The couple dates through their first two years of college until an unfortunate accident causes Derek to lose his life. After Derek's death, Sheena's life spirals downhill at a rapid pace. Now that her boyfriend is dead, Jason Grey wants to make Sheena his wife someday. The only problem is his present girlfriend, Ruby. She has serious control issues, and she has no intentions of letting him go.Sheena begins to have nightmares about Jason being in danger. The dreams suggest that she will be the person inflicting the harm. Is Sheena suppressing the dark, evil characteristics revealed in the dream? For a century now, scholars have searched for the “source” of Marcel Proust’s startlingly innovative novel À la recherche du temps perdu. Some have pointed to Henri Bergson, Sigmund Freud, or Paul Sollier. Others have referenced the novels of Henry James. But no one has focused on the more significant influence of the writings of Henry’s older brother, the psychologist and Harvard professor William James. A close comparison reveals the degree to which Proust’s novel stems from James’s psychological and philosophical theories. William James was a prominent member of the scientific, medical and philosophical communities in Proust’s Paris and was close friends with two men well known to Proust. His works were translated into French and reviewed in French journals and newspapers. This book discloses how Proust likely became familiar with William James and illustrates how James’s writings were key to Proust’s ability to craft the book he had been trying to write, extending even to his use of similar language and imagery and a narrative schema that arguably mimics James’s descriptions of consciousness, perception, and memory. Proust’s hero assiduously explores the vague, uncertain, relational aspects of experience, the trials and comforts of habit, the salvational potential of memory, the “moral” aspects of personal history teeming with impression and desire—these are the truths of human psychology and behavior theorized by William James and made fictional flesh in Proust’s rendition of lived experience.

The three shady characters gathered in a mildewy old trailer are up to no good. Dix, Rosemary, and Johnny have been hired by someone unknown to drug Cary McCutcheon's horse before it runs the Virginia Gold Cup next October. At the party celebrating Darkling Lord's departure to Fayence Farm for special training, there's good reason for Connie Holt's unease around Rosemary, who's filling in for Cary's regular secretary while she's on vacation. An equine insurance investigator who works for Cary and his wife, Pam, Connie has grown close to Dark during the thoroughbred's time at the McCutcheon farm. But despite her misgivings about the temp, little does she suspect the criminal plot that's at hand. A richly textured exploration into the fascinating world of horse culture, the sequel to The Case of the Three Dead Horses continues to follow Connie Holt as she carries out her duties and helps the team gear up for the big steeplechase event. An old and potentially valuable oil painting by a famous equine artist and a budding romance keep her life interesting, but things really get exciting when she confronts the conspirators who are out to harm the magnificent black thoroughbred.
