As digital technologies become more pervasive and powerful, they raise increasingly pressing ethical questions that need to be understood and addressed. This book provides an accessible introduction to the important field of digital ethics. It explores topical examples of ethical problems created by the technology and shows how ethical ideas and values can be used to make sense of them. It provides the readership a clear, well-researched insight into the various issues under the banner of ‘digital ethics’, including how each of these issues relates to different technologies such as AI, smartphones, and automated decision-making (to say the least). This is coupled with contemporary ideas on ameliorating ethical harm and risk, which are grounded in philosophical thought, presented in an accessible way. The book will benefit those who design and implement digital technologies and, more broadly, anyone with an interest in the compelling ethical and social issues arising from digital technologies. It carefully and clearly describes the philosophical ideas as well as technical considerations behind contemporary digital technology use, to provide the reader with a solid footing for further exploration of this rapidly expanding field.

This dialogue between Simon Macnab and Jean-Marc Mantel, is an inquiry into the profound nature of the Self, free from cultural or religious distortion. Based upon many years of spiritual research and life experience, their conversation explores the major questions of existence from a fresh and original perspective, allowing the beauty of language and the depth of silence to emerge. The themes addressed integrate ancient wisdom with modern life, weaving together the challenges of ordinary living with the extraordinariness of Consciousness, the personal involvement of the 'I' with the serene detachment of the Self. Thus is revealed how, in every moment, we are invited to awaken to the radiant splendour hidden behind the world of form. A French version of this book is also available.

The Forgotten Contribution of the Teaching Sisters

The Forgotten Contribution of the Teaching Sisters

For far too long, Catholic teaching sisters have been overlooked in the history of education. During the past twenty-five years, however, researchers have begun to explore the fundamental role played by these women in teaching children in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This essay provides the first detailed overview of the historiography of the teaching sisters in Western Europe, North America, Latin America, and Australasia, surveying scholarship since 1985. It reviews the literature on six major themes: contribution to schooling, teaching orders and schools, educational philosophy, content and practice, life and lived experience of teachers and students, the professionalization of teaching, and changes in the composition of the teaching staff . Very rich in bibliographical references, this book is indispensable for all further research on this significant but underexplored group of women teachers.

Labour, Finance and Inequality

Labour, Finance and Inequality

Following the 2008 "global" financial crisis, the viability of globalised financial capitalism was called into question. The resulting fear and uncertainty produced a momentary return to "Keynesian" policies. But as soon as emergency stimuli – and bank bail-outs – appeared to stabilise the situation, there was a sharp reversal; and successive British governments and the financial sector have since attempted to return to business as usual.Historically, much smaller shocks have been able to produce dramatic change, with the 1978 "Winter of Discontent" providing a catalyst for the election of Margaret Thatcher, the ultimate abandonment of the post-war Keynesian consensus, and the ushering-in of neoliberalism. Nor is apparent success a guarantee against change, with Winston Churchill being swept from office by the first majority Labour government in 1945 – at a point which should have marked his greatest triumph. In this book, these apparently inexplicable shifts in the conventional wisdom and the accompanying policy paradigm are explored through the lens of the interest groups that have jostled for position since the second industrial revolution. In this context, inequality, poverty, free market capitalism and the social welfare state have interacted in an uneasy, dynamic dance – the "insecurity cycle". The authors explore these interactions, their impact on the relationship between society and the economy, and the possible implications of Brexit and a re-energised political left.Written in an engaging and accessible style, Labour, Finance and Inequality will be a key resource for academics and students of social and political economics as well as public policy. It will also offer considerable insight to policy makers and a more general non-specialist audience.
