What is 'Arab' about Arab subcultures? This is the first book to set out to delineate different ways of studying and theorising Arab subcultural groups and practices, including film, graffiti, music, live art performances, Arab techies and youth cultures. Contributors tackle a number of questions including: How is the study of Arab subcultures to be theorised? How are we to analyse such creative processes in a new worldliness characterised by trans-temporality and trans-subjectivity? Arab Subcultures effectively opens up a critical and interdisciplinary dialogue about Arab subcultures with different fields of enquiry, including anthropology, philosophy, art criticism and cultural studies, at the heart of which lies the key intellectual task of re-imagining the uneasy relation between aesthetics and politics in the age of revolutions.

Loyal Enemies: British Converts to Islam, 1850-1950

Jamie Gilham

Oxford University Press, USA
2014

Loyal Enemies uncovers the history of the earliest British converts to Islam who lived their lives freely as Muslims on British soil, from the 1850s to the 1950s. Drawing on original archival research, it reveals that people from across the range of social classes defied convention by choosing Islam in this period. Through a series of case studies of influential converts and pioneering Muslim communities, Loyal Enemies considers how the culture of Empire and imperialism influenced and affected their conversions and subsequent lives, before examining how they adapted and sustained their faith. Jamie Gilham shows that, although the overall number of converts was small, conversion to Islam aroused hostile reactions locally and nationally. He therefore also probes the roots of antipathy towards Islam and Muslims, identifies their manifestations and explores what conversion entailed socially and culturally. He also considers whether there was any substance to persistent allegations that converts had "divided" loyalties between the British Crown and a Muslim ruler, country or community. Loyal Enemies is a book about the past, but its core themes--about faith and belief, identity, Empire, loyalties and discrimination-- are still salient today.
Loyal Soldiers in the Cocaine Kingdom

Loyal Soldiers in the Cocaine Kingdom

Alfred Molano

Columbia University Press

Loyal Soldiers in the Cocaine Kingdom opens a window on a rarely glimpsed world: the couriers who transport drugs from Colombia into the United States and Europe. Written by one of Colombia's leading writers, the book lets English-speaking readers get a good look-for the first time-at the people behind the drug trade. Colombians from many different backgrounds and parts of the country tell the story of how they got involved in smuggling and how some of them managed to get out alive. This book is about the predicament in which ordinary Colombians find themselves, forced to find a way out of poverty in the middle of an unending civil war. Based on Alfred Molano's visits to Spanish and Latin American jails, Loyal Soldiers in the Cocaine Kingdom combines the gut-wrenching honesty of testimonial literature with the passionate storytelling we have come to expect from Latin America. In his native Colombia Molano has been compared to Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and indeed the many layered narratives in this book resemble harrowing fictions.

The underground Macedonian Revolutionary Organization recruited and mobilized over 20,000 supporters to take up arms against the Ottoman Empire between 1893 and 1903. Challenging conventional wisdom about the role of ethnic and national identity in Balkan history, Keith Brown focuses on social and cultural mechanisms of loyalty to describe the circuits of trust and terror—webs of secret communications and bonds of solidarity—that linked migrant workers, remote villagers, and their leaders in common cause. Loyalties were covertly created and maintained through acts of oath-taking, record-keeping, arms-trading, and in the use and management of deadly violence.

The daughter of Henry IV of France, Princess Henrietta Maria, becomes a pawn in a political strategy to stabilize relations between two countries when her father marries her to Charles I of England. Sent abroad, she finds herself living in a Protestant country that views her own faith--Catholicism--with deep suspicion. Yet her new husband is a man of principle and integrity, and Henrietta and Charles fall deeply in love. Henrietta is passionate about her faith, however, and soon politically powerful people, namely Oliver Cromwell and his Puritans, turn her loyalty to her religion into a focal point for civil war. As the royal couple watch the fall of Thomas Wentworth, first Earl of Strafford, the rise of Puritanism, and Englishmen fight Englishmen, they are undeterred in their dedication to each other and in their belief in the divine rights of king and queen--even as spies lurk in their very own household. Loyal in Love offers an inside look at an unforgettable time in England's history and at the life of a queen whose story of devotion and bravery has gone untold for too long.

When everyone else leaves, Jesus stays. When all fails, Jesus remains.Rejection is inevitable. Yet we spend little time considering the significant impact it makes on an individual's whole self. When we do, we swaddle it in quippy statements and shallow encouragement--meaningful for just a moment. But rejection--like abandonment, betrayal, and estrangement--leaves aching wounds that challenge and forge our most intimate thoughts of who we believe God, others, and ourselves to be.In Loyal in His Love, Tabitha Panariso blends biblical truth, candid personal stories, and timeless wisdom forged through personal experience and her vocation as a therapist to invite readers into a new way of living. The heart that suffers rejection can't be cured. It must be resuscitated. Its condition warrants more than just platitudes--it merits the full attention of a loyal and loving God.This isn't just another Christian self-help book. Though Tabitha makes ample room for the hurting to process their own stories, points them to God's faithfulness, and challenges the way they think--she doesn't stop there. Jesus lived a life and death marked by rejection. Yet we remember Him for His compassion and generosity. He was and is proof that we could be remembered that way too. Thus, Tabitha guides readers through the life and death of Jesus as a means of counter-cultural response to the pain of rejection.Loyal in His Love ends squarely on the triumph of Christ's resurrection--not just as an antidote but a daily supplement. His restoration is ours--alive and active in our hearts, bodies, and lives. Each devastating moment of rejection is an opportunity to build bridges that will lead us into and through living hope and transformation.
