At a great assemblage of the Israelites for the worship of Moloch the priests demand the children of Manasseh for sacrifice. The king, overborne by the frenzy of the crowd, acquiesces. The priests go to the king's palace and take the children from their mother, and bring them down into the Valley of Hinnom to sacrifice them. Judith endeavours to save the children and is near being sacrificed herself by the furious worshippers, but is saved by the coming of the Assyrian host, who lay Jerusalem in ruins, and take Manasseh prisoner to Babylon.

A breathtaking novel of passion and politics, set in the hotbed of Palestine in the 1940s, by a master of twentieth-century fiction It is the eve of Britain’s withdrawal from Palestine in 1948, a moment that will mark the beginning of a new Israel. But the course of history is uncertain, and Israel’s territorial enemies plan to smother the new country at its birth. Judith Roth has escaped the concentration camps in Germany only to be plunged into the new conflict, one with stakes just as high for her as they are for her people. Initially conceived as a screenplay for the 1966 film starring Sophia Loren, Lawrence Durrell’s previously unpublished novel offers a thrilling portrayal of a place and time when ancient history crashed against the fragile bulwarks of the modernizing world. This book features an introduction by editor Richard Pine, which puts Judith in context with Durrell’s body of work and traces the fascinating development of the novel. Also included is an illustrated biography of Lawrence Durrell containing rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate and the British Library’s modern manuscripts collection.

Katherine Kinneavy is an NYPD homicide detective with a drinking problem, an Irish temper and an unflagging commitment to any case she's assigned. Wendell Roane is an ambitious reporter specializing in stories about violence against women. Joe Cataldo is an overworked Mafia underboss desperate to keep things on an even keel, lest New York's underworld regress into the wars and bloodbaths of the '30s and '70s. When a mob lieutenant and a bar owner, both with a history of unspeakable crimes against women, turn up dead on the same cold autumn morning, a vigilante group styling itself "Judith" takes credit for both killings and promises more. These three vastly different people crash into each other's orbit in search of the group, and no matter how the search ends, it may leave everything they think they know about themselves and the worlds they live in shaken to the very core.

The Book of Judith has aroused a great deal of scholarly interest in the last few decades. This volume, the first full length commentary on Judith to appear in over 25 years, includes a new translation and a detailed verse-by-verse commentary, which touches upon philological, literary, and historical questions. The extensive introduction discusses the work's date and historical background, and looks closely at the controversial question of the book's original language. Biblical influences on the book's setting, characters, plot, and language are investigated, and the heroine, Judith is viewed against the background of biblical women (and men). The influence of classical Greek writers such as Herodotus and Ctesias on the work is noted, as are the interesting differences between the Septuagint and Vulgate versions of Judith.
