Bargo Lynden, Blacksmith-turned wizard embarks on a journey to destroy evil at its source by killing the evil sorcerer Garlock on Bereuka Island. He is assisted by his mentor, Galong, his cousin, Captain Joe Garkee, and his good friend, Barton. They enlist the help of the Shudolin Naval forces, who provide them with ten ships to sail to the faraway lands. They face giant birds, bats, and insects, treacherous weather, giant whirlpools, sea monsters, and even mermaids in their task. At home, King Glam and the Shudolin are faced with a new threat, when Phillip's half-sister, Camilla, invades the castle with an army of Grassmen. Ang, believed dead, resurfaces, as well, forming a pact with her and King Glazar, leader of the Licarions. With just Lilly, Bargo's cousin, and a town full of Woblos, they do their best to defend their homeland, but must eventually ask for the help of the Elven Kingdom to defeat the invading forces. Bargo Lynden must fight to quell the conflict in the land and eliminate the source of Garlock's and Ang's power. Join this second part of this mystical adventure of religion, magic, faith, romance, and a Woblo's decision whether to give up the wizardry, and become human as his kind once was, or remain the most powerful creature in Elven history.

The Holy Household

The Holy Household

Lyndal Roper

Clarendon Press

This is a fascinating study of the impact of the Reformation idea of `civic righteousness' on the position of women in Augsburg. Lyndal Roper argues that its development, both as a religious credo and as a social movement, must be understood in terms of gender. Until now the effects of the Reformation on women have been regarded as largely beneficial: this book argues that such a view of the Reformation's legacy is a profound misreading, and that the status of women was, in fact, worsened. The Holy Household is the first scholarly account of how the Reformation affected half of society. It greatly advances our understanding of the Reformation, of feminist history, and of the place of women in European society.

Witch Craze

Witch Craze

Lyndal Roper

Yale University Press
2006
pokkari
A powerful account of witches, crones, and the societies that make them From the gruesome ogress in Hansel and Gretel to the hags at the sabbath in Faust, the witch has been a powerful figure of the Western imagination. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries thousands of women confessed to being witches—of making pacts with the Devil, causing babies to sicken, and killing animals and crops—and were put to death. This book is a gripping account of the pursuit, interrogation, torture, and burning of witches during this period and beyond. Drawing on hundreds of original trial transcripts and other rare sources in four areas of Southern Germany, where most of the witches were executed, Lyndal Roper paints a vivid picture of their lives, families, and tribulations. She also explores the psychology of witch-hunting, explaining why it was mostly older women that were the victims of witch crazes, why they confessed to crimes, and how the depiction of witches in art and literature has influenced the characterization of elderly women in our own culture.
Devi Mahatmyam – the Glory of the Goddess

Devi Mahatmyam – the Glory of the Goddess

As you read this Devi Mahatmyam, you will feel the joy, the power and the wonder of the Divine Mother. At its simplest level, the Devi Mahatmyam is the battle between good and evil. But on that battlefield, the majesty of the Mother Goddess should not be underestimated. She does not wage wars with the aid of grand armies or divine allies. She alone is the source and the strength. In a new translation of this sacred text, Lyndal Vercoe offers a direct and devotional rendering. This is not just a description of Divine Power. It is a worship and a praise of God as the Mother of the Universe. Say those words to yourself and feel their meaning: the Mother of the Universe. This is not just a historical text. This is a prayer to be read aloud. It is an epic poem, a true song of praise that should echo through the days of our lives. Listen carefully and you will feel the spirit within. This is a Devi Mahatmyam for our time.

Parks, Plants, and People

Lynden B. Miller

An internationally renowned public garden designer, with 27 years’ experience and an artist’s eye, Lynden Miller has changed the face of New York City’s public places by providing a connection with nature for neighborhoods, rich and poor. Parks, Plants and People describes the elements of successful public space and tells how to design, improve and maintain year-round plantings, how to advocate for increased public funding and how to attract private dollars. She calls on the general public, gardeners, urban designers, architects, landscape architects and public officials—everyone who cares about the quality of life in urban areas—to create and support well-planted parks and gardens as essential urban oases that reduce crime and have positive effects on the economic welfare of cities and their citizens. Miller demonstrates the power of plants to soften and civilize public life and proves that beautiful public spaces, planted and maintained to high standards, have the power to transform the way people behave and feel about their cities. Her motto is: Make it gorgeous and they will come. Keep it that way and they will help.
