Emanuel Hirschs theologischer Ansatz zeichnet sich durch das Bestreben aus, evangeliumsgemäß und zugleich den Bedingungen der Moderne verpflichtet zu sein. Anna-Maria Klassen entfaltet seine an diesem Maßstab ausgerichtete Transformation der Eschatologie, deren Thema das Verhältnis des Einzelnen zu seinem Tod ist. Hirschs Todesdeutung überzeugt, weil sie die Negativität des Todes mit dem christlichen Gottesbild verbindet. Auch der Glaubende kann sich über das Jenseits des Todes nicht sicher sein. Er steht in der unauflöslichen Spannung zwischen Vollendungsgewissheit und Todesangst. Gott wird zugleich als der Gnädige und der Richtende erfahren. Hirsch liefert mit verschiedenen Formen der Todesangst eine Phänomenologie der modernen Gerichtserfahrung. Diese ist, wie die Autorin in drei exemplarischen Skizzen zeigt, auch für die Reflexion über gegenwärtige glaubenspraktische Fragen hilfreich.

Composer, pianist, editor, writer, and pedagogue Mario Lavista (1943-2021) was a central figure of the cultural and artistic scene in Mexico and one of the leading Ibero-American composers of his generation. His music is often described as evocative and poetic, noted for his meticulous attention to timbre and motivic permutation, and his creative trajectory was characterized by its intersections with the other arts, particularly poetry and painting. Lavista was a relational composer; he did not write music as a private enterprise but for and alongside people with whom he established close relations. Understanding analysis as an affective practice, author Ana R. Alonso-Minutti explores the intertextual connections between the multiple texts--musical or otherwise--that are present in Lavista's music. Alonso-Minutti argues that, through adopting an interdisciplinary and transhistorical approach to music composition, Lavista forged a cosmopolitan imaginary that challenged stereotypes of what Mexican music should sound like. This imaginary becomes a strategy of resistance against imperialist agendas placed upon postcolonial peripheries. Departing from traditional biographical and chronological frameworks that exalt masters and masterworks, the author offers a nuanced, personal narrative informed by conversations with composers, performers, artists, choreographers, poets, writers, and filmmakers. Through an innovative mosaic of methodologies, from archival work, to musical and intertextual analysis, oral history, and (auto)ethnography, this book is the first in-depth study of Lavista's compositional career and offers a contextual panorama of the contemporary music scene in Mexico

The Peruvian Mario Vargas Llosa has been acclaimed throughout the literary world as one of Latin America's finest writers, yet until recently little has been written about his work in English. While his work has the subject of an increasing flow of critical commentary in Spanish and his major novels have been translated into English, this is the first full-scale critical treatment of Vargas Llosa published in the English language. These articles by a number of established writers and critics appraise Vargas Llosa's individual novels as well as the body of his work. The Time of the Hero, The Green House, Conversation in The Cathedral, and Pantaleón y las visitadoras are examined in order of publication, A second group of more general essays ranges across Vargas Llosa's work and explores pervasive themes and concerns. Two pieces by José Miguel Oviedo serve as a coda. In a bilingual interview, Oviedo and Vargas Llosa discuss Vargas Llosa's novel La tía Julia y el escribidor. Oviedo concludes with a critical discussion of that novel. A Vargas Llosa chronology compiled by the editors is also included. Most of these essays originally appeared in 1977 as a special issue of Texas Studies in Literature and Language. The concluding essay by Oviedo was prepared especially for this edition.
