Originally published in 1960. This title presents a discussion of bureaucracy and enterprise and how they are related and might be combined. Case studies of various businesses, including Marks and Spencer, are used to illustrate this idea. Most of the companies examined are large and have all been at least partially successful in solving some of the difficulties of administration that businessmen and government officials constantly encounter. The present book was an attempt to break new ground, to suggest some new syntheses, to seek some practical explanations, and to propose some practical solutions. This title will be of interest to students of Business Studies and Management.

The Federal Reserve System has been widely criticised for its response (or lack of response) to the economic and financial problems of 1928-1933. This period was one of frantic speculation followed by the collapse of the stock market, the banking system and the economy at large. How did the Fed let this happen, and was it to blame? This book, first published in 1993, carries out an in-depth statistical analysis of the relevant data supporting the various theories surrounding the Fed’s behaviour at the time, and is a key work in understanding the thinking of the period.

Manhood Enslaved

Manhood Enslaved

Manhood Enslaved reconstructs the lives of three male captives to bring greater intellectual and historical clarity to the muted lives of enslaved peoples in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century central New Jersey, where blacks were held in bondage for nearly two centuries. The book contributes to an evolving body of historical scholarship arguing that the lives of bondpeople in America were shaped not only by the powerful forces of racial oppression, but also by their own notions of gender. The book uses previously understudied, white-authored, nineteenth-century literature about central New Jersey slaves as a point of departure. Reading beyond the racist assumptions of the authors, it contends that the precarious day-to-day existence of the three protagonists -- Yombo Melick, Dick Melick, and Quamino Buccau (Smock) -- provides revealing evidence about the various elements of "slave manhood" that gave real meaning to their oppressed lives. Kenneth E. Marshall is Assistant Professor of History at the State University of New York at Oswego.

'Fledgling Colony of Brisbane Decimated by an Unstoppable Plague' This could have been the headline of a Brisbane newspaper in 1905 if not for the sacrifice of two Maryborough nurses. In the port town of Maryborough, Queensland a family of poverty-stricken children dies from and unknown but highly contagious disease. By the time it was diagnosed as being the deadliest of all plagues, the airborne Pneumonic Plague, it had claimed the lives of five children, a good Samaritan neighbour and two nurses within a matter of days. The Health Department of Queensland sent specialized plague nurses from Brisbane to escort the Maryborough nurses by train to the Colmslie Plague Hospital in Brisbane. Knowing that they had now contracted the air borne disease that would spread to the train passengers and the Brisbane population, Nurse Cecelia Bauer and Nurse Rose Wiles refused. They locked themselves in a ward and rejected assistance from the plague nurses. The disease died out with them, but their bravery and sacrifice has been rewarded with obscurity. This novel brings us into the modern-day events where pneumonic plague is one of the major bio-terrorism threats. So little is known about this disease that political and medical research is being carried out around the globe. In this story a fictitious military doctor representing one of these groups arrives in Maryborough to secretly harvest DNA samples from the human remnants of the pneumonic plague victims. Seeing the event through the eyes of a local amateur historian, he becomes a champion for the public recognition of these two angels of mercy.
