to show how they are repeatedly borne out in the day-to-day behaviour of children. Numerous practical examples are given, drawn from experience of children under many different conditions. In some cases the authors merely suggest interpretations which seem likely, but would need psychoanalytic confirmation; in others the meaning is unmistakable from the material available; in all, the aim has been to point to the presence and nature of unconscious phantasy, and to its expression in behaviour. Although written in simple language, the book is not easy, as, to those who are unfamiliar with it, the concept of unconscious phantasy is in itself difficult. The attempt has been made, however, to give living pictures of the children, and, while definitely not advocating the wild application of a psycho-analytic technique, to show how some understanding of the importance of phantasy can be of value to those caring for children. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1952. The language used is a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.

A Handbook of the Troubadours

A Handbook of the Troubadours

F. R. P. Akehurst; Judith M. Davis

University of California Press
1995
pokkari
This book is a reference volume and a digest of more than a century of scholarly work on troubadour poetry. Written by leading scholars, it summarizes the current consensus on the various facets of troubadour studies. Standing at the beginning of the history of modern European verse, the troubadours were the prime poets and composers of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries in the South of France. No study of medieval literature is complete without an examination of the courtly love which is celebrated in the elaborately rhymed stanzas of troubadour verse, creations whose words and melodies were imitated by poets and musicians all over medieval Europe. The words of about 2,500 troubadour songs have survived, along with 250 melodies, and all have come under intense scholarly scrutiny. This Handbook brings together the fruits of this scrutiny, giving teachers and students an overview of the fundamental issues in troubadour scholarship. All quotations are given in the original Old Occitan and in English. The editors provide a list of troubadour editions and an index, and each chapter includes a list of additional readings.
