Freedom and Protection

Freedom and Protection

This book examines the history of monastic exemption in France. It reveals an institutional story of monastic freedom and protection, deeply rooted in the religious, political, social and legal culture of the early Middle Ages. Traversing many geo-political boundaries and fields of historical specialisation, the book defines the meaning and value of exemption to French monasteries between the sixth and eleventh centuries. It demonstrates how enduring relationships with the apostolic see in Rome ultimately contributed to an emerging identity of papal authority, the growth of early monasticism, Frankish politics and governance, church reform and canon law.

Lexi has fulfilled her destiny and now the gods have awakened. But is that a good thing? Now Lexi lives in a world that is on the brink of a global collapse. The gods are angry for being forsaken and are seeking revenge on humanity. Tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, famine, and flood are causing global chaos. And the sun is being held hostage in a phenomenal, never-ending solar eclipse by the avenging Helios. Then there is the problem of Zeus's threat: Lexi must choose between giving herself to him or watching the "abominable" angels die by his hands. Not to mention, Hera, Zeus's jealous wife, is proposing her own jealous-driven proposition to Lexi: stay away from her husband or the angels and everyone dear to her will die. Seeing no way out of either predicament puts a strain on her relationship with Cole. Will she lose him either way? What people are saying about the 'Lunangelique' Series: Lunangelique is one of those books that once you start to read you can't stop Ruty from Reading... Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism Lib/E: And Other Arguments for Economic Independence
A spirited, deeply researched exploration of why capitalism is bad for women and how, when done right, socialism leads to economic independence, better labor conditions, better work-life balance and, yes, even better sex.In a witty, irreverent op-ed piece that went viral, Kristen Ghodsee argued that women had better sex under socialism. The response was tremendous-clearly she articulated something many women had sensed for years: the problem is with capitalism, not with us.Ghodsee, an acclaimed ethnographer and professor of Russian and East European Studies, spent years researching what happened to women in countries that transitioned from state socialism to capitalism. She argues here that unregulated capitalism disproportionately harms women, and that we should learn from the past. By rejecting the bad and salvaging the good, we can adapt some socialist ideas to the 21st century and improve our lives. She tackles all aspects of a woman's life-work, parenting, sex and relationships, citizenship, and leadership. In a chapter called Women: Like Men, But Cheaper, she talks about women in the workplace, discussing everything from the wage gap to harassment and discrimination. In What to Expect When You're Expecting Exploitation, she addresses motherhood and how having it all is impossible under capitalism.Women are standing up for themselves like never before, from the increase in the number of women running for office to the women's march to the long-overdue public outcry against sexual harassment. Interest in socialism is also on the rise-whether it's the popularity of Bernie Sanders or the skyrocketing membership numbers of the Democratic Socialists of America. It's become increasingly clear to women that capitalism isn't working for us, and Ghodsee is the informed, lively guide who can show us the way forward.
Darwin’s Falling Sparrow

Darwin’s Falling Sparrow

The "Darwin Story" has been told in many different ways and from a wide range of perspectives. Some focus on the detailed development of evolution theory. Others examine the ways in which evolution was used to justify different ideologies. But no one has told this tale as a story of mothers, fathers, and families wrestling with alternative explanations of suffering in a time of tremendously high child mortality rates. Darwin's Falling Sparrow explores how both Darwin and his readers confronted evolutionary ideas as more than scientists, ministers, or public intellectuals. They were also parents, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, and friends, who, in their attempt to devise a new explanation for the ubiquitous "Fall of Every Sparrow," were inspired to see the world through new, extraordinary lenses that altered the course of history, science, and medicine. The book applies a biographical, narrative lens to explore what people in the past believed and why, and how and why those beliefs - about God, nature, history, and human agency - changed over time. As an historian of science with fifteen years' experience conveying the complexities of the history of science and religion to undergraduates, I take the reader to this past with empathetic attention to the role of suffering in the history of evolutionary thought. As we approach the centennial of the most famous trial over teaching evolution (the Scopes Trial of 1925), we need histories that are accessible and relevant to non-academic readers who are interested in understanding stances and debates, rather than books that simply offer ammunition for one side or the other. This kind of history directs our attention to questions that can help us navigate debates in the present in a more informed, empathetic way: What are the fundamental beliefs driving stances and conflicts? What assumptions and values are at stake amid conflicts over science and science-driven policy? Darwin's Falling Sparrow will appeal to anyone interested in understanding the complex factors that often drive both historical and present-day debates about the role of science in the modern world.
Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism: And Other Arguments for Economic Independence
A "brilliant," "engaging," and "valuable," (Financial Times) exploration of why capitalism hurts women and how socialism, when done right, can bring economic independence, better labor conditions and, yes, even better sex. In Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism, acclaimed ethnographer Kristen R. Ghodsee argues that unregulated capitalism disproportionately harms women--at work, at home, in government, and in the bedroom. Having spent years researching what happened to women in countries that transitioned from state socialism to capitalism, Ghodsee claims that by rejecting the bad and salvaging the good, we can adapt some socialist ideas to the twenty-first century and improve our lives. This book is a spirited, witty, and deeply researched exploration of why socialism--when done right--can lead to economic independence, better work life balance, and yes, even better sex. It's become increasingly clear to women that capitalism isn't working for us, and Ghodsee is the informed, lively guide who can show us the way forward.
Medieval Canon Law

Medieval Canon Law

Canon law is an unavoidable theme for medieval historians. It intersects with every aspect of medieval life and society, and at one point or another, every medievalist works on the law. In this book, Kriston Rennie looks at the early medieval origins and development of canon law though a social history framework, with a view to making sense of a rich and complex legal system and culture, and an equally rich scholarly tradition. It was in the early Middle Ages that the ancient traditions, norms, customs, and rationale of the Church were shaped into legislative procedure. The structures and rationale behind the law’s formulation – its fundamental purpose, reason for existence and proliferation, and methods of creation and collection – explain how the medieval Church and society was influenced and controlled. They also, as this short book argues, explain how it ultimately functioned.
Everyday Utopia: What 2,000 Years of Wild Experiments Can Teach Us about the Good Life
A "fascinating" (The Wall Street Journal), "spirited and inspiring" (Jacobin) tour through the ages in search of the thinkers and communities that have dared to reimagine how we might better live our daily lives. In the 6th century BCE, the Greek philosopher Pythagoras--a man remembered today more for his theorem about right-angled triangles than for his progressive politics--founded a commune in a seaside village in what's now southern Italy. The men and women there shared their property, lived as equals, and dedicated themselves to the study of mathematics and the mysteries of the universe. Ever since, humans have been dreaming up better ways to organize how we live together, pool our resources, raise our children, and determine who's part of our families. Some of these experiments burned brightly for only a brief while, but others carry on today: from the Danish cohousing communities that share chores and deepen neighborly bonds, to matriarchal Colombian ecovillages where residents grow their own food; and from Connecticut, where new laws make it easier for extra "alloparents" to help raise children not their own, to China where planned microdistricts ensure everything a busy household might need is nearby. One of those startlingly rare books that upends what you think is possible, Everyday Utopia provides a "powerful reminder that dreaming of better worlds is not just some fantastical project, but also a political one" (Rebecca Traister, New York Times bestselling author of Good and Mad). This "must-read" (Thomas Piketty, New York Times bestselling author of A Brief History of Equality) offers a radically hopeful vision for how to build more contented and connected societies, alongside a practical guide to what we all can do in the meantime to live the good life each and every day.

The Destruction and Recovery of Monte Cassino, 529-1964

Between the sixth and twentieth centuries, the Benedictine Abbey of Monte Cassino (est. 529) experienced a cycle of atrocities which forever transformed its identity. This book examines how such a tumultuous history has been constructed, remembered, and represented from the Middle Ages to the present day. It uses this singular and pivotal case to analyse the historical process of remembering and its impact on modern representations of the past. Exactly how Monte Cassino is remembered is distinctive and diagnostic. The abbey is recognizable today as a beacon of western civilization, culture, and learning precisely because of its 'destruction tradition' over fourteen centuries. The Destruction and Recovery of Monte Cassino, 529.1964 asks how the abbey’s fragmented past has been ideologically, politically, and culturally constituted and preserved; how its experience with destruction and suffering . and recovery and rebirth . has become incorporated into a modern narrative of progress and triumph.

A list of suggested books is also included.
