In the past decade of marketing scholarship, researchers have begun to examine the promise of AI technology to address practical problems through a consumer lens. Artificial Intelligence in Marketing and Consumer Behavior Research reviews the state of the art of behavioral consumer research involving AI-human interactions and divides the literature into two primary areas based on whether the reported effects are instantiations of consumers displaying a positive or negative response to encounters with AI. This monograph aims to contribute to the literature by integrating the growing body of AI research in marketing and consumer psychology. In doing so, the authors focus on the burgeoning yet less examined behavioral studies conducted in marketing and consumer behavior. They also identify the theories and process mechanisms that explain the reported effects.Artificial Intelligence in Marketing and Consumer Behavior Research proceeds as follows. Section 1 examines the history of AI research in marketing. Section 2 reviews and categorizes the decision contexts explored to date in this literature, while identifying the key theoretical constructs explored in these contexts. Section 3 provides an overview of moderators that have been demonstrated to alter the effects of AI-related consumption. Section 4 examines psychological processes that underlie consumer responses to and decisions involving AI. Section 5 provides the stimuli and manipulations employed in this research to date, while also suggesting a taxonomy of AI agents to guide future research designs. Section 6 offers future research directions for behavioral AI research in marketing.

As the study of environmental policy and justice becomes increasingly significant in today’s global climate, standard statistical approaches to gathering data have become less helpful at generating new insights and possibilities. None of the conventional frameworks easily allow for the empirical modeling of the interactions of all the actors involved, or for the emergence of outcomes unintended by the actors. The existing frameworks account for the "what," but not for the "why."Heather E. Campbell, Yushim Kim, and Adam Eckerd bring an innovative perspective to environmental justice research. Their approach adjusts the narrower questions often asked in the study of environmental justice, expanding to broader investigations of how and why environmental inequities occur. Using agent-based modeling (ABM), they study the interactions and interdependencies among different agents such as firms, residents, and government institutions. Through simulation, the authors test underlying assumptions in environmental justice and discover ways to modify existing theories to better explain why environmental injustice occurs. Furthermore, they use ABM to generate empirically testable hypotheses, which they employ to check if their simulated findings are supported in the real world using real data. The pioneering research on environmental justice in this text will have effects on the field of environmental policy as a whole. For social science and policy researchers, this book explores how to employ new and experimental methods of inquiry on challenging social problems, and for the field of environmental justice, the authors demonstrate how ABM helps illuminate the complex social and policy interactions that lead to both environmental justice and injustice.

This book argues that, given the complex nature of the urban environment, we cannot find one optimal solution to reducing environmental injustice, in part because there is no singular cause. Environmental injustice emerges in particular settings because of the combined and interdependent effects of a variety of different policy and community characteristics. The authors argue that addressing these interlinked problems requires an understanding of the clusters of community and contextual factors that combine in a variety of ways to both create problems and imply policy approaches to managing them. They argue for the use of complexity-informed methods to assist in making public policy choices, such as Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) and Agent-based Modeling (ABM), to enable us to better identify plausible solutions for specific contexts. This volume offers a new perspective for strategically managing urban policy that considers the risk of gentrification and gentrification-related displacement, with the ultimate goal of improving social justice. Environmental injustice, pollution remediation, gentrification, and displacement are interlinked problems, all of which impinge on social justice in US cities. However, public policy research, and often practice as well, has tended to separately consider urban policy issues such as environmental injustice, brownfields and other pollution remediation, how to redevelop neighborhoods, and how to contend with gentrification and displacement. In this book the authors take a new perspective to such intertwined urban policy issues, using complexity thinking and, more importantly, complex adaptive systems approaches, in order to develop context-sensitive policy approaches to managing these ongoing problems.

An epic rendition of the imperial experience in India, and perhaps his greatest long work, the Penguin Classics edition of Rudyard Kipling's Kim is edited with an introduction by Harish Trivedi, and includes a general preface by Jan Montefiore.Kim, orphaned son of an Irish soldier and a poor white mother, and the lama, an old ascetic priest, are on a quest. Kim was born and raised in India and plays with the slum children as he lives on the streets, but he is white, a sahib, and wants to play the Great Game of Imperialism; while the priest must find redemption from the Wheel of Things. Kim celebrates their friendship and their journeys in a beautiful but hostile environment, capturing the opulence of the exotic landscape and the uneasy presence of the British Raj. Filled with rich description and vivid characters, this beguiling coming of age story is considered to be Kipling's masterpiece. Part of a series of new editions of Kipling's works in Penguin Classics, this volume contains a General Preface by Jan Montefiore and an introduction by Harish Trivedi placing the novel in its literary and social context.Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was born in Bombay. In 1882 he started work as a journalist in India, and while there produced a body of work, stories, sketches and poems - notably Plain Tales from the Hills (1888) - which made him an instant literary celebrity when he returned to England in 1889. His most famous works include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901) and the Just So Stories (1902). Kipling refused to accept the role of Poet Laureate and other civil honours, but he was the first English writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize, in 1907.If you enjoyed Kim, you might like E.M.
