Operation Enduring Freedom (The war in Afghanistan): Letters written home by a U.S. Army Officer deployed to Afghanistan in 2011-2012. It tells a story of the day-to-day frustrations of building infrastructure for the rule-of-law; the dismal failures of the U.S. State Department, and of a bird feeder that seemed to be the only sane thing in the whole country. It also gives tribute to a military wife who carried the burden of three wars. "Slowly, cut by cut, the Afghans bled us, and then smiled and called us their friend. This was all occurring while the folks back home were beaming at our accomplishments and our politicians were slowly binding our hands in order not to offend our new-found Afghan friends. We quickly became a willing victim of the Afghanistan Government's internal quagmire, where we naively rushed to squander our nation's youth and treasure on this undeserving nation. " 2011 was one of the bloodiest years of the war with 415 U.S. Service Members killed and over 5,000 wounded. The letters in this book were written during this period and serve as a salute to those who sacrificed much to give the country of Afghanistan a fleeting chance at freedom and democracy. God bless all of them.

"Operation Iraqi Freedom." Letters written home about the greenest Brigade in the United States Army, deployed to the most violent district of Baghdad, and their fight to change the course of the war. In February of 2007, the 4th Brigade (Dragon Brigade) of the 1st Infantry Division was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq as part of the five U.S. "Surge" Brigades. The Dragon Brigade was assigned to the most violent sector of Baghdad known as the Rashid (Rasheed) District, a 68 square mile sector in Southern Baghdad. When the Dragon Brigade returned home after 15 months in combat, the ultimate cost of securing Rashid and re-establishing prosperity was 102 Soldiers KIA and over 700 WIA. This book and these letters written home are a testament to their sacrifices. God Bless everyone of them.

"We start with atomic parts, but these atomic parts have transitions, passages, 'tendencies, ' which circulate from one to another. These tendencies give rise to habits. Isn't this the answer to the question 'what are we' We are habits, nothing but habits-the habit of saying 'I.' Perhaps, there is no more striking answer to the problem of the Self" (Gilles Deleuze). The above passage from Gilles Deleuze encapsulates the major ideas of my dissertation. He begins the problem of a "self" not with identity or body, but with its compositional nature. However, he also does not focus on these "atomic parts" as merely reductive identities constituting a self, but rather their relationships with one another. He wants to know first and foremost about the communicative aspects that work below the scale of the self. It is thus crucial that he selected the words, tendencies, and habits, both aspects of behavior that could be construed as non-conscious because they occur primarily at the level of affection, or a body's capacity to produce and be productive of change. My project is primarily concerned with how we affect and are affected by machines. Like the above passage, I am interested in the compositional parts that make up both human and machine identities, as well as how those parts connect the two across the divide of being a living human being vs. being a machine devoid of the qualities of life and humanity. The dissertation will discuss this human/machine binary as resting on a fundamental problematic of communication-namely an ability or inability to self-express or communicate an identity that puts a body on one side or the other of the binary.
A Summer of Hummingbirds: Love, Art, and Scandal in the Intersecting Worlds of Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Martin Johnson
The country's most noted writers, poets, and artists converge at a singular moment in American life, a great companion to fans of the film A Quiet Passion, starring Cynthia Nixon as Emily Dickinson. At the close of the Civil War, the lives of Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Martin Johnson Heade intersected in an intricate map of friendship, family, and romance that marked a milestone in the development of American art and literature. Using the image of a flitting hummingbird as a metaphor for the gossamer strands that connect these larger-than-life personalities, Christopher Benfey re-creates the summer of 1882, the summer when Mabel Louise Todd-the prot g to the painter Heade-confesses her love for Emily Dickinson's brother, Austin, and the players suddenly find themselves caught in the crossfire between the Calvinist world of decorum, restraint, and judgment and a new, unconventional world in which nature prevails and freedom is all.

The artist Mark Hearld finds his inspiration in the flora and fauna of the British countryside: a blue-eyed jay perched on an oak branch; two hares enjoying the spoils of an allotment; a mute swan standing at the frozen water's edge; and a sleek red fox prowling the fields. Hearld admires such twentieth-century artists as Edward Bawden, John Piper, Eric Ravilious and Enid Marx, and, like them, he chooses to work in a range of media - paint, print, collage, textiles and ceramics. Work Book is the first collection of Hearld's beguiling art. The works are grouped into nature-related themes introduced by Hearld, who narrates the story behind some of his creations and discusses his influences. He explains his particular love of collage, which he favours for its graphic quality and potential for strong composition. Art historian Simon Martin contributes an essay on Hearld's place in the English popular-art tradition, and also meets Hearld in his museum-like home to explore the artist's passion for collecting objects, his working methods and his startling ability to view the wonders of the natural world as if through a child's eyes.

A fascinating glimpse into the creative process of a major contemporary sculptor, featuring many previously unseen works on paper American sculptor Martin Puryear (b. 1941) creates work that combines the clean elegance of minimalism and the simplicity of traditional materials. His stunning sculptures explore themes of identity, ethnicity, and history, and are rich with social and cultural commentary. Puryear, who is known for abstract, large-scale pieces in wood, stone, and bronze, has captured the attention of the art world for the past 30 years. Despite the apparent simplicity of his works, however, he engages in an extensive iterative process that has, until now, been unknown. Martin Puryear: Multiple Dimensions explores that process, featuring numerous drawings, prints, and small-scale sculptures that have never before been published. This catalogue is the first to examine Puryear’s work across media, providing invaluable insight into his visual thinking, from sketches to working drawings and constructions for sculpture. Handsomely illustrated with nearly 120 color plates that demonstrate the evolution of Puryear’s ideas between drawings, prints, and sculptures, this beautiful volume draws back the curtain on the methodology of this important and enigmatic artist.
