Sustainable Sludge Management

Sustainable Sludge Management

Stricter regulations in many countries are increasing interest in sludge management processes which promote sustainability. Engineers and scientists are looking for viable options for resource management through the creation of value added-products from wastewater sludge. The ASCE's Technical Committee on Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste Management identified the need to collect and present the latest information on recent trends in the bioconversion of sludge to value-added products like biopesticides, biosurfactants, enzymes, bioplastics, and biofertilizers/bioflocculants. The committee envisioned an easy-to-read book to serve as a reference for practicing professionals and as a textbook in undergraduate or graduate courses. "Sustainable Sludge Management: Production of Value-Added Products" offers an examination of wastewater sludge characteristics; a road to sustainability by converting sludge into value-added products; and, detailed information on the various types of value-added products being created from sludge. This book will be valuable to undergraduate and graduate students in environmental engineering, educators, researchers, practicing engineers and scientists.
Atlas

Atlas

Kai-cheung Dung

Columbia University Press
2012
sidottu
Set in the long-lost City of Victoria (a fictional world similar to Hong Kong), Atlas is written from the unified perspective of future archaeologists struggling to rebuild a thrilling metropolis. Divided into four sections-"Theory," "The City," "Streets," and "Signs"-the novel reimagines Victoria through maps and other historical documents and artifacts, mixing real-world scenarios with purely imaginary people and events while incorporating anecdotes and actual and fictional social commentary and critique. Much like the quasi-fictional adventures in map-reading and remapping explored by Paul Auster, Jorge Luis Borges, and Italo Calvino, Dung Kai-cheung's novel challenges the representation of place and history and the limits of technical and scientific media in reconstructing a history. It best exemplifies the author's versatility and experimentation, along with China's rapidly evolving literary culture, by blending fiction, nonfiction, and poetry in a story about succeeding and failing to recapture the things we lose. Playing with a variety of styles and subjects, Dung Kai-cheung inventively engages with the fate of Hong Kong since its British "handover" in 1997, which officially marked the end of colonial rule and the beginning of an uncharted future.

Dung Kai-cheung’s A Catalog of Such Stuff as Dreams Are Made On is a playful and imaginative glimpse into the consumerist dreamscape of late-nineties Hong Kong. First published in 1999, it comprises ninety-nine sketches of life just after the handover of the former British colony to China. Each of these stories in miniature begins from a piece of ephemera, usually consumer products or pop culture phenomena, and develops alternately comic and poignant snapshots of urban life.Dung’s sketches center on once-trendy items that evoke the world at the turn of the millennium, such as Hello Kitty, Final Fantasy VIII, a Windows 98 disk, a clamshell mobile phone, Air Jordans, and cargo shorts. The protagonist of each piece, typically a young woman, is struck by an odd, even overriding obsession with an object or fad. Characters embark on brief dalliances or relationships lasting no longer than the fashions that sparked them. Dung blends vivid everyday details—Portuguese egg tarts, Japanese TV shows, the Hong Kong subway—with situations that are often fantastical or preposterous. This catalog of vanished products illuminates how people use objects to define and even invent their own selves. A major work from one of Hong Kong’s most gifted and original writers, Dung’s archaeology of the end of the twentieth century speaks to perennial questions about consumerism, nostalgia, and identity.

RF and Microwave Wireless Systems

RF and Microwave Wireless Systems

Kai Chang

John Wiley Sons Inc
2000
sidottu
A comprehensive introduction to the hardware, parameters, and architectures of RF/microwave wireless systems As the basis for some of the hottest technologies of the new millennium, radio frequency (RF) and microwave wireless systems rapidly propel us toward a future in which the transmission of voice, video, and data communications will be possible anywhere in the world through the use of simple, handheld devices. This book provides scientists and engineers with clear, thorough, up-to-date explanations of all aspects of RF and microwave wireless systems, including general hardware components, system parameters, and architectures. Renowned authority Kai Chang covers both communication and radar/sensor systems and extends the discussion to other intriguing topics, from global positioning systems (GPS) to smart highways and smart automobiles. With an emphasis on basic operating principles, Dr. Chang reviews waves and transmission lines, examines modulation and demodulation and multiple-access techniques, and helps bridge the gap between RF/microwave engineering and communication system design. Ample practical examples of components and system configurations and nearly 300 illustrations and photographs complete this timely and indispensable resource.
Microwave Ring Circuits and Related Structures

Microwave Ring Circuits and Related Structures

sidottu
The second edition of Microwave Ring and Related Structures, Circuits, and Antennas incorporates the latest material on ring circuits and applications. This edition covers the following new topics: the parallel plate waveguide model, using both rectangular and circular ring configurations, and disk geometris and sprial inductors, which have wide usage in RF and microwave circuits.
Microwave Solid-State Circuits and Applications
Focuses on the basic operating principles and the techniques used to incorporate the devices into circuit applications. Part one reviews fundamental principles in transmission lines and circuits as well as semiconductor physics. Two-terminal solid-state devices, circuits and applications are covered in the second section. Part three discusses three-terminal solid-state devices, circuits and applications. Introduces noise figures and system parameters for receiver design. Includes numerous examples and problems.

Privacy-preserving computing aims to protect the personal information of users while capitalizing on the possibilities unlocked by big data. This practical introduction for students, researchers, and industry practitioners is the first cohesive and systematic presentation of the field's advances over four decades. The book shows how to use privacy-preserving computing in real-world problems in data analytics and AI, and includes applications in statistics, database queries, and machine learning. The book begins by introducing cryptographic techniques such as secret sharing, homomorphic encryption, and oblivious transfer, and then broadens its focus to more widely applicable techniques such as differential privacy, trusted execution environment, and federated learning. The book ends with privacy-preserving computing in practice in areas like finance, online advertising, and healthcare, and finally offers a vision for the future of the field.
