The founding principles of traditional Karate, and this is particularly so for all students of Tetsute Do Karate, is the development of self-knowledge, self-discipline, humility and an indomitable spirit. We must develop self-knowledge to understand what our strengths and weaknesses are, the self-discipline to practise those things that need improvement, the humility to understand that we are not perfect and an indomitable spirit to keep us going when everything seems just too hard.

My Life in the Art of Shorin Ryu Matsubayashi Ryu Karate
Anthony Fergusons love of martial arts began when he was a little boy growing up in Miami, Florida. There he would go with his brother to see kung fu movies at the theater every Saturday. As a teenager, Ferguson decided he needed to know how to defend himself from an attack after a bad experience, and fate drew him to a school that taught the style of Shorin-Ryu Matsubayashi-Ryu karate. Shortly after graduating from high school, he earned his first-degree black belt, and he has never looked back. Now he recalls his lifelong journey in practicing Shorin-Ryu karate. Using his personal narrative, he hopes to encourage others to learn about this martial art and the benefits it can bring to those who study it: discipline, focus, respect for others, self-control, and awareness. In this memoir, one man shares the story of his path in the martial arts from student to master and recounts how studying karate as a teenager changed his life for the better.

The Japanese philosopher Miki Kiyoshi opens doors to all those interested in rethinking the problem of imagination, myth, and technology.Miki Kiyoshi is one of the central figures in the Kyoto School, often spoken of as the heir of Kitaro Nishida. Born in Japan in 1897, he died in prison shortly after the end of World War II in 1945 at the age of 48.Miki's The Logic of Imagination first appeared in the journal Thought in 1937 under the themes of “Myth,” “Institution,” and “Technology”. The next part, “Experience,” was serialized in the same journal and Miki continued to work on the final part, but was never completed it due to his arrest. This translation makes this seminal work available in English for the first time. Featuring an introduction and accompanied throughout by contextual notes, it includes essential information about Miki's life and work. Miki’s philosophy of the imagination anticipated later theories found first in Hannah Arendt, and then in Paul Ricoeur and most recently in Charles Taylor. The connection Miki makes of the imagination with technology anticipates ideas of the technological imagination in Don Ihde and Bernard Stiegler. Miki's thinking about the imagination illuminates our understanding of technology and how we behave in the world. This accessible, critical edition of his work does justice to one of the most unfairly underrated authors of Japanese philosophy.

Where do poems come from? This beautiful picture book about a young aspiring poet and his grandfather shows that the answer lies all around us--if we take the time to look. After Kiyoshi watches his grandfather, Eto, compose his delicate haiku, he wonders out loud: Where do poems come from? His grandfather answers by taking him on a walk through their city, where they see a cat perched on a hill of oranges; hear the fluttering of wings; imagine what's behind a tall wall; and discuss their walk, with each incident inspiring a wonderful new haiku from Eto. As Kiyoshi discovers that poems come from the way the world outside of us meets the world within each of us, he also finds the courage to write a haiku of his own. This lovely book will speak to any reader who treasures poetry, city life, grandparents, or the beauty of the everyday.

Kiyoshi and the Grumpy Ghost is a light-hearted tale about a lovesick Japanese school teacher haunted by the ghost of a 17th century British Naval Captain. The ancient mariner seeks his aid to find eternal rest. After coming to terms with the existence of the hereafter, Kiyoshi's life goes steadily downhill by his effort to rid himself of his unwanted visitor. Read this amusing and interesting tale to find out if Kiyoshi gets the girl of his dreams and also manages to get rid of his unwelcome ethereal visitor."Kiyoshi feigned concentration and waited for the right moment. The man turned away and Kiyoshi with one swift movement lunged at the umbrella, grabbed hold of the lower part, swung it in an arc and brought the handle down with all the force he could muster on the stranger's head. Kiyoshi prepared himself for the impact of the instrument against the skull of the intruder. Instead of the dull thud of struck bone there was just the swish of the umbrella's fabric as it sliced through the air followed by a crack as the metal handle made contact with the floor. The stranger turned in time to see the figure of Kiyoshi in the final stage of collapse. He shrugged, gave a sigh of resignation and regarded the prostrate middle-aged schoolteacher flat out on the floor."
Kyosai: The Israel Goldman Collection
The Japanese artist Kawanabe Kyosai (1831–1889) was celebrated for his exciting impromptu performances at calligraphy and painting parties. Dynamic, playful and provocative, Kyosai delighted his audience with spontaneous and speedy paintings of demons, skeletons, deities and Buddhist saints. These were often satirical, reflecting a time of political and cultural change in Japan. Among his most charming and inventive works are his brilliant depictions of animals, which humorously play the roles of protagonists of modern life. Kyosai’s important place in Japanese art is here explored in depth by Sadamura Koto, a leading authority on the artist, in this catalogue of the exceptionally rich holdings of the Israel Goldman Collection.
