Heroic Diplomacy

Heroic Diplomacy

Kenneth W. Stein

Routledge
1999
sidottu
From the prelude of the October 1973 Middle East war through the signing of the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty in March 1979, Kenneth W. Stein grippingly traces American involvement in the Arab-Israeli negotiations. He provides an extraordinary range of first-hand accounts, recollections and anecdotes from over eighty bureaucrats, diplomats and military leaders who participated in Arab-Israeli peace talks in the 1970's and since. Since the official public record remains unavailable for reasons of national security, these interviews provide unequaled insight into the internal divisions, political intrigue and untold stories of the peace process. Charting the complex and often contradictory goals of Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Syria, the US and the USSR, Stein chronicles the evolution of these negotiations and analyzes the key roles of Sadat, Kissinger, Carter, and Begin. An introduction and epilogue place this period in context of Arab-Israeli history since 1948 and the current status of the peace process.

First Among Equals: The Supreme Court in American Life

First Among Equals: The Supreme Court in American Life

Kenneth W. Starr

Grand Central Publishing
2002
sidottu
Today's United States Supreme Court consists of nine intriguingly varied justices and one overwhelming contradiction: Compared to its revolutionary predecessor, the Rehnquist Court appears deceptively passive, yet it stands as dramatically ready to defy convention as the Warren Court of the 1950s and 60s. Now Kenneth W. Starr-who served as clerk for one chief justice, argued twenty-five cases as solicitor general before the Supreme Court, and is widely regarded as one of the nation's most distinguished practitioners of constitutional law-offers us an incisive and unprecedented look at the paradoxes, the power, and the people of the highest court in the land. In First Among Equals Ken Starr traces the evolution of the Supreme Court from its beginnings, examines major Court decisions of the past three decades, and uncovers the sometimes surprising continuity between the precedent-shattering Warren Court and its successors under Burger and Rehnquist. He shows us, as no other author ever has, the very human justices who shape our law, from Sandra Day O'Connor, the Court's most pivotal-and perhaps most powerful-player, to Clarence Thomas, its most original thinker. And he explores the present Court's evolution into a lawyerly tribunal dedicated to balance and consensus on the one hand, and zealous debate on hotly contested issues of social policy on the other. On race, the Court overturned affirmative action and held firm to an undeviating color-blind standard. On executive privilege, the Court rebuffed three presidents, both Republican and Democrat, who fought to increase their power at the expense of rival branches of government. On the 2000 presidential election, the Court prevented what it deemed a runaway Florida court from riding roughshod over state law-illustrating how in our system of government, the Supreme Court is truly the first among equals. Compelling and supremely readable, First Among Equals sheds new light on the most frequently misunderstood legal pillar of American life.

Socio-Religious Reform Movements in British India

Kenneth W. Jones

Cambridge University Press

pokkari
The third part of The New Cambridge History of India is devoted to the Indian Empire and the Beginnings of Modern Society. In the first volume, Kenneth Jones looks at the numerous nineteenth-century movements for social and religious change - Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Zoroastrian - that used various forms of religious authority to legitimize their reform programmes. Such movements were both indigenous and colonial in their origins and Professor Jones shows how each adapted to the challenge of competing nationalisms as political circumstances changed. The volumes in this part of the History consider the overall impact of British rule upon the whole sphere of religion, social behaviour and culture. Its coverage is both historical and religious and Socio-religious Reform Movements in British India will appeal to students and scholars in a wide variety of social scientific disciplines.
The Price of Liberty

This is an account of de-colonialization in Nigeria as seen through the eyes of a Nigerian political leader who was closely involved in the process. This book is therefore partly a biography of a man, Adegoke Adelabu; much more though, it tells in a highly personal and intriguing way how a Nigerian politician operated in the last years of colonial rule. The story of Adelabu's life is an interesting one. He is an example of one of the 'new men' who led African nations to independence in the fifties and sixties. His family was not closely connected with the traditional chieftainships of his native city, Ibadan, but he was sufficiently well placed to take advantage of such secondary school education as was available to African boys in the thirties. After a number of vicissitudes, involving abortive careers as a government official, working for one of the big British trading concerns and on his own account, Adelabu found his role as a popular leader and 'boss' of Ibadan politics.

Ethics and Evidence-Based Medicine

Ethics and Evidence-Based Medicine

Kenneth W. Goodman

Cambridge University Press
2002
pokkari
The growth of evidence-based medicine has occurred against a backdrop of health care reform, managed care, cost containment and quality improvement, and clinicians have been urged to adopt the rigors of science while remaining true to their ‘clinical judgment’. This tension - between efforts to make medical practice more scientific and the suspicions of many clinicians - has caused one of the greatest practical and ethical challenges in the history of the health professions. This incisive book reviews the history and conceptual origins of evidence-based practice, and discusses key ethical issues that arise in clinical practice, public health and health policy. Essential reading for all physicians, and practitioners in epidemiology and public health, it will also be suitable as a text in medical and public health school courses on evidence-based practice.

Economics and Marijuana

Economics and Marijuana

Kenneth W. Clements; Xueyan Zhao

Cambridge University Press
2009
sidottu
Do marijuana users cut back on consumption when the price rises? To what degree is marijuana consumption related to drinking and tobacco usage? What would happen if marijuana were legalised and taxed in the same way as alcohol and tobacco? Is marijuana priced in a similar way to other goods? Economics and Marijuana deals with these and other questions by drawing on a rich set of data concerning the consumption and pricing of marijuana in Australia, a country where the drug has been decriminalised in some, but not all, states. The book applies the economic approach to drugs to analyse consumption, pricing and the economics of legalising the use of marijuana. The result is a fascinating analysis of this widely used, but little understood illicit drug that provides much needed information and policy advice for a wide range of readers, including economists, policy makers and health professionals.
Why I Believed: Reflections of a Former Missionary

Why I Believed: Reflections of a Former Missionary

Kenneth W Daniels

Kenneth W. Daniels
2008
pokkari
This is a story of a true Christian who believed for nearly three decades, having grown up the son of evangelical missionary parents, later becoming a missionary himself. Yet he slowly lost his faith and now no longer holds it. In this part-autobiography, part-expose, Ken traces his journey from evangelical missionary to secular humanist while remaining part of a committed Christian family. He looks back at a number of reasons he remained a believer for over a decade after his initial doubts began at university, critically evaluating each one in a separate chapter. Whether or not you agree with Ken's conclusions, you will find his journey and his reasons for taking it fascinating and informative. You will end up better understanding, if not appreciating, the mind of apostates whose desire is to follow the evidence wherever it leads.

So, you say you are "spiritual but not religious"? Let's think about that for a minute.Do you mean that you have an active spiritual life without identifying with a specific religious institution? That's fine. But suppose religion is not about institutions. Suppose religion is an essential human activity. Then what?Imagine you are an anthropologist sent to an alien planet and assigned the task of finding what human-like institutions the inhabitants have. How would you decide whether they have religion? You'd need a filter fine enough to capture all the earthly religions from Animism to Zoroastrianism. What would that filter be? In this intellectual memoir, Collier explores the implications of his answer to that question.Kenneth Collier was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on March 26, 1945, and was raised in Wilmington, Delaware. He earned a PhD in philosophy in 1971 and taught philosophy for several years at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Leaving academia, he earned a Master of Divinity at Starr King School for the Ministry and was ordained to the Unitarian Universalist ministry in 1979. After serving several churches in both coasts, he retired and lives with his wife, Anne Anderson, in Santa Barbara, California.
