Judith Fryer's study of novelists Edith Wharton and Willa Cather is a rich examination of the actual and imagined spaces women inhabit, perceive, and create. Turning to the period of ""America's coming of age,"" Fryer offers a woman-centered inquiry into an era whose traditional landmarks are the frontier, the rise of the city, and World War I.Fryer draws her analysis from history, philosophy, environmental psychology, anthropology, sociology, and geography as well as from literature, architechure, and painting. The book's conceptual bonds are women's structures of the period: the Woman's Building at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 and the 1915 feminist utopian community, Herland, imagined by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.Focusing on the experience of women, Fryer presents a series of meditations that are concerned with the structures of fantasy -- a plan for a house, a room, a set of furnishings, a landscape, a story. Offering new readings of the fictions of Edith Wharton and Willa Cather that depart from existing biographical or psychological analyses, Fryer provides an original view of the meaning of space for such educated women.Wharton and Cather departed from the customary ""American"" expressions of the dominant culture, Fryer argues, to explore and inscribe their own experiences. She focuses on their imaginative structures, from Wharton's meticulously conceived interiors, which include all that the eye can encompass, to Cather's unfurnished rooms and landscapes, which are her physical and spiritual correlatives. In demonstrating the relationship between the spaces women inhabit and the language of their imaginative creations, Fryer brings new meaning to the ongoing investigations of creativity versus environment.A UNC Press Enduring Edition -- UNC Press Enduring Editions use the latest in digital technology to make available again books from our distinguished backlist that were previously out of print. This fourth edition of Art Song in the United States, 1759–2011 covers songs for solo voice and piano by American composers from the mid-18th through the early 21st centuries. The book is structured as an annotated bibliography with approximately 2,850 numbered entries listed alphabetically by composer and title and indexed in various ways to help teachers and singers locate the particular song they require for practice or performance. This edition adds eleven years’ worth of new works, anthologies, and collections (about 450 new entries), reflecting the relatively recent outpouring of song compositions by American composers and a wealth of new song anthologies and collections. This bibliography features information on each song or song cycle or set. Users will find critical data on the poet, publisher and copyright date, key, vocal range, vocal tessitura, meter(s), tempo, length, difficulty of vocal line and piano score, most suitable voice type, mood and subject of the text, and brief description of the vocal line and piano score. It also includes commentary on special difficulties for performers and possible uses of the song in programming. In addition, individual titles of composite works are given, and those that appear in collections are indexed to the list of collections in the front matter. Composer, poet, special characteristics/subject, and title indexes—and even discographic lists recordings where available—all aid researchers in finding songs. The primary audiences for this bibliography are voice teachers and singers in search of appropriate art songs for their students or themselves, as well as libraries with collecting interests in music and American literature.
This work offers insights into how specific films influenced the Americanization of the Holocaust and how the medium per se helped seed that event into the public consciousness. In addition to an in-depth study on films produced for both theatrical release and TV since 1937 - including ""The Great Dictator"", ""Cabaret"", ""Julia"", and the mini-series Holocaust - this work provides an analysis of ""Schindler's List"" and the debate over the merit of Spielberg's vision of the Holocaust. It also examines more thoroughly made-for-television movies, such as ""Escape From Sobibor"", ""Playing For Time"", and ""War and Remembrance"". A special chapter on ""The Diary of Anne Frank"" discusses the evolution of that singularly European work into a universal symbol. Paying special attention to the tumultuous 1960s in America, it assesses the effect of the era on Holocaust films made during that time. It also discusses how these films helped integrate the Holocaust into the fabric of American society, transforming it into a metaphor for modern suffering. Finally, the work explores cinema in relation to the Americanization of the Jewish image.

This book is the first comparative study of the ways in which the Holocaust has been memorialized in Australia, Britain and New Zealand. It examines: The processes by which the Holocaust entered Jewish and mainstream cultures. Representations of the uniquesness and/or universality of the Holocaust. Uses and abuses of the terminology and imagery of the Holocaust. The relationship between Holocaust remembrance and Jewish unity and identity. Interpretations of the lessons of the Holocaust. Despite the different national histories of Australia, Britain, and New Zealand, and notwithstanding variations in Jewish community size and composition, the Holocaust has been memorialized in remarkably similar ways, although in many respects these are significantly different from the American experience.

The main goal of this research is the study of the strategies of provisioning and utilization of lithic raw materials within the Pali Aike volcanic field, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina (South America). The work includes an analysis of the land-use patterns and home ranges of the human populations that inhabited this region during the Late Holocene (ca. last 4000 years BP). The case-study presented here employs a methodology of lithic analysis that is regional and non-typological, which has the potential to be of value in other areas of the world and with other specific research goals. "Far from a dictionary, the concepts are portrayed as complex, and conflicting definitions and usages are both noted and evaluated... Each article includes a (necessarily selective) set of references, and cross-references to other concepts included in the book... Moreover, the coverage and evaluation of the concepts is right at the current leading edge in a rapidly moving field." - Victor Marshall, Department of Sociology and Institute on Aging, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill "The concepts are very clear and very relevant, and fantastic for my group of undergraduate students... I found each concept to be succinctly and simply captured, holding enough information to satisfy initial cravings and complex enough to tempt further reading... I had originally thought that this book would provide supplementary reading as part of my 'Healthy Ageing' course, but have changed my mind to essential reading now I have had the opportunity to read the entire book." - Dr Meredith Tavener, Groningen University Social gerontology is a new and dynamic field reflecting the increasing interest in ageing across the world. This book provides a readily accessible guide to well established and contested issues, as well as new concepts emerging through cutting edge research in the discipline. The entries give concise, lucid knowledge on what constitutes the 'building blocks' of social gerontology and sets out a clear review of the core concepts, both classic and emerging, in this subject area. Each concept is explored in terms of its history, application, usefulness to theory and research, and significance in practice. They go beyond simple definitions of the concepts to look at how each issue has shaped the discipline of social gerontology today. This book is authored by social gerontologists from the UK and the USA. Together they present an interdisciplinary perspective and reflect a global approach to the presentation of key concepts in social gerontology.
