Mary Ellen Mark and Karen Folger Jacobs: Ward 81: Voices
Mark's classic account of a women's locked ward, featuring additional photographs and documentation Photographed in 1976, Ward 81 was Mary Ellen Mark's (1940-2015) first independent long-term project. Mark and writer Karen Folger Jacobs (born 1940) set out to document the lives of the women in this locked ward at the Oregon State Hospital in Salem--the only one in the state. Every day for five weeks, Mark photographed and Jacobs interviewed the women on Ward 81. At night they slept in an empty adjacent ward. Ward 81: Voices, an expanded edition of the original 1979 book, includes previously unpublished photographs, excerpts from interviews with patients and recorded conversations between Mark and Jacobs, as well as new essays examining the influence of their project. Ward 81 has always been considered one of the best examples of Mark's ability to portray subjects living on the edges of society with compassion. The inclusion of the women's voices gives invaluable insight, not only into the lives of the patients, but also into Mark and Jacobs' experiences and the challenges they faced during their collaboration.

Welcome back to one of Michigan's most famous and popular tourist towns. It's hard to believe it has only 5,000 residents. Poppy and Mary Ellen earned a reputation for themselves in the last book when they helped the police solve a double homicide, even beating the police to the capture. This time, though, Poppy finds herself topping the suspect list of the murder of a Mah Jongg playing tourist. Some familiar characters are back, both canine and human, and there's even some romance in the air that might surprise readers. Those who play Mah Jongg and follow conversations about "friendly games" will find themselves laughing out loud. Although by far most of the story takes place in the popular and quirky confines of Frankenmuth, readers get to travel all the way to Nairobi in Book 2. Like Book 1, everyone will need their seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy ride.

From the author of The Arctic Fox and Lily Dragon, a moving and exciting new novel set in Africa about a child with a special relationship with elephants. Roaring Good Reads: For Confident Readers 7 – 10 Shola was five when she was found by scientists in the Bakuli National Park in Africa. Exhausted and half-starved, she had been kept safe by a family of elephants who had treated her as one of their young. Shola goes to live with the scientists and their son, Leo, who is thrilled to have an older sister. But when Leo’s parents are killed in a plane crash, Leo is sent back to live in England. Returning to Africa some years later, Leo is shocked to find that Shola hasn’t spoken since the tragic accident and that a growing number of the elephants are being killed for ivory. He and Shola set off to find ‘their’ elephants, despite the danger of the poachers, and along with their favourite elephant Shola also finds her voice. This is Shola’s story, told by Leo , about the idyllic life they lead in Africa surrounded by wildlife – elephants in particular – an idyllic life that is cut short by danger and death . It’s a novel of adventure and family ties crossing two cultures – African and European – and two kingdoms, human and animal. A third novel from Mary Ellis, that is both lyrical and exciting; thrilling and moving.

The Power and Purpose of International Law

The Power and Purpose of International Law

The world is poised for another important transition. The United States will soon have a new president, someone who will have to deal with the impact of the Afghan and Iraq wars, the use of torture and secret detention, Guantanamo, climate change, nuclear proliferation, weakened international institutions, and other issues related directly or indirectly to international law. The next president and the public worldwide need an accurate account of the important role of international law and The Power and Purpose of International Law seeks to provide it. Mary Ellen O'Connell explains the purpose of international law and the power it has to achieve that purpose. International law supports order in the world and the attainment of humanity's fundamental goals of peace, prosperity, respect for human rights, and protection of the natural environment. These goals can best be realized through international law, which uniquely has the capacity to bind even a superpower of the world. By exploring the roots and history of international law, and by looking at specific events in the history of international law, this book demonstrates the why and the how of international law and its enforcement. It directly confronts the notion that international law is "powerless" and that working within the framework of international law is useless or counter-productive. As the world moves forward, it is critical that both leaders and their citizens understand the true power and purpose of international law and this book creates a valuable resource for them to aid their understanding. It uses a clear, compelling style to convey topical, informative and cutting-edge information to the reader.
