Daylighting and Integrated Lighting Design provides architects, building designers, and students clear direction for the successful inclusion of daylight and integrated electric light in buildings. It presents design teams with the performance analysis resources, energy saving estimates and user satisfaction results they need in order to make informed decisions regarding daylighting and lighting design. Written by two well-known experts in the field, the book provides: critical geometric and material relationships along with proven design process activities, offered in a quick-reference format, with sufficient context to address the range of associated issues present in any building project both the "fundamentals" and "applications" which cover design concepts and practice activities applicable to all integrated lighting projects specific directives for how the concepts covered are applied in a range of common design scenarios, including architectural rules-of-thumb, instructions for ensuring visual comfort, and preferred approaches for electric lighting control integration. In demonstrating these necessary insights to designers, the authors employ an iterative analysis of common "daylighting patterns" and illustrate and annotate both successful and unsuccessful examples via built form and simulation. Part of the PocketArchitecture series, this is the ideal pocketbook for any designer serious about reducing the energy impact of their buildings.

In addition to conserving energy, the use of daylight in architecture can be a powerful aesthetic tool. The effective employment of natural lighting is an important component of sustainable design, and some of the best work in this area comes from the Northwest. This practice-based book focuses on fourteen projects ranging from schools to community centers to office buildings to a garbage/recycling center. It discusses the particular challenges of each project and the solutions found by the design teams as they sought to take advantage of daylight to create pleasant, workable, energy-efficient spaces. In each case, consideration has been given to location, elevation, orientation, microclimate throughout the seasons, and the effect on light of surrounding structures, land forms, and trees, as well as to the lighting requirements of occupants. While some sustainable design strategies are general and not specific to place, place-specific opportunities and challenges are especially important in daylighting design. This book spotlights innovative design in a region heavily influenced by climate and landscape, makes use of environmentally friendly technologies, and looks at projects that aim to achieve social as well as aesthetic goals. It will be of great value to architects, engineers, lighting designers, and green building consultants, as well as to students in these fields.

This guide introduces applied antiracist developmental science and developmental frameworks that have been comprehensively integrated with antiracist principles. It underscores the importance of viewing child and adolescent development-related work through an antiracist lens from the outset, examining how systemic racism, implicit bias, and critical consciousness shape human development, and emphasizes the need to cultivate an antiracist developmental perspective to promote equity in professional settings.Anchored in the foundational bioecological model, this book extends to additional frameworks such as the Racism + Resilience + Resistance Integrative Study of Childhood Ecosystem (R³ISE), the Integrative Model of Ethnic Minority Development, the Multicontextual Model for Diverse Learning Environments, and the Phenomenological Variant of Ecological Systems Theory (PVEST). These frameworks are adapted to confront racism and support antiracist practices.Targeted discussions in dedicated chapters cover fields including psychology, PK-12 education, higher education, and allied health. This book bridges theory and practice through case studies, practical examples, and reflective activities, demonstrating how to incorporate antiracist strategies into daily professional practice. It also delves into how community assets can be protective and mitigate the effects of racism, guiding professionals to recognize and leverage these strengths effectively. This resource is designed for students, pre-professionals, and early-career professionals in child and adolescent development committed to incorporating antiracist practices into their work. It serves as both an introductory overview and a practical manual for applying developmental principles with an emphasis on reflection and praxis.

Patrick van Rensburg (1931–2017) was an anti-apartheid activist and self-made 'alternative educationist' whose work received international recognition with the Right Livelihood Award in 1981. Born in KwaZulu-Natal into what he described as a 'very ordinary South African family that believed in the virtue of racism', Van Rensburg became a self-styled rebel who tirelessly pursued his own vision of a brighter future for emerging societies in post-colonial southern Africa. His emotional and intellectual struggle against his upbringing and cultural roots led him to reject his life of white privilege in South Africa. Determined to prevent the emergence of a privileged black elite in post-colonial society, he devoted his life to implementing an alternative, egalitarian approach to education, focusing on quality and functional schooling for the majority. Rewarded with the internationally prestigious Right Livelihood Award for his unique contribution to education, he saw this work as a 'necessary tool of development'. Exiled from South Africa in 1960 because of his involvement in the London boycott campaign that gave birth to the Anti-Apartheid Movement, Van Rensburg moved to Botswana (then Bechuanaland). There he founded cooperatives, provided vocational training and was among the earliest educationists to espouse the discipline of development studies. Perhaps his best-known legacy is the Swaneng Hill School, which he founded to provide an educational home for primary school 'dropouts' through a curriculum that combined theory and practice, and academic and manual labour. He involved his pupils in building their school, running it, providing their own food, and making their own equipment and furniture. Van Rensburg was an innovative and charismatic visionary who captured the zeitgeist of the late twentieth century, and whose work and vision still have resonance for debates in educational policy today.

The tenth volume in the Beyond Salsa Piano series focuses on C sar "Pupy" Pedroso, the founding pianist and one of the principal composers of Cuba's most popular band, Los Van Van, and now the leader of Los Que Son Son, the most successful new Cuban group of the 2000s. Pedroso was ranked #1 in the timba.com readers' poll for "Best Timba Pianist of All-Time" and came in second in the songwriting department. Doubling as a history and music appreciation course, the book contains extensive music notation examples of Pedroso's piano tumbaos, or "montunos", as well as transcriptions of solo and head arrangements. The difficulty level is intermediate, falling between the very easy exercises in the early volumes, and the sometimes complex tumbaos of Volumes 6-9, which deal with Mel n Lewis of The Issac Delgado Group.Illustrated in detail is Pupy Pedroso's trademark "contrary motion" montuno style, which, while very easy to execute produce much richer sounding harmonies than the standard salsa approach. The book also includes "sidebar" sections on the importance of rumba in salsa, rhythm section "gears", controlled improvisation and the evolution of bass tumbaos in Cuban music.Bass tumbaos are included for each of the 54 piano transcriptions and some also include string section guajeos and second keyboard parts.Volume 10 also includes a detailed biography with rare photos from Pupy's private collection and information about his extensive musical family. The discgraphy section lists Pupy's work in two ways: by album, and by song, as many of his compositions were recorded by various artists. There are dozens of excellent photographs by Tom Ehrlich, David Garten, Patrick Bonnard and others top photographic artists. The author, Kevin Moore, has also written "The Tom s Cruz Conga Method" and "Beyond Salsa Percussion", is working on "Beyond Salsa Bass" and is the music editor of the world's largest Cuban music website, timba.com. 11 other volumes are currently available.

This is the eleventh Volume of "Beyond Salsa Piano", the fourteenth of the "Beyond Salsa" series, and the second on C sar "Pupy" Pedroso, founding pianist and composer of Los Van Van and leader of Los Que Son Son, two of the most popular and long-running bands in Cuban music history.Volume 10 began with Pupy's first compositions for Los Van Van in 1979. Volume 11 covers the period from 1984 to 1988. Whenever we come to a song that has been re-arranged and re-recorded by Pupy's present-day timba group, we study the modern group's version as well. For two of the Los Que Son Son songs we include complete bass/piano charts of the entire arrangement.

When ancient Persian conquerors created a vast empire from the Mediterranean to the Indus, encompassing many peoples speaking many different languages, they triggered demographic changes that caused their own language to be transformed. Persian grammar has ever since borne testimony to the social history of the ancient Persian Empire. This study of the early evolution of the Persian language bridges ancient history and new linguistics. Written for historians, philologists, linguists, and classical scholars, as well as those interested specifically in Persian and Iranian studies, it explains the correlation between the character of a language's grammar and the history of its speakers. It paves the way for new investigations into linguistic history, a field complimentary with but distinct from historical linguistics. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
