In the Introduction to Mark Sanders’ Riddled with Light: Metaphor in the Poetry of W. B. Yeats, critic and poet Stephen C. Behrendt writes, “Sanders shows us Yeats anew, laboring on his visionary engine to produce a profoundly metaphoric poetry and a poetics that enfranchises and empowers his audience by making that audience both a respondent and, more important, an active co-creator whose role in both the making and the performing of Yeats’ art has for too long been insufficiently understood and appreciated. In setting this matter straight, Sanders does a service for us no less than for Yeats, and in the process he reminds us of the sheer, sweeping dynamism of Yeats’ unfailingly energetic and confrontational art.” In his critical works, Sanders has written extensively about Wallace Stevens, Langston Hughes, Karl Shapiro, regional poets from the Great Plains and—a writer loyal to locale, as well—William Butler Yeats. Indeed, in the seven essays that comprise Riddled with Light, Sanders explores the development of Yeats’ metaphorical concepts throughout the poet’s career, analysing the types of metaphors Yeats used while tracing the impact of specific metaphors on a poem’s language, rhythm, metrical and grammatical structures, and form. Individual chapters are devoted to the conceptual metaphors that unify Yeats’ work and provide readers with an overreaching arc to make a comprehensive reading of the poet’s work as well as a thorough understanding of his poetics.

Test Collection Based Evaluation of Information Retrieval Systems
Use of test collections and evaluation measures to assess the effectiveness of information retrieval systems has its origins in work dating back to the early 1950s. Across the nearly 60 years since that work started, use of test collections is a de facto standard of evaluation. This monograph surveys the research conducted and explains the methods and measures devised for evaluation of retrieval systems, including a detailed look at the use of statistical significance testing in retrieval experimentation. It reviews more recent examinations of the validity of the test collection approach and evaluation measures as well as outlining trends in current research exploiting query logs and live labs.At its core, the modern-day test collection is little different from the structures that the pioneering researchers in the 1950s and 1960s conceived of. This tutorial and review shows that despite its age, this long-standing evaluation method is still a highly valued tool for retrieval research.

Don't Look Now, released in 1973, confirmed director Nicolas Roeg as one of themost stylish and innovative British directors of the postwar period. Adaptedfrom a short story by Daphne du Maurier, it is both a complex study of howpeople come to terms with grief and a chilling tale of murder set among thecanals and churches of Venice. Featuring telling performances by Julie Christieand Donald Sutherland as the couple whose daughter has tragically died,Don't Look Now depicts the way in which the macabre and the everyday areintertwined. In his lucid, subtle account, Mark Sanderson describes the collaborationbetween director and actors that sustained the film's emotional richness. He returns to du Maurier's original text and to the traditions of Gothic writingthat underpin Don't Look Now's combination of horror, melodrama and blackcomedy. Sanderson examines the film's intricate visual style, uncovering theway in which particular motifs are used to amplify its depiction of two terribledeaths. He finds compensation for the film's grimly fatalistic view of life in itscelebration of sexual relationships and the power of recollection. The bookincludes an exclusive and in-depth interview with Roeg as well as rare andunpublished comments from Christie. In his foreword to this special edition, published to celebrate the 20thanniversary of the BFI Film Classics series, Jason Wood places Don't Look Nowin the context of Roeg's film-making careeer, and draws upon Roeg's revealinginsights into the film's production.

Start Investing in Real Estate: With $75,000 to $250,000 in the Bank

Starting out in real estate investing doesn't have to be so hard All too often new real estate investors spend too much time trying to master "No Money Down" strategies when they could be focused on finding opportunities. Don't get me wrong, no money down strategies are great - they just tend to be harder to find and negotiate. So why not start your new real estate business with money in the bank using corporate credit? With your first property you may in fact need to find 100% financing for the deal. That's fine. The 100% financing isn't really the problem. The problem is how you structure that financing. New investors find that once they have found a property they really aren't negotiating from a position of strength. The fatal questions is often "how much of your own money can you put into the deal?." When your answer is zero then lenders tend to shy away. The typical lender wants you to have "skin" in the game so that you are properly motivated to finish the deal and pay them back. The next question of "have you done a flip before?" becomes a lot harder to answer. So, what if you had $75,000 in the bank? Then when a lender asks, "how much of your own money can you put into the deal?" you can answer "I'm putting $50,000 in now and have $25,000 in reserves. That way I can handle any surprises." You are still using 100% financing on the deal. You just structured the funding so you got some of the money "early" with corporate credit. Now you have a much stronger negotiating position and questions become easier to answer.Just like your personal credit score, your business will have a credit score. You need to learn how to develop and manage your business credit score just like any other asset you own. In this book Tony walks you through the steps to establishing your business credit. Once established you can then pursue corporate credit for your new real estate business - and it is a business In this book we will also discuss how to find companies that help you find the money and establish your corporate credit. In fact, that's what Tony and his team do every day So, don't let your bank account balance hold you back from becoming a real estate investor.

The bestselling introduction to designing the written word Typographic Design: Form & Communication is the definitive reference for graphic designers, providing a comprehensive introduction to the visual word. Done well, typopgraphy can communicate so much more than the words themselves. Typographic design determines how you feel about a message, the associations you make, and ultimately, the overall success of the communication. Typographic design extends from the page to the screen, and is a critical element of almost any graphic design project. This book provides essential guidance on everything related to type: from letterforms and negative space, to messaging, processes, and history, aspiring designers will find great utility in mastering these critical concepts. This new seventh edition has been fully updated with new coverage of contemporary typography processes, updated case studies, and new examples from branding, print, web, motion, and more. On-screen typographic design concepts are discussed in greater detail, and the online supplemental materials include new flashcards, terminology and quizzes. Understand design factors as they relate to typeExplore communication and typographic messagingLearn how typography has evolved, and where it is headedAdopt established approaches to designing with type The irony of typographic design is that, when done well, it often goes unnoticed—but its impact on a project’s overall success is undeniable. Typography can make or break a page, can enhance or overpower an image, and can obscure a message or bring it into sharp focus. It is one of the most powerful tools in the graphic designer’s arsenal, and Typographic Design is the complete, practical introduction.

Jonathan Wateridge was born in Lusaka, Zambia, in 1972. Today he lives and works in Norfolk, UK. This, the artist’s first trade monograph, presents two significant bodies of work, ‘Enclave’ and ‘Expatria’. In these series, Wateridge returns to his childhood memories of growing up within the privileged white ex-pat communities of Zambia in the 1970s and 1980s, during the early years of the country’s independence from British rule. ‘Having grown up in an apparent world of sunshine and suburban pools, I sought to overlap those aspects of my formative experiences with the wider issues of the West’s post-colonial role,’ Wateridge has stated. His recent paintings, produced with the artist’s characteristic virtuosity and based on elaborate studio stage sets replete with a varied cast of actors, also seek to explore more lyrical figurative languages offered by the medium, adding to the uneasy dynamics that haunt these memorable and accomplished works. This hardback monograph, designed by Peter B. Willberg, has been edited and authored by London-based independent curator, writer and art consultant Mark Sanders. The publication features an essay by Dr Gilda Williams, a London correspondent for Artforum who also teaches art writing on the MFA Curating programme at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Presenting over 130 paintings and details, this 200-page monograph is essential reading for anybody passionate about contemporary painting, and makes a valuable contribution to discussion of the post-colonial condition in the visual arts.
