The late Renaissance sculptor Leone Leoni (1509-1590) came from modest beginnings, but died as a nobleman and knight. His remarkable leap in status from his humble birth to a stonemason's family, to his time as a galley slave, to living as a nobleman and courtier in Milan provide a specific case study of an artist's struggle and triumph over existing social structures that marginalized the Renaissance artist. Based on a wealth of discoveries in archival documents, correspondence, and contemporary literature, the author examines the strategies Leoni employed to achieve his high social position, such as the friendships he formed, the type of education he sought out, the artistic imagery he employed, and the aristocratic trappings he donned. Leoni's multiple roles (imperial sculptor, aristocrat, man of erudition, and criminal), the visual manifestations of these roles in his house, collection, and tomb, the form and meaning of the artistic commissions he undertook, and the particular successes he enjoyed are here situated within the complex political, social and economic contexts of northern Italy and the Spanish court in the sixteenth century.

Apr s une fuite romanesque avec des tapes dans d'obscurs refuges, les deux amants v curent six mois d'un bonheur bucolique dans un chalet de montagne. Mais l'hiver venant, ils furent contraints de regagner la civilisation, et plus particuli rement Venise. Ils s'install rent dans un somptueux appartement ayant appartenu la famille de Leoni. Ce dernier y re ut, de plus en plus fr quemment, de vieilles connaissances avec lesquels il s'adonnait au plaisir du jeu. Juliette regretta rapidement leur intimit de la montagne. Elle tait, de plus, effray e en s'apercevant que les amis de Leoni n'avaient aucun respect pour elle. L'un deux, le Vicomte de Chalm, tait persuad que Leoni abandonnerait bient t Juliette et qu'il pourrait la r cup rer pour le compte d'un certain Lord Edward. En effet, Leoni partit brusquement pour Milan, sans aucune explication, apr s avoir promis de revenir bient t. Le Vicomte de Chalm affirma Juliette que Leoni l'avait abandonn e et qu'il serait pr f rable qu'elle se mette sous la protection de Lord Edward. La jeune femme s'enfuit et se rendit Milan. Elle s'expliqua franchement avec Leoni, lui disant que s'il ne voulait plus d'elle, elle pouvait retourner aupr s de sa famille. Mais Leoni voulait garder Juliette sous sa coupe. Il la contraignit se lier d'amiti avec la Princesse Zagarolo, sa ma tresse de Milan. La princesse tant mourante, Leoni esp rait devenir son h ritier. Juliette accepta par amour. Dans le sillage de Leoni revint bient t un de ces vieux complices, un homme n faste, le Marquis de... Ce dernier tua la Princesse Zagarolo afin que Leoni touche son h ritage plus rapidement. Il limina galement un ami de Juliette, Henryet. Ce dernier avait d couvert que Leoni tait le voleur des bijoux. Leoni subit ensuite le chantage du Marquis et se retrouva ruin . Juliette le soutint toujours, jusqu'au moment o Leoni tenta de la vendre Lord Edward. Elle se jeta par la fen tre. Leoni s'enfuit. A la fin de son r cit, Juliette semble soulag e. Elle laisse esp rer Aleo en leur avenir commun. Mais lors d'une promenade en gondole, Juliette retrouve Leoni et le suit sans h sitation. Furieux, Aleo emploie un stratag me pour attirer Leoni dans un endroit d sert, la tomb e de la nuit. Il est surpris de constater que son rival est un l che alors qu'on lui avait vant ses prouesses physiques. Il le tue quand m me mais avec un arri re go t amer. En revenant Venise, Bustamente aper oit Juliette sur une p niche avec un homme qu'on lui affirme tre Leoni. Aleo se rend compte de son erreur: il a tu le Marquis, lib rant ainsi Leoni de son mauvais g nie
