The theories of justice developed by Rawls, Sen and Nussbaum are examined in this book, which sets a goal to perform a comparative analysis of these theories and to demonstrate their mutual relationships. All three liberal theories significantly enrich the set of fundamental principles of morality that concerns the sphere of political action. The novelty of the Sen’s and Nussbaum’s capability approach in comparison with Rawls is that they discuss the problem of social justice on a global scale in their own original way. They do not try to extend and adjust the two principles of justice to the whole mankind nor they treat the difference principle as to be applied everywhere. Instead, they present their own cosmopolitan ways to apply their theories of justice to take into account issues which are neglected or insufficiently developed by Rawls, such as global inequalities, the discrimination of women, the rights of people with disabilities and animal rights. These theories can be described as answer to this crucial objection towards the Rawls’ work that this theory of justice does not solve these important global problems.

Abbreviating Middle English: Scribal practices, Visual Texts and Medieval Multimodalities investigates the changing dynamics of scribal abbreviating practices in a corpus of late Middle English manuscripts of Richard Rolle’s, John Lydgate’s and John Gower’s works and reinterprets these practices from new perspectives of visual pragmatics, medieval multimodalities and visual code-switching. Spanning the boundaries of manuscript studies, cultural semiotics and text-image approaches to pre-modern written sources, the book studies scribal abbreviations and medieval visuality and links them with modern practices of textuality by combining tools and methods of traditional disciplines employed in the study of historical texts as well as those developed for the analyses of modern discourse. Justyna Rogos-Hebda outlines the main directions in abbreviation studies, describes research methods and considers the broader developments in manuscript studies integrating aspects of materialist philology, multimodality theory, visual pragmatics and visual and code-switching into descriptive-analytical models of medieval textualities. Rogos-Hebda aims to problematize abbreviation within the socio-cultural contexts of medieval mentalities, Christian hermeneutics and Middle English multilingualism to unpack the multilayered motivations for the practices of scribal communities.

Evil is a salient component of Endo Shusaku’s writing. Questions surrounding evil haunted the writer as a student of French literature, having discovered the works of Western authors like François Mauriac and Georges Bernanos. It is around the problem of evil that Endo would create his most renowned novels and the cross-cultural dimensions of the questions he posed on the nature of evil would make him one of the most widely translated Japanese authors. This study offers new insight into the intellectual and artistic development of the author by focusing on a lesser known yet significant body of work: his essays and critical texts. The book is, on the one hand, an attempt to follow the path of thinking delineated by Endo Shusaku himself and, on the other, a methodological approach to literary studies based on the application of selected categories of Paul Ricœur’s hermeneutics. Thus, the book accentuates the problem of subjectivity and personhood in Endo’s works, ultimately exploring the question, Who is the one who asks about evil?
