This close examination of Sir Arthur Gordon's six governorships (New Brunswick, Trinidad, Mauritius, Fiji, New Zealand, and Ceylon) and his administration of the Western Pacific High Commission should help fill the need for a more accurate assessment of the role of the colonial governor in the governing process than the paucity of biographies of these governors has previously made possible. It demonstrates the revolutionary impact that an inventive and determined governor of proconsular proclivities could have upon Crown colonies, and the sense of frustration and of wasted talent which might be experienced by such a man in self-governing colonies.
The figures of Michael Robartes and Owen Aherne appear throughout the writing of the great Irish poet W.B. Yeats, featuring in his poems, short fictions, dialogues and as authorities in notes to his work. Bringing together into one volume published and unpublished writings featuring these two enigmatic figures, W.B. Yeats’s Robartes-Aherne Writings traces their history and the development of Yeats’s mystical thought that culminated (twice) in the publication of his visionary work A Vision (1925, 1937). Including reproductions of manuscript and notebook pages as well as transcriptions and extracts from a wide range of Yeats’s mystical writings and substantial commentary and annotation throughout, this book is an essential resource for scholars of Yeats’s thought, his stylistic evolution and the esoteric influences on modernist writing in the early 20th century.

Americans love to trash their politicians as corrupt and self-interested, but they don't agree on a solution. How can America attract good leaders to the thousands of elective offices in the land? In Politicians: The Worst Kind of People to Run the Government, Except for All the Others, Bruce Chapman lays out a bold plan for the changes we need to make in our public life if we are serious about enabling worthy leaders to emerge and to succeed. Drawing on history as well as his own extensive experience in politics and public policy, Chapman challenges the conventional wisdom about politicians, arguing that their chief rivals-the media, bureaucrats, college professors, and even political "reform" groups-are often sources of further political demoralization rather than renewal. Republicans and Democrats alike, conservatives and liberals, have a stake in responding to the stirring and provocative challenge raised by this book.

This book is the first to make extensive use of unpublished manuscripts to show how a period of English literature affected W.B.Yeats's development as a poet. Besides presenting a factual account of his acquaintance with English Renaissance writers based on evidence from his library and elsewhere, the study examines his response to numerous minor figures and several major ones - including Spenser, Jonson, Shakespeare, Donne and Milton.
America is more diverse than ever before, but, disturbingly, black professionals still face discrimination, bias, and hostility in the workplace. If you're black, you might be up against more than just the tough job competition. S. K. Chapman has spent years in corporate America and has many stories to share. Some of the stories shared by Chapman will make you laugh out loud, some will make you seethe with anger, but all will make you think. Chapman has experienced the entire spectrum of bias and disparate treatment in the workplace. Some of the situations Chapman describes would be humorous on their own, but the absurdities that blacks in the workplace face quickly accumulate and become overwhelming, revealing deep-seated and unsettling patterns. Black Threatening Invisible contains insights for people on every step of the career ladder. Whether you are a recent graduate encountering workplace bias and hostility for the first time or someone who has been discriminated against for years, this book has valuable insight for you.
