In the Nevada desert, in the near future, a brilliant biologist and single mother named Naomi Chiang sets off a chain reaction that threatens to bring the networked world to its knees. When her seventeen-year-old son, Colt, who spends most of his time in the comfort of virtual reality, secretly releases her latest findings--a process for regrowing human tissue--Colt's estranged father crashes into their lives again, backed by the secretive security organization he heads. The U.S. government wants Naomi's research . . . and her son, who must leave the virtual sphere to discover the pleasures--and pains--of a life fully lived. Page-turning and thought-provoking, Connect is a whip-smart novel that explores what connection--both human and otherwise--might be in a digital age. It is a story of mothers and sons; but it is also about you, your phone, and the world to come.

Gorgeously illustrated and with a classic feel, this is a brilliantly funny story of a rabbit and a bear who discover that things are always better when they're shared with a friend. Ideal for readers moving on from picture books. 'A perfect animal double-act.' (The Times, Book of the Week)Bear wakes up early from hibernation. If she can't sleep, then at least she can make a snowman. Rabbit has never made a snowman, but he definitely wants to make one that's better than Bear's. But with an avalanche and a hungry wolf heading his way, Rabbit soon realises that it might be nice to have a friend on his side. From novelist and playwright Julian Gough, and the winner of the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, Jim Field, this is a tale of friendship, gravity, and just a little bit of poo. 'Rabbit's Bad Habits is a breath of fresh air in children's fiction, a laugh-out-loud story of rabbit and wolf and bear, of avalanches and snowmen. The sort of story that makes you want to send your children to bed early, so you can read it to them.' What happens in Rome stays in Rome-or does it?Chaos ensues when a laid-off senior executive from the U.S. who has lived and worked for years in Italy takes a temporary job chaperoning sixteen high school students and their three teachers from Atlanta in the Eternal City of Rome. The executive, Atticus Winterle, finds himself forced to use all his skill with people along with selected local resources to keep the kids and teachers on track and out of trouble-to the extent possible. Despite, or perhaps because of, the strenuous efforts he must undertake to keep things from falling apart, he finds that both the teenagers and the adults-including himself-seem to grow closer and even learn from the experiences they share in the Italian capital. In Nine Days in Rome, you will discover: The terrible toll bad parenting has taken on America's youth, and how this is reflected in the students' behavior on the trip. How romance finds a way to bloom even in the midst of the herculean job of shepherding a group of unruly teenagers.Captivating descriptions of Roman landmarks, art and architecture from an expert observerHow a trip to one of the world's most visited cities unleashes a series of crises, driven by factors common to this age group all over world such as drugs, hormones, depression, etc., that the neophyte chaperone must handle. While the events the book chronicles may seem like fare for a Las Vegas lost weekend, the takeaway from these experiences is that people, teenagers and those of middle-age alike, can learn and grow in response to challenging circumstances. Join Atticus Winterle and this surprising group from Atlanta for an exciting tour of Rome that features moments of great joy and moments of great sadness and demonstrates how surprising bonds can be formed and connections made when people from different spheres are brought together.
The Physics of Thermoelectric Energy Conversion

This book outlines the principles of thermoelectric generation and refrigeration from the discovery of the Seebeck and Peltier effects in the nineteenth century through the introduction of semiconductor thermoelements in the mid-twentieth century to the more recent development of nanostructured materials. It is shown that the efficiency of a thermoelectric generator and the coefficient of performance of a thermoelectric refrigerator can be related to a quantity known as the figure of merit. The figure of merit depends on the Seebeck coefficient and the ratio of the electrical to thermal conductivity. It is shown that expressions for these parameters can be derived from the band theory of solids. The conditions for favourable electronic properties are discussed. The methods for selecting materials with a low lattice thermal conductivity are outlined and the ways in which the scattering of phonons can be enhanced are described. The application of these principles is demonstrated for specific materials including the bismuth telluride alloys, bismuth antimony, alloys based on lead telluride, silicon-germanium and materials described as phonon-glass electron-crystals. It is shown that there can be advantages in using the less familiar transverse thermoelectric effects and the transverse thermomagnetic effects. Finally, practical aspects of thermoelectric generation and refrigeration are discussed. The book is aimed at readers who do not have a specialised knowledge of solid state physics.
