Ernest Hemingway & Gary Cooper in Idaho: An Enduring Friendship

Ernest Hemingway & Gary Cooper in Idaho: An Enduring Friendship

Larry E. Morris

In the autumn of 1940, two icons of American culture met in Sun Valley, Idaho--writer Ernest Hemingway and actor Gary Cooper. Although "Hem" was known as brash, larger-than-life and hard-drinking and "Coop" as courteous, non-confrontational and taciturn, the two became good friends. And though they would see each other over the years in Hollywood, Cuba, New York and Paris, it was to Idaho they always returned. Here they hunted together, waded through marshes and hiked sagebrush-covered hills, sometimes talking and sometimes not but continually forging a close comradeship. That bond sustained them through the highs and lows of stardom, through personal trials and triumphs and from their first conversation to their deaths seven weeks apart in 1961. Author Larry Morris celebrates the story of that unforgettable friendship.

A Treasury of Latter-Day Saint Letters

What did David O. McKay say about the theory of evolution, or George Albert Smith about Saints thinking for themselves? Why did Relief Society president Eliza R. Snow and others write a heartfelt letter of appreciation to the governor of the Utah territory? With fifteen new letters, this revised edition of A Treasury of Latter-day Saint Letters answers these and other intriguing questions through the words of early Church figures, from apostles to Joseph Smith's relatives. Historian Larry Morris, formerly with the Ensign and the Joseph Smith Papers, explains the historical context of each epistle and presents the text of the letter itself. Preserving the exact words and spelling of the writer, this inspiring and thought-provoking volume offers a glimpse into the personal lives and candid feelings of a host of prominent Church members--a rare view not often seen from the pulpit or in history books.
Stratospheric Ozone Depletion

Stratospheric Ozone Depletion

For two decades, scientists have been warning that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and halons (bromine-containing fluorocarbons) may deplete the stratospheric ozone shield that screens out some of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet rays and thus regulates the amounts which reach the Earth's surface. CFCs have been used as refrigerants, solvents, foam blowing agents, and outside the United States, as aerosol propellants; Halons are used primarily as fire-fighting agents. Increased radiation could result in an increase in skin cancers, suppression of the human immune system, and decreased productivity of terrestrial and aquatic organisms, including some commercially important crops. This book deals with implementation, policy issues and phase out of methyl bromide. In September 1987, 47 countries (including the United States) agreed to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, which first required controls on the world's consumption of ozone depleting substances. Over 160 countries have signed on to the Protocol, whose phasedown schedule for developed countries was accelerated twice and completely phased out Halon production at the end of 1994 and CFC production at the end of 1995. The Protocol's coverage has also been extended to include hydrochlorofluorocarbons and other chlorine- and bromine-containing substances such as some solvents and methyl bromide, a widely used soil fumigant.

Written by a multi-disciplinary team of experts in neurobehaviour, this concise, well-illustrated book provides long-awaited normative data on clock drawing from ages 20 to 90 years. A practical guide to the quantitative assessment of clock drawing, it also takes a process-oriented approach to qualitative impairment. The authors discuss clock drawing as a neuropsychological test instrument and the rationale for selecting specific time settings, as well as the basis for using different clock conditions. The book contains numerous examples of clocks drawn by patients with cognitive impairment due to dementia, metabolic encephalopathy, traumatic brain injury, disconnection syndrome and focal brain lesions. Insight into changes in clock drawing ability that may represent the earliest markers of cognitive decline in dementia are also presented. This volume will be of interest to clinicians and researchers in neuropsychology, neurology, psychiatry, geriatric medicine, language therapy, and occupational therapy. It offers readers normative data on the clock drawing task, guidelines for administration and scoring, and a rich selection of clock drawings that illustrate the abnormalities commonly encountered in clinical practice and research.

Addressing both renowned theories and standard applications, Stories of Life in the Workplace explains how stories affect human practices and organizational life. Authors Larry Browning and George H. Morris explore how we experience, interpret, and personalize narrative stories in our everyday lives, and how these communicative acts impact our social aims and interactions. In pushing the boundaries of how we perceive narrative and organization, the authors include stories that are broadly applicable across all concepts and experiences. With a perception of narrative and its organizational application, chapters focus on areas such as pedagogy, therapy, project management, strategic planning, public communication, and organizational culture. Readers will learn to: differentiate and gain an in-depth understanding of perspectives from varying narrators; recognize how stories are constructed and used in organizations, and modify the stories they tell; view stories as a means to promote an open exchange of creativity. By integrating a range of theories and practices, Browning and Morris write for an audience of narrative novices and scholars alike. With a distinctive approach and original insight, Stories of Life in the Workplace shows how individuality, developing culture, and the psychology of the self are constructed with language—and how the acceptance of one’s self is accomplished by reaffirming and rearranging one’s story.

Males at Risk

Males at Risk

SAGE Publications Inc

It happens. Male children and adolescents are sexually abused, sexually misused, and involved with adults, peers, and siblings in ways that inhibit the development of normal sexuality. In Males at Risk, the authors examine why sexual abuse occurs, how prevalent the problem is among male populations, and offer suggestions for clinicians working with sexually abused children. The authors examine environmental factors which may contribute to child sexual abuse, explore the long-term impact on child victims, the differences between male and female child victims, the role of perpetrators, and evaluation, assessment, and treatment issues. Finally, the authors provide step-by-step case guidelines for clinicians involved in treating abused male children. "Clinicians will welcome this long overdue resource. . . . Refreshingly, clinicians are encouraged both to evaluate individual differences in determining the meaning of the abuse itself and to attend to the full range of emotional, sexual, and interpersonal spheres of functioning." --Readings: A Journal of Reviews and Commentary in Mental Health "This book is filled with useful information on a subject often left unaddressed. I recommend this book to clinicians who treat males who have been sexually abused and to anyone else concerned with this subject." --Family Violence Bulletin "An excellent sourcebook for those dealing with the rehabilitation of abused male children and, possibly, male abusers. . . . Males at Risk is a sensitive but heavy look at sexual abuse of the male child, following through treatment/therapy to recovery." --Paediatric Nursing "Males at Risk is a welcome addition to the relatively small existing literature which addresses the difficulties faced by abused males. . . . An important early source for those wishing to develop services for adult males abused as children, particularly in respect of addressing potential perpetration dangers." --Community Care "This book is well written and well documented. . . . A book that all practitioners, researchers, and instructors in the area of child sexual abuse will want to have on their shelves. It will prove a valuable addition to their collections." --Journal of Marriage and the Family "[The authors] describe the many possible areas in which persons can be psychologically damaged by abuse, the possible therapeutic techniques available for treatment, the available tests and inventories for assessing the victim's functioning, prioritization of problem areas, and development of a treatment plan...will certainly be useful for practitioners dealing with sexual abuse victims of either sex. The book is quite good." --Contemporary Sociology "An excellent book. It provides a thoughtful discussion of what is known about sexual abuse of males and gives detailed information about assessment techniques and treatment strategies. I recommend it to anyone who works with male incest victims." --Issues in Child Abuse Accusations "An intelligent and worthwhile effort on the part of the authors to bring together several scarce and often conflicting sources of information. It offers a practical and meaningful source of information for clinicians and researchers who are seeking a comprehensive perspective on sexual molestation as it applies to males. It further serves to identify boys and men as victims in need of special attention in the process of assessment and intervention. For clinicians who treat sexually abused boys and/or adult male survivors of childhood sexual abuse, this book should be an important resource." --Journal of Interpersonal Violence "In this scholarly but readable text geared towards the professional, the emphasis is upon the young male at risk, the manner in which potentially hazardous situations arise, and what to do about it." --Child and Family Behavior Therapy "An important addition to the treating therapist's library. . .will help therapists help violated children heal." --Contemporary Psychology "I heartily recommend this book, not simply to therapists who specialize in treating ongoing child abuse survivors, but to all clinicians who work with males. This book reminds therapists to stay alert for the signs of abuse, provides a framework to assess for abuse, and offers a complete model to treat when abuse is discovered." --Resource Reviews "Thanks to Bolton, Morris, and MacEacheron for a document that will serve helpers of every stripe well. More important, it will serve the children." --The Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Review "Highly recommended." --Family Violence & Sexual Assault Bulletin Book Club
The Mystery of John Colter

The Mystery of John Colter

From the first account of “Colter’s Run,” published in 1810, fascination with John Colter, one of America’s most famous and yet least known frontiersmen and discoverer of Yellowstone Park, has never waned. Unlike other legends of the era like Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, and Kit Carson, Colter has remained elusive because he left not a single letter, diary, or reminiscence. Gathering the available evidence and guiding readers through a labyrinth of hearsay, rumor, and myth, two Colter experts for the first time tell the whole story of Colter and his legend.

From 1810, when a newspaper published the first account of “Colter’s Run,” to 2012, when one hundred and fourscore participants in Montana’s annual John Colter Run charged up and down rugged trails—even across the waist-deep Gallatin River—interest in Colter, the alleged discoverer of Yellowstone Park, has never waned. Drawing on this endless fascination with an individual often called the first American mountain man, this book offers an innovative, comprehensive study of a unique figure in American history. Despite his prominent role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the early exploration of the West, Colter is distinctly different from Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, Kit Carson, and the other legends of the era because they all left documents behind that allow access to the men themselves. Colter, by contrast, left nothing, not a single letter, diary, or reminiscence, so that second-, third-, or fourth-hand accounts of his adventures are all we have. Guiding readers through this labyrinth of hearsay, rumor, and myth, this is the first book to tell the whole story of Colter and his legend, examining everything that is known—or supposedly known—about Colter and showing how historians and history buffs alike have tried in vain to get back to Colter the man, know what he said and feel what he felt, but have ended up never seeing him clearly, finding instead an enigma they cannot unravel.
Debating China's Exchange Rate Policy

Debating China's Exchange Rate Policy

Morris Goldstein; Nicholas Lardy

The Peterson Institute for International Economics
2008
nidottu
More than two and a half years have passed since China announced a number of changes to its foreign exchange regime in July 2005. During this period, the debate on the pros and cons of China's exchange rate policy, which had begun in earnest several years earlier, intensified. This important new book, based on an Institute conference in October 2007, takes stock of exchange rate policy in China and identifies the major policy options going forward. Specific proposals presented in the volume address how best to eliminate any misalignment of the renminbi; how best to reduce pressures emanating from the sterilization of large reserve accumulation; how best to make capital flows the ally-not the enemy-of exchange rate policy; and what institutional arrangements and policy guidelines to put in place to reap the greatest benefits from management of China's large foreign exchange reserves. Leading experts-including three from China-have contributed to the volume. The keynote address by Wu Xiaoling, deputy governor to the People's Bank of China at the time of the conference, is also presented in the book.
