Umlaut Phenomena in Early New High German Discourse

semantic and discourse considerations. "Umlaut Phenomena in Early New High German Discourse" is an investigation of the spread and regularization of umlaut in Early New High German that focuses on semantic and pragmatic influences. In a detailed analysis of excerpts from three texts - Brant's "Narrenschiff," von Tepl's "Ackermann von Bohmen," and Luther's "Sendbrief vom Dolmetschen" - lexical items displaying variation in umlaut spelling are compared in an attempt to isolate discourse factors that influenced the choice of each variant. This work differs from other studies on umlaut in that, on the basis of evidence from these Early New High German texts, it postulates that the development of umlaut was not only a phonological matter, but was in fact significantly influenced by semantic and discourse considerations."
First published in 1948, Lee Allen's history of the Reds, like Franklin Lewis's history of the Cleveland Indians, was originally published by G. P. Putnam's Sons. Allen narrates the historic organization's success, beginning shortly after the Civil War with baseball's rising popularity among Cincinnati's elite. Eventually, as interest increased, America's first professional baseball team was established in 1868 - Cincinnati's Red Stockings. ""The Cincinnati Reds"" chronicles each season from the organization's early years, most notably the 1882 American Association pennant and the 1919 and 1940 National League pennants, and World Series championships, including the infamous Chicago White Sox scandal. Allen retells many of the early Reds stories likely forgotten or unknown by today's fans. This book is as thorough as it is absorbing, and will be enjoyed by those interested in the early days of America's favourite passtime.

“This book is well paced, factual... and is a really good read, especially for those unfamiliar with the ‘war’ in the first place.” - Scale Military Modeller International, June 2009“A detailed and exciting account of incidents in the 1987-8 tanker war in the Gulf.” -The Naval Review, November 2008In May 1987 the US guided missile frigate Stark, sailing the waters of the Persian Gulf, was suddenly blown apart by an Exocet missile fired by a MiG of Iraq’s Saddam Hussein. A fifth of the ship’s crew were killed and many others wounded. This event jump-started one of the most mysterious conflicts in American history, the Tanker War, which was waged for control of the Middle East’s oil supply, and was carried out in the shadow of the Iran-Iraq War.Losing on the battlefield, Ayatollah Khomeini’s Iran had decided to close the Persian Gulf against shipments from Iraq, and especially from their oil-rich backers, the emirate of Kuwait. The Kuwaitis appealed for international help to protect their tankers, and the Soviet Union was first to respond. This prompted America to react and send their own fleet to the Gulf, raising the Stars and Stripes over Kuwait’s commercial tankers. The result was a free-for-all, as the Iranians laid mines throughout the passage and launched their torpedo attacks. The Tanker War was the US Navy’s largest surface battle since World War II.

In the Devil's Garden: A Sinful History of Forbidden Food
Stewart Lee Allen

Deliciously organized by the Seven Deadly Sins, here is a scintillating history of forbidden foods through the ages--and how these mouth-watering taboos have defined cultures around the world. From the lusciously tempting fruit in the Garden of Eden to the divine foie gras, Stewart Lee Allen engagingly illustrates that when a pleasure as primal as eating is criminalized, there is often an astonishing tale to tell. Among the foods thought to encourage Lust, the love apple (now known as the tomato) was thought to possess demonic spirits until the nineteenth century. The Gluttony "course" invites the reader to an ancient Roman dinner party where nearly every dish served--from poppy-crusted rodents to "Trojan Pork"--was considered a crime against the state. While the vice known as Sloth introduces the sad story of "The Lazy Root" (the potato), whose popularity in Ireland led British moralists to claim that the Great Famine was God's way of punishing the Irish for eating a food that bred degeneracy and idleness. Filled with incredible food history and the author's travels to many of these exotic locales, In the Devil's Garden also features recipes like the matzo-ball stews outlawed by the Spanish Inquisition and the forbidden "chocolate champagnes" of the Aztecs. This is truly a delectable book that will be consumed by food lovers, culinary historians, amateur anthropologists, and armchair travelers alike. Bon app tit
