Based on the western song "Utah Kel", this is the story of two friends, Utah Kel Johnson and Gayle Tex Bodily. Utah and Tex, at the young age of 17, leave their homes in west Texas seeking to find work on a trail drive. They meet an old cowboy named Jake Griffith who takes them under his wing and teaches them what they need to know to herd cattle and how to survive on the prairie. Utah and Tex help Jake get his cattle to Laredo where they are hired on by Martin McMillan a longtime friend of Jakes. They begin one of the last big trail drives to Abilene, Kansas. Along the way Utah acquires an unwanted reputation of being good with a gun. Men begin to seek out Utah to test their own skill against his. Tex meanwhile begins to wonder about the universe and the world around him. His curiosity leads Tex to seek out the Mormon religion. Their adventures are a heartwarming mixture of happiness and sadness that will touch your heart. A good old fashioned western story of cattle drives, rustlers, gun fights and finding love along the way.

This book focuses on the issues of resilience and variability of desert pastoralists, explicitly challenging a set of traditional topics of the discourse around pastoralism in arid lands of the Old World. Based on a field research carried out on the Kel Tadrart Tuareg in Libya, various facets of a surprisingly successful adaptation to an extremely arid environment are investigated. By means of an ethnoarchaeological approach, explored are the Kel Tadrart interactions with natural resources, the settlement patterns, the campsite structures, and the formation of the pastoral archaeological landscape, focusing on variability and its causes. The resilience of the Kel Tadrart is the key to understand the reasons of their choice to stay and live in the almost rainless Acacus Mountains, in spite of strong pressure to sedentarize in the neighboring oases. Through the collection of the interviews, participant observation, mapping of inhabited and abandoned campsites, remote sensing, and archival sources, various and different Kel Tadrart strategies, perceptions, and material cultures are examined. This book fills an important gap in the ethnoarchaeological research in central Sahara and in the study of desert pastoralism.? Desert lands are likely to increase over the next decades but, our knowledge of human adaptations to these areas of the world is still patchy and generally biased by the idea that extremely arid lands are not suited for human occupation.?
Conflicts in the Ouillimenden Kel Dinnik Tuareg Society, Niger
The general aim of this work is to study conflict-based political relations in Ouillimenden Kel Dinnik Tuareg society in the Azawagh region of Niger, from the pre-colonial period to the present day. The Ouillimenden Kel Dinnik Tuaregs originated in the M naka region (present-day Mali) following a rift between them and their brothers in Menaka, who took the name Ouillimenden Kel Ataram. The emigrants are called Ouillimenden de l'Est or Kel Dinnik. Their history is marked by ongoing conflicts, notably between the various Touareg confederations that surround them, but also by tensions between the social fractions that make them up. This permanence of conflict depends on their traditional upbringing. This is how they fought great battles against the Kel A r, the Kel Gress, the Kel Ahaggar and the Kel Ataram. This warlike attitude of the Ouillimenden Kel Dinnik continued during the colonial period with the revolt of 1917, the various regimes that succeeded one another in Niger after independence, and during the new context of democratization with the armed rebellion from 1991 to 1995.

Among the Tuareg people in the Air Mountain region of Niger, women are sometimes possessed by spirits called 'the people of solitude'. The evening curing rituals of the possessed, featuring drumming and song, take place before an audience of young men and women, who joke and flirt as the ritual unfolds. In her analysis of this tolerated but unofficial cult, Susan Rasmussen analyses symbolism and aesthetic values, provides case studies of possessed women, and reviews what local people think about the meaning of possession.
