On the edge, under water

Helge Ryggvik; Kristin Øye Gjerde

"On the edge, under water" documents offhore diving and the pioneer divers on the Norwegian continental shelf. Historians Kristin Øye Gjerde and Helge Ryggvik have sought to provide a nuanced and broad-based historical presentation, which carries the story from the start of oil exploration on the NCS down to the present day. Divers in the North Sea have been key players in developing the Norwegian oil industry. They helped to establish a new and unknown industry, which presented substantial challenges and the need to move boundaries. The authors write about the divers and their work, technological development and research, the diving companies, unionisation and government regulation. They provide an insight into a tough and risky profession, where accidents and tragedies have made their mark. Engelsk utgave av boken "Nordsjødykkerne" som ble utgitt i 2009, med oppdatert forord vedr. Strasbourg-dommen.

Drama and Education provides a practical, comprehensive guide to drama as a tool for teaching and learning. It is among the first practical drama and performance textbooks that address brain-based, neuroscientific research, making the argument that creativity is necessary in our lives, that embodied learning is natural and essential, and that contextual learning helps us find our place in society in relationship to other peoples and cultures. As well as a historical and theoretical overview of the field, it provides rationale and techniques for several specific methodologies: linear drama, process-oriented drama, drama for social justice, and performance art. Each approach is supplemented with sample lesson plans, activities, ideas for differentiation, and extensive bibliographies. The topics are discussed from five key angles:• Historical and theoretical foundations• Curricular applications• Practical toolkits for a range of classrooms and learning environments• Different strategies for lesson plans• Extension options for longer workshops.Alongside these core methods, the integration of other innovative forms—from performance art to Theatre of the Oppressed—into drama-based learning is explored, as well as the pragmatic concerns such as assessment, planning, and advocacy for arts learning and arts education partnerships. Drama and Education is the comprehensive textbook for teachers and students on Applied Theatre and Theatre and Education courses.

This report summarizes insights about prescription drug misuse (PDM) among active-duty personnel. It also presents the framework of an analytic tool that, once informed by data available to the military but not available to the authors, can help the military predict future trends in PDM based on current demographics of active-duty service members and rates of injury and prescribing of prescription drugs.

The World's Water Volume 9: The Report on Freshwater Resources

The World's Water: The Report on Freshwater Resources (from the Pacific Institute) is the pre-eminent publication regularly addressing global freshwater challenges and solutions. The first volume was published in 1998 and the current volume - the ninth - continues the tradition of tackling timely, critical freshwater problems in a fresh, easy-to-read style. Information on the previous volumes and important water data can be found online at www.worldwater.org. When the first volume of The World's Water was published in 1998, the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for 2015 had not even been established. The concepts of water "footprints," "virtual water," "corporate water stewardship," "peak water," and other now-central topics had not yet been put forward or were mostly unknown. Yet today, the MDGs have been replaced with a new set of comprehensive environmental and social targets, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. A wide variety of research, academic, advocacy, and policy groups are addressing water problems in new and innovative ways. And the demand for good water analysis is greater than ever. This new volume continues to offer insights into critical global water problems, overviews of data and analysis around water use and management, and case studies of some of the greatest water challenges around the world. The chapters in the current volume include the issue of corporate water stewardship, the human right to water and sanitation, water-use trends in the United States, an assessment of the water footprint of California energy, the consequences of the severe five-year California drought, a review of water markets and economic strategies for water management, and a summary of the cost of alternative water supply and demand strategies. The current volume also includes the regular update on the Pacific Institute's unique Water Conflict Chronology, with historical examples of conflicts related to water going back to 2500 BC and new entries through early 2017; a summary of the 2017 Pontifical Academy of Sciences Vatican meeting on the human right to water; and a review of critical issues around public access to water through drinking fountains. The World's Water has always been about more than just bad news. There is plenty of good news and there are many innovative efforts underway to identify and implement sustainable water solutions. The latest volume continues the tradition of bringing these solutions to students, the public, policy makers, and scientists working to understand the world of water.

Understanding Argument in a Post-Truth World provides students with the necessary skills to help them critically evaluate the situations they face in a technologically driven, "post-truth" world. Authors Heather Walters and Kristen Stout explore how the use of technology has changed the way people argue, and how disinformation, information overload, and polarization have impacted the study of argumentation.Ten focused and accessible chapters give students the information they need to effectively participate in everyday arguments and how to engage in productive civil discourse. It also covers the practical benefits of critical thinking, provides updated analysis of some core argumentation concepts, and demonstrates how to make better decisions. This thoroughly updated edition considers how recent events such COVID-19 (and its ensuing debates over masking and vaccines) and the spread of disinformation (into areas beyond those of just politics) are impacting our lives and altering the culture of argument. This is an ideal textbook for courses in argumentation, civil discourse, and communication and critical thinking.
