Dante's Divine Comedy is widely considered to be one of the most significant works of literature ever written. It is renowned not only for its ability to make truths known but also for its power to make them loved. It captures centuries of thought on sin, love, community, moral living, God's work in history, and God's ineffable beauty. Like a Gothic cathedral, the beauty of this great poem can be appreciated at first glance, but only with a guide can its complexity and layers of meaning be fully comprehended. This accessible introduction to Dante, which also serves as a primer to the Divine Comedy, helps readers better appreciate and understand Dante's spiritual masterpiece. Jason Baxter, an expert on Dante, covers all the basic themes of the Divine Comedy, such as sin, redemption, virtue, and vice. The book contains a general introduction to Dante and a specific introduction to each canticle (Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso), making it especially well suited for classroom and homeschool use.

Perfect for use as a quick reference, this book provides straightforward access to the essentials of equine lameness, including the clinical assessment of the horse and commonly performed diagnostic nerve blocks and the most common conditions of the foot, forelimb, and hindlimb that may be contributing to the lameness. Current therapeutic options to treat lameness are also discussed, as well as guidance on how to manage musculoskeletal emergencies. The content has been distilled from the authoritative Seventh Edition of Adams and Stashak’s Lameness in Horses, and this new edition has been re-envisioned to be even quicker and easier to navigate than the previous version. Color photographs and illustrations support the text, which presents lameness information most relevant to equine general practitioners, mixed animal practitioners, and veterinary students. A companion website offers videos that focus on the clinical examination of the horse and select diagnostic blocks and relevant anatomy. Diagnostic and treatment material has been revised from the previous edition to include the most up-to-date information. Readers will find: A thorough introduction to the assessment of the lame horse, including history, visual exam, palpation, subjective and objective assessments of lameness, perineural anesthesia, and intrasynovial anesthesiaAn exploration of common conditions of the foot, including the navicular region and soft tissue injuries, coffin joint and distal phalanx conditions, and laminitis Discussions of the most common conditions of the forelimb, including the pastern, fetlock, metacarpus/metatarsus, carpus, antebrachium, elbow, and humerus, as well as the shoulder and scapulaDiscussions of common conditions of the hindlimb and axial skeletonA review of therapeutic options to treat lameness conditionsHow to manage musculoskeletal emergencies in the horse Ideal for veterinary students, early career equine practitioners, and mixed animal veterinarians, the Second Edition of Manual of Equine Lameness is an indispensable reference for any veterinarian seeking a concise one-stop reference for equine lameness.
The Medieval Mind of C. S. Lewis – How Great Books Shaped a Great Mind
C. S. Lewis had one of the great minds of the twentieth century. Many readers know Lewis as an author of fiction and fantasy literature, including the Chronicles of Narnia and the Space Trilogy. Others know him for his books in apologetics, including Mere Christianity and The Problem of Pain. But few know him for his scholarly work as a professor of medieval and Renaissance literature. What shaped the mind of this great thinker? Jason Baxter argues that Lewis was deeply formed not only by the words of Scripture and his love of ancient mythology, but also by medieval literature. For this undeniably modern Christian, authors like Dante and Boethius provided a worldview that was relevant to the challenges of the contemporary world. Here, readers will encounter an unknown figure to guide them in their own journey: C. S. Lewis the medievalist.

This book proposes a radically new interpretation of the Comedy’s encyclopedism by focusing on Dante’s work in light of the medieval imago mundi tradition. The work opens with a discussion of how the Florentine poet transgressed every generic boundary in his effort to gather «into one volume» a vast and varied set of creatures, places, landscapes, historical and mythological persons, weather conditions, and arts. It then goes on to show that this extraordinary encyclopedic breadth should be understood in the terms of Boethian and Augustinian spiritual exercises of envisioning the whole world in the mind’s eye, which themselves became the interpretive framework for the spiritual ends behind medieval encyclopedic texts. By bringing attention to Latin Platonism and twelfth-century authors (such as Alan of Lille, Bernard Silvestris, William of Conches, Hugh of St. Victor, and Thierry of Chatres), this book provides compelling new readings of the De vulgari eloquentia, as well as provocative insights into key figures (such as Brunetto Latini, Pier della Vigna, and Ulysses) and key passages (Purgatorio 28, Paradiso 26, and Paradiso 33).

This collection features four peer-reviewed literature reviews on improving piglet welfare. The first chapter reviews the main welfare challenges faced during farrowing and lactation, including the occurrence of painful husbandry procedures, such as tooth resection, tail docking and castration. The chapter also highlights various mitigation strategies that can be implemented to optimise the welfare of both sows and piglets in the farrowing environment. The second chapter addresses some of the main welfare concerns that can arise during the weaning and nursery stage as a result of separation between piglet and sow and exposure to a new environment. The chapter also summarises the most important fields of environmental, nutritional and social stress and how these experiences can be mitigated with the correct strategies. The third chapter considers the demand for improved welfare and animal handling systems from governments, non-governmental organisations and consumers. The chapter reviews recent advancements in technology that have the potential to improve animal wellbeing, profitability and performance during the weaning period. The final chapter discusses the main etiological agents acting in the period of transition from weaning, the risk factors for their introduction and diffusion within the farm and the main measures available for their control.

What makes this book different from the many books on problem solving is the Decision Making Chart. It provides a quick reference to help pin point the problem and quickly identify the best method for finding a solution. The book reviews the major types of decisions and provides work sheets that help in reaching an appropriate conclusion. While the book is a quick read, the Decision Making Chart and related work sheets are handy tools when faced with difficult choices and problems. The book includes an issues clarification process to determine if the situation at hand is a choice to be made or a problem to be resolved. Information is provided on what to do when the issue cannot be resolved and how to proceed to reduce future problems. Special emphasis is placed on situations where there are only two choices. These are the most common types of decisions. The book includes many example and has a number of work sheets the reader can used in the process of making decisions and solving problems. Young adults may find ideas that will help them move ahead into the next phase of life.

The purpose of this book is to j.ir€'~ 0l'l\' a new technique for the experimental investigation of the free wave model sound field of acoustics. The technique is based on the use of spherical harmonic functions of angle. Acousticians frequently encounter random sound fields whose properties may be closely modelled by use of the "free wave" field. This model field is defined by two basic statistical properties: stationarity in time, and homogeneity in space. Stationarity means that any single order statistic measured by a microphone in the field will be independent of the time at which the recording is taken, while homogeneity means that the measurement will also be independent of the mic- phone's position in the field. Furthermore, second order statistics obtained from the measurements of two microphones will depend only on the time lapse between the two recordings, and the relative spatial separation of the micro phones, and not on the microphones' absolute positions in space and time. The free wave field may also (equivalently) be pictured as a collection of plane sound waves which approach an observation position from all angles. These are the "free waves" of the title, with no correlation between waves at different angles and frequencies, although there may exist an angle-dependant plane wave density function. This is a measure of the density of sound energy arriving from different angles. The free wave field has proved to be a simple but remarkably powerful model.

Hume's Difficulty

Hume's Difficulty

In this volume--the first, focused study of Hume on time and identity--Baxter focuses on Hume’s treatment of the concept of numerical identity, which is central to Hume's famous discussions of the external world and personal identity. Hume raises a long unappreciated, and still unresolved, difficulty with the concept of identity: how to represent something as "a medium betwixt unity and number." Superficial resemblance to Frege’s famous puzzle has kept the difficulty in the shadows. Hume’s way of addressing it makes sense only in the context of his unorthodox theory of time. Baxter shows the defensibility of that theory against past dismissive interpretations, especially of Hume’s stance on infinite divisibility. Later the author shows how the difficulty underlies Hume’s later worries about his theory of personal identity, in a new reading motivated by Hume’s important appeals to consciousness. Baxter casts Hume throughout as an acute metaphysician, and reconciles this side of Hume with his overarching Pyrrhonian skepticism.
