Social DNA

Social DNA

M. Kay Martin

Berghahn Books

What set our ancestors off on a separate evolutionary trajectory was the ability to flex their reproductive and social strategies in response to changing environmental conditions. Exploring new cross-disciplinary research that links this capacity to critical changes in the organization of the primate brain, Social DNA presents a new synthesis of ideas on human social origins – challenging models that trace our beginnings to traits shaped by ancient hunting economies, or to genetic platforms shared with contemporary apes.

Kay Fisker (1893-1965) is considered one of the most influential Danish architects of the twentieth century, and yet there has existed until now no in-depth English-language study of his works and writing.Published as part of the Bloomsbury Studies in Modern Architecture series, which brings to light the work of significant yet overlooked modernist architects, this book examines Fisker’s key projects – from his early railway stations and innovative housing projects to the Danish Academy in Rome – and analyses his work as a historian and writer.Fisker’s output is closely associated with the functional tradition, a hybridization of international modernism and regional architectural typologies, and this book shows how his architectural poetics can be understood as an amalgamation of an ideal order with the contingent conditions of landscapes and urban sites. Hybridization is not only a valuable notion for understanding Fisker, the book argues, it can also be applied to an understanding of modernist architecture as a whole, with its various expressions, agendas and tensions both regionally and internationally.

The life of a multitalented legend Sallie Martin combined fame as a performer with a far-sighted business acumen that brought Black gospel music to a national audience and laid the foundation for the industry that followed. Kay Norton's biography follows Martin's parallel careers from her early plans to grow the genre through her celebrity in the 1960s–1970s and eventful retirement. "Same old Sallie Martin, same old Jesus," she once told audiences, a reflection of both her musical style and unapologetic approach to life. Cofounder of the National Conference of Gospel Choirs and Choruses, Martin also co-established the pioneering Black music publisher Martin and Morris Music Studio. Her group the Sallie Martin Singers took Chicago gospel to all points of the compass and Martin mentored and employed dozens of aspiring vocalists and instrumentalists. Norton looks at Martin's important relationships and the challenges she faced, while placing her accomplishments and legacy on the arc of gospel music history. In-depth and powerful, Sallie Martin, Mother of Gospel Music tells the story of one woman's role in shaping the music and business of Black gospel.

Contemporary British artist Kaye Donachie (b.1970) is best known for her figurative, dream-like portraits of women. Her portraits are not direct representations of her subjects but are “abstract narratives”, informed by art and literature by twentieth century women. Often these women have been historically marginalized and include radical writers, activists, poets, and artists. Donachie describes their biographies as “sparse, but that affords a space in which to interpret narratives in my painting and representation.” This monograph will bring together a selection of the artist's muted, figurative paintings, exploring the complexities of the muse and female agency in art and literature. It includes an introduction by Simon Martin based on interviews with the artist exploring her engagement with modern art and literature, together with short texts by the artist herself. Exhibition Schedule: Pallant House Gallery, Chichester (April 22–October 8, 2023)

Praying by Heart brings energy and solitude to the discipline of prayer. Using vivid imagery and dynamic rhythm, Kay Bessler Northcutt moves through the seasons of the liturgical year, covering Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Ordinary Time. An invaluable resource for clergy and lay leaders--in both public and private prayer--Praying by Heart echoes the poetry and spirit of the Psalms in a contemporary Christian voice. Northcutt's lyrical poetry will inspire the soul. ""These are not sentimental or jargon-ridden 'care and share' outpourings. They aim to be directly about their business of carrying on the conversation between a self-disclosing God and the people collected. The agent will be the pastor who prays off these pages, using words by an expressive author who has the grace to move herself off stage and let the prayers be those of 'us' and not 'me.' Let us pray."" --Martin E. Marty, from the Foreword Kay Bessler Nothcutt is a writer, retreat leader, spiritual formation director, and assistant conductor of the Tulsa Children's Choir. She is an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

A rebus is a hieroglyphic of sorts - it combines pictures with letter sounds (adding or subtracting them) to make a word or phrase. Rebuses fascinate children of all ages, and "Rebuses for Readers" presents more than 100 rebuses of these intriguing brain teasers for elementary students. 50 of the rebuses are based on books, with selections for primary, intermediate and upper grades. An additional 15 are "Authors in Rebus Form", 15 are "Characters in Rebus Form" and 10 are "Settings in Rebus Form". The authors have also included some "Make Your Own" rebuses (with some sample solutions). The final chapter, "Challenges", provides students with some basic pictures and a list of book titles for which to create rebuses. Each chapter includes an annotated bibliography of the books on which the rebuses are based; annotations include a brief description, grade level and general subject.
