This book offers an overview, as much as possible, of what Dr. Marvin Johnson learned over 55 years of counseling individuals, families and groups, helping them solve mental health or relationship problems. His education includes a Masters Degree in Social Work and a Doctorate in Psychology. This background led him to work in different settings, all dealing with personal and family mental health problems. For 24 years Dr. Johnson was a Division Chairman of the Social Work Department at Lutheran General Hospital, a major teaching Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois. Following that he served as Program Coordinator for an in-patient psychiatric unit at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Illinois. He then set up a private practice along with two other psychologists, where he worked full time for about twenty years and part time for four more years. Upon retirement, he became a volunteer for the Cancer Care Foundation and Journey Care Hospice, offering free psychotherapy to patients and their families at the end of life. Dr. Johnson states, "This book will fall in the category of 'Self Help'. We know that no book can be of total help to its readers, therefore my goal has been to present some broad ideas and look at some specific problem areas, all of which I have dealt with in my career. Having worked with thousands of individuals, couples and groups to help identify and deal with their problems in the best way they can, I know that not all problems can be solved through psychotherapy, but many can be understood, clarified and improved, making life more fulfilling."

Voltaire and the Theatre of the Eighteenth Century

Voltaire and the Theatre of the Eighteenth Century

Born in the final years of the seventeenth century, and dying a decade before the beginning of the French Revolution, Voltaire was a quintessential figure of the eighteenth century, so much so that this era is sometimes called the Age of Voltaire. At a time when French culture dominated Europe, Voltaire dominated French culture. His influence was broad and powerful, and he made major contributions to almost every sphere of intellectual activity, including the sciences, trade and commerce, politics, and especially the arts. Despite the astonishing range of his literary activities, the theatre occupied a central position in his life from the beginning of his career to its close. His first and last literary triumphs were plays, the first written when he was only 17, the last completed when he was 84. He created a total of 56, and there was rarely a time in his life when he was not working on a theatrical script. At the end of his career, his works were produced more frequently on the French stage than those of any other serious dramatist and served as models for aspiring young playwrights throughout Europe.Written by a leading authority on French theatre and culture in the eighteenth century, this book traces the theatrical career of Voltaire from his college days through his final works. The most influential dramatist of the period, he successfully wrote in a number of genres, including tragedy, comedy, opera, comic opera, and court spectacle. His theatrical biography involves all aspects of acting and staging in amateur and society theatre as well as on major professional stages and performances at court. His extended visits to England and Germany are covered in chapters that also provide an introduction to the theatre in those countries, and his international interests and correspondence provide insights into the eighteenth century theatre in places such as Italy, Russia, and Denmark. Due to his literally life-long concern with the theatre, his dominance in this art, and his reputation and involvement with the theatre outside France, Voltaire's theatrical biography is also in large measure a chronicle of the European stage of the eighteenth century.

The Legislature as an Organization

The Legislature as an Organization

Marvin A. Harder; Raymond G. Davis

University Press of Kansas
1991
nidottu
An innovative approach to legislative study, this volume views the Kansas legislature from the perspective of organization theory. Authors Marvin A. Harder and Raymond G. Davis examine the technical and procedural aspects of the legislature that most scholars have overlooked. They provide a careful, precise, theoretical study of the organization and structure, administrative and staff relationships, and formal processes of the legislature. Applying the concepts of organization theory, Harder and Davis describe and analyze how the Kansas legislature works. They cover the legislative staff, the networks of communication and socialization, the role of leadership, the committees, and the legislative functions of lawmaking and of overseeing. They also discuss recent changes in the legislature and give a profile of the legislators. This book breaks new ground by focusing on organization theory, rather than political analysis, to explain the dynamics of legislative operations. Of particular value to Kansas legislators and students of Kansas legislative process, it will also contribute to the general literature about American legislative institutions.

Though "biblical theology" has long been considered a strictly Christian enterprise, Marvin A. Sweeney here proposes a Jewish theology of the Hebrew Bible, based on the importance of Tanak as the foundation of Judaism and organized around the major components: Torah, Nevi'im (Prophets), and Kethuvim (Writings). Sweeney finds the structuring themes of Jewish life: the constitution of the nation Israel in relation to God; the disruption of that ideal, documented by the Prophets; and the reconstitution of the nation around the Second Temple in the Writings. Throughout he is attentive to tensions within and among the texts and the dialogical character of Israel's sacred heritage.
Reading the Hebrew Bible after the Shoah

Reading the Hebrew Bible after the Shoah

Marvin A. Sweeney

Fortress Press,U.S.

pokkari
Is theology possible after the Shoah? Marvin Sweeney challenges biblical theologians to take that question with utmost seriousness. Sweeney examines often ignored biblical texts where ancient Israel contemplated the problem of apparent divine absence and "divine evil," and finds the perspective of post-Holocaust theology an indispensable interpretive resource. In biblical stories like those of Abraham, Moses, Jeroboam, Manasseh, Josiah, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Esther, Job, and more, Sweeney finds the recognition "that human beings cannot always depend upon God to act to ensure righteousness in the world." The insistence, common among Holocaust theologians, that human beings must assume their own responsibility for doing justice and righteousness in the world is, Sweeney argues, powerfully present already in the Bible itself. This book is an important contribution to modern biblical theology and to Holocaust theology as well.

The Book of Zephaniah poses a full range of interpretive and hermenutical issues for the modern reader. Sweeney's keen reading of this small, prophetic book opens new doors for Hebrew Bible research. He situates the reading of Zephaniah in the early sixth century B.C.E. rather than the late seventh century B.C.E.Sweeney's interpretation pays close attention to the often subtle differences between the Masoretic Text, Septuagint, Dead Sea Scrolls, Peshitta, and targums. His methodology includes form criticism, tradition history, and social history.

"A lucid, well-organized survey of the almost infinite variety of production spaces of western theatre.... Carlson's survey must be admired for its wealth of carefully researched and elegantly articulated information concerning the relation of urban planning, architecture, and interior and exterior theatre embellishment to the social, political, economic and occasionally even aesthetic purposes of those responsible for these 'signifiers.'"—Theatre Journal In this generously illustrated volume, Marvin Carlson uses models from architectural and urban semiotics to show how a theatre building and its location within a city reflect society's attitudes and concerns.

1 Samuel is Volume VII of The Forms of the Old Testament Literature, a series that aims to present a form-critical analysis of every book and each unit in the Hebrew Bible. Fundamentally exegetical, the FOTL volumes examine the structure, genre, setting, and intention of the biblical literature in question. They also study the history behind the form-critical discussion of the material, attempt to bring consistency to the terminology for the genres and formulas of the biblical literature, and expose the exegetical process so as to enable students and pastors to engage in their own analysis and interpretation of the Old Testament texts. Antony Campbell's valuable form-critical analysis of 1 Samuel highlights both the literary development of the text itself and its meanings for its audience. A skilled student of the Hebrew scriptures and their ancient context, Campbell shows modern readers the process of editing and reworking that shaped 1 Samuel's final form. As Campbell's study reveals, the tensions and contradictions that exist in the present text reflect a massive change in the way of life of ancient Israel.Samuel, the first prophet, here emerges to preside over the rise of Saul, Israel's first king, to be the agent of Saul's rejection, and to anoint David as Israel's next king and the first established head of a royal dynasty. The book of 1 Samuel captures the work of God within this interplay of sociopolitical forces, and Campbell fruitfully explores the text both as a repository of traditions of great significance for Israel and as a paradigm of Israel's use of narrative for theological expression.

Isaiah 40-66, by Marvin A. Sweeney, is the nineteenth published volume in The Forms of Old Testament Literature (FOTL), a series that provides a form-critical analysis of the books and units in the Hebrew Bible. Building on his earlier FOTL volume Isaiah 1-39, Sweeney here presents his analysis of Isaiah 40-66 within both the synchronic literary form of Isaiah and the diachronic history of its composition. In keeping with the methodology and goals of the FOTL series, Isaiah 40-66 offers detailed examinations of the formal structure of the chapters covered; the genres that function within these chapters; the literary, historical, and social settings of the text; and the overall interpretation of Isaiah 40-66 and its constituent textual units. Including a glossary of the genres and formulas discussed, this commentary will be a useful resource to anyone wishing to engage more deeply with this central book in the Hebrew Bible.
