Insect-Plant Biology

Insect-Plant Biology

Louis M. Schoonhoven; Joop J. A. van Loon; Marcel Dicke

Oxford University Press
2005
sidottu
Half of all insect species are dependent on living plant tissues, consuming about 10 per cent of plant annual production in natural habitats and an even greater percentage in agricultural systems, despite sophisticated control measures. Plants possess defences that are effective against almost all herbivorous insect species. Host-plant specialization, observed in over 80 percent of these animals, appears to be an effective adaptation to breach these defence systems. The mechanisms underlying plant defence to invading herbivores on the one side, and insect adaptations to utilize plants for nutrition, defence and shelter on the other, are the main subjects of this book. For plants exposed to insect herbivores, these mechanisms include the activation of defence systems and the emission of chemical signals which may attract natural enemies of the invading herbivores and may even be exploited by neighbouring plants to induce an early defence.

Plants possess defences that are effective against almost all herbivorous insect species. Host-plant specialization, observed in over 80% of these animals, appears to be an effective adaptation to breach these defence systems. The mechanisms underlying plant defence to invading herbivores on the one side, and insect adaptations to utilize plants for nutrition, defence and shelter on the other, are the main subjects of this book. In the case of plants exposed to insect herbivores, they include the activation of defence systems in order to minimize damage, as well as the emission of chemical signals that may attract natural enemies of the invading herbivores and may be exploited by neighbouring plants that mount defences as well. For insects, they include complex bevioural adaptations and their underlying sensory systems (with their implications for learning and nutritional plasticity), as well as the endocrinological aspects of life cycle synchronization with host-plant phenology. Insect-Plant Biology discusses the operation of these mechanisms at the molecular and organismal levels and explicitly puts these in the context of both ecological interactions and evolutionary processes. In doing so, it uncovers the highly intricate antagonistic as well as mutualistic interactions that have evolved between plants and insects. The book concludes with a chapter on the application of our knowledge of insect-plant interactions to agricultural production. This multidisciplinary approach will appeal to students in biology, agricultural entomology, ecology, and indeed anyone interested in the principles underlying the relationships between the two largest groups of organisms on earth: plants and insects.
The Morality of Embryo Use

The Morality of Embryo Use

Louis M. Guenin

Cambridge University Press
2008
sidottu
Is it permissible to use a human embryo in stem cell research, or in general as a means for benefit of others? Acknowledging each embryo as an object of moral concern, Louis M.Guenin argues that it is morally permissible to decline intrauterine transfer of an embryo formed outside the body, and that from this permission and the duty of beneficence, there follows a consensus justification for using donated embryos in service of humanitarian ends. He then proceeds to show how this justification commands assent even within moral and religious views commonly thought to oppose embryo use. Beneath his moral reasoning lies a carefully constructed metaphysical foundation incorporating accounts of the ontology of development, embryos, and species. He also incisively discusses nonreprocloning, reprocloning, ectogenesis, and related scientific frontiers. This compelling philosophical study will interest all concerned to understand virtue and obligation in the relief of suffering.

Louis M. Greenberg

Although the Paris Commune of 1871 has been the subject of voluminous writing, especially on the place of the uprising in the development of socialist thought and practice, little was previously done on provincial communal movements. First published in 1971, this book offers an exploration of the insurrection as part of the nationwide struggle for municipal and departmental liberties, bringing to the fore the Commune's relationship to the broader historical problem of the consolidation and future character of the Third Republic, especially in the provinces. Greenberg thus sees the event as part of a long developing effort to decentralize political power in France.
Teilhard de Chardin—The Divine Milieu Explained

Teilhard de Chardin—The Divine Milieu Explained

Louis M. Savary

During the 20th century, Jesuit priest Teilhard de Chardin developed a truly revolutionary spirituality based on the discoveries of science and a comprehensive evolutionary perspective—a perspective never conceived of before by traditional spiritual writers. Through his integration of science and faith, Teilhard offered us a new way to understand the Word of God. In Teilhard de Chardin--The Divine Milieu Explained, author Louis M. Savary sets forth a series of revolutionary spiritual practices that integrate science and faith, based on the evolutionary spirituality of Teilhard’s pathbreaking work, The Divine Milieu. As a result, this volume: • makes accessible to a wide audience the ideas of Teilhard’s spirituality • explains principles of Teilhard’s scientific thought not explicitly formulated in The Divine Milieu • shows that Teilhard’s theology and spirituality are fully compatible with classical Christian theology • suggests many simple reflections or spiritual practices to help put Teilhard’s spirituality directly into daily life Teilhard never spelled out for us how to practice this new understanding in our daily lives. And until we can practice it, this new transformative spirituality, remains simply a collection of revolutionary ideas about God that we can only talk about. Having taught and practiced Teilhardian ideas for almost forty years, author Louis M. Savary offers this work as a first step toward establishing new spiritual practices that translate Teilhard’s ideas into action. It shows how to both think about one’s faith and live it in light of evolutionary science. †

For all practical purposes, the last comprehensive revolutionary advance in spirituality and spiritual practice for prayerful Christians was Ignatius Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises in the 16th century. Most devout Christians today are using many of the same spiritual practices today. During the 20th century, Jesuit priest Teilhard de Chardin developed a truly revolutionary spirituality integrating into it the discoveries of science and a comprehensive evolutionary perspective—a perspective never conceived of before by traditional spiritual writers. Through his integration of science and faith, Teilhard offered us a new way to understand the Word of God and the immensity of the universal Christ. This book presents a spiritual renewal system for contemporary believers based on Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises and inspired by the modern insights of Jesuit priest-scientist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. This innovative book is a must for courses on Teilhard's spirituality and thought, traditional or contemporary spirituality, or Ignatius's Spiritual Exercises, devotees of Teilhard and/or the Spiritual Exercises, and those who give retreats. †

Lou Savary and Patricia Byrne have provided a valuable contribution in this book by clearly explaining Teilhard’s doctrine of love on every level of life, from God to friendship, marriage, parenting, and human community. Their book is less a scholarly exposition on a Teilhardian doctrine of love than a masterful illumination of love as the core energy of evolving life. Each chapter clearly explains Teilhard’s insights and then provides practical ways of incorporating these ideas into daily life. †

At the end of the epilogue to The Human Phenomenon, Teilhard's great scientific treatise, he added a section entitled "The Christian Phenomenon." He insists that he writes these pages as a scientist, working from tangible, observable, historical facts (phenomena) about the beginnings, growth, and development of Christianity, which he sees as essential to understanding recent evolution in the "human phenomenon."In this, his latest installment in his project to make the thought of Teilhard de Chardin more accessible to the average reader, author Louis Savary explores topics that cry for fuller development and clarification in Teilhard's thought about the phenomenon of Christianity and the future. He includes the role of evil, pain and suffering in fostering evolution, the value and role of matter vis-à-vis spirit in future evolution, and the distinction between God and the created world. We have been part of a continually evolving religion since its beginnings. Our challenge is to think and act like evolving believers.Louis M. Savary, PhD, STD, holds two doctorates, one in mathematical statistics and another in theology. He was a Jesuit for thirty years and for the past forty years has been promoting Teilhard's ideas for the ordinary person. He is author of many books, including "The Divine Milieu" Explained and The New Spiritual Exercises in the Spirit of Teilhard de Chardin (both from Paulist Press).†
