Curious about George

Curious about George

Rae Lynn Schwartz-DuPre

University Press of Mississippi

In 1940, Hans Augusto Rey and Margret Rey built two bikes, packed what they could, and fled wartime Paris. Among the possessions they escaped with was a manuscript that would later become one of the most celebrated books in children’s literature—Curious George. Since his debut in 1941, the mischievous icon has only grown in popularity. After being captured in Africa by the Man in the Yellow Hat and taken to live in the big city’s zoo, Curious George became a symbol of curiosity, adventure, and exploration. In Curious about George: Curious George, Cultural Icons, Colonialism, and US Exceptionalism, author Rae Lynn Schwartz-DuPre argues that the beloved character also performs within a narrative of racism, colonialism, and heroism. Using theories of colonial and rhetorical studies to explain why cultural icons like Curious George are able to avoid criticism, Schwartz-DuPre investigates the ways these characters operate as capacious figures, embodying and circulating the narratives that construct them, and effectively argues that discourses about George provide a rich training ground for children to learn US citizenship and become innocent supporters of colonial American exceptionalism. By drawing on postcolonial theory, children’s criticisms, science and technology studies, and nostalgia, Schwartz-DuPre’s critical reading explains the dismissal of the monkey’s 1941 abduction from Africa and enslavement in the US, described in the first book, by illuminating two powerful roles he currently holds: essential STEM ambassador at a time when science and technology is central to global competitiveness and as a World War II refugee who offers a "deficient" version of the Holocaust while performing model US immigrant. Curious George’s twin heroic roles highlight racist science and an Americanized Holocaust narrative. By situating George as a representation of enslaved Africans and Holocaust refugees, Curious about George illuminates the danger of contemporary zero-sum identity politics, the colonization of marginalized identities, and racist knowledge production. Importantly, it demonstrates the ways in which popular culture can be harnessed both to promote colonial benevolence and to present possibilities for resistance.

In the year of 1825, Claude Fo'Rae is a rich self-entitled, sadistic plantation owner with an unquenchable thirst for teenage girls. His plot to inflict pain on the warrior who disagreed with him leads him to kidnap an innocent young girl from the shores of Sierra Leone. He renames that young girl Hattie Mae and makes her life a living hell. He becomes obsessed with her beauty. Soon he realizes that Hattie Mae would never conform to being an ordinary slave. Little did he know the fate that awaited him. His first mistake was not acknowledging and respecting the fact that Hattie Mae comes from a long heritage of powerful Voodoo Priestesses. After hacking Claude Fo'Rae to pieces for brutally assaulting their daughter, Hattie Mae gains an unlikely ally in The Mistress of the House, Mattie. Mistress Mattie and Hattie Mae develop a dysfunctional sisterhood, and the adventure begins when Mistress Mattie helps Hattie Mae escape from the Plantation in Louisiana to the coast of Saint Lucia. Over the years, Hattie Mae is respectfully referred to as Madame Fo'Rae the Voodoo Queen. This story is full of mystery such as the unexplainable psychic ability Hattie Mae and her daughter Savannah seem to possess, the hidden truth about Claude Fo'Rae's brother Collin Fo'Rae, the scandalous behavior between Mistress Mattie and Hattie Mae's husband a slave named Robert Lee, to the mysterious DeMarco whom the people refer to as a soulless being. What secrets could they be hiding? Is there any truth to these magical powers? House of Fo'Rae is sure to be a suspenseful page-turner

Includes CD-Rom For many teachers, gender issues related to role models, image and expectations have an effect upon the behaviour and achievement of both boys and girls, often to their disadvantage. This innovative and practical resource, for teachers of students aged 5-13 provides: o a programme to promote gender equality and inclusivity in schools and colleges o a rationale for the programme based on social justice o a practical set of classroom activities to implement the programme The book combines the talents and commitment of two leading authors to provide an 'action inquiry' methodology - engaging students and staff in the processes of investigating what is currently happening, and planning, implementing and reviewing improvements. This contributes to the development of the school as a self-evaluating organisation, which listens to the voice of the child. The programme supports teachers and other school staff in developing as reflective practitioners, and children and young people in developing as reflective learners. It can also be used to engage schools and colleges in joining the UNICEF 'Rights Respecting' programme which is demonstrating positive results. 'A real strength of the resource is the inclusion of practical activities that have been carefully designed for pupils. These are excellent and lend themselves for use in a variety of ways. This is a thoroughly recommended resource.' - SENCO Update

This volume of the Yale Series of Younger Poets explores love, grief, the opioid epidemic, and coming of age “Elegiac and witty.”—Elisa Gabbert, New York Times, “The Best Poetry of 2022” “These poems name the hurt wrought upon the meek that makes the elegy, here, as much an exaltation of the living as a mournful dirge for the land.”—Major Jackson, Vanderbilt University The 116th volume of the Yale Series of Younger Poets, Robert Wood Lynn’s collection of poems explores the tensions of youth and the saturation points of knowledge: those moments when the acquisition of understanding overlaps with regret and becomes a desire to know less. Comprising poems of place set across the Virginias, this collection includes an episodic elegy exploring the opioid crisis in the Shenandoah Valley as well as a separate series of persona poems reimagining the Mothman (West Virginia’s famed cryptid) reluctantly coming of age in that state’s mountains and struggling with the utility of warnings. These are narrative poems of love and grief, built from a storytelling tradition. Taken together they form an arc encompassing the experience of growing up, looking away, and looking back.
