Ja, sjølve meininga med livet. Og kvar leitar ein for å finne meininga med livet? I popmusikken, sjølvsagt. Kalvø er overtydd om at alle som har leita etter meininga med livet, har leita på feil plass. Kalvø trur meininga er å finne i dei skikkelig populære songane som omgir oss heile tida og følgjer oss gjennom livet: songane som har toppa Norges offisielle hitliste VG-lista. Då interessa for Friedrich Nietzsche vakna første gongen, var Arne Garborg ein av dei som bles i luren. Han tok imot sterke impulsar frå Nietzsche, men utan å ende som servil disippel. Filosof Jon Hellesnes tek her for seg religionskritikken hos både Nietzsche og Garborg. Dei to er ulike i tilnærminga si, og ulikskapen viser at det kan finnast fleire variantar av religionskritikk, alt etter kva filosofi den nærer seg av. Han meiner det er misforstått toleranse, og rett og slett farleg, å gjere religionskritikk tabu, fordi forfallsformer av religion i dag utgjer dødelege ideologiar. I denne boka blir den diskursive religionskritikken som Arne Garborg leverte i 1880-åra, undersøkt og presentert for første gong, etter å ha vore sletta frå det kulturelle minnet. Hellesnes kommenterer også relativt kjende innslag i Garborgs forfattarskap. Han argumenterer for at dei religionskritiske og kulturfilosofiske skriftene til " "den fremste norske intellektuelle ved førre hundreårsskiftet" " er høgaktuelle i dag.

Mesindusest on tänaseks eesti keeles juba nii palju raamatuid ilmunud, et nendest saaks kokku kohe väikese raamatukogu. Kuid seda raamatukogu sirvides jääb sealt midagi justkui puudu... Puuduva otsimisel ütlesin mesinikele, et ma uurin seda, mis jääb kirjapandud teadmise taha. Üsna tihti sain vastuse: "Enamik asju jääb kirjapandud teksti taha." Sealt siis hakkasingi teemadega hargnema ja nendest harudest sündisid käesoleva raamatu alapealkirjad. Meid ümbritsev liigirikkus on küll otse, küll kaudselt seotud meie endi tegevusega. Teiste liikidega koos elamine ja nendega arvestamine on nüüd üha tähtsamaks teemaks tõusnud. Meie inimestena tahame ju korrastada ja kodustada oma ümbrust ja tänaseks ületab kodustatud loomade arv kordades metsikute loomade kogumassi. Kõige arvukamalt on loomadest aga putukaid ja me Euroopas oleme kodustanud vaid ühe neist - Euroopa meemesilase. Siiski pole meemesilase kodustamine jõudnud nii kaugele, et ta inimesele kuuletuks, ta käitub ja areneb ikka oma ürgsete instinktide järgi. During the late nineteenth century a remarkable combination of circumstances and individual talents permitted the Court theatre of a small German state to become the theatrical sensation of its age. The Meiningen Court Theatre developed into an international touring company under the leadership of Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen. This book is based on a wide range of published and unpublished contemporary documents, photographs and sketches (many of which are reproduced here). In this 1988 volume, Professor Osborne provides a broad cultural-historical context for the emergence of the Meiningen Company and describes in detail the style and staging of productions, as well as the personality and directorial method of the Duke himself. Two famous items in the Company's repertoire, Julius Caesar and Prinz Friedrich von Homburg, are selected for particular attention. The Meiningen Company became famous throughout Europe, and became a source of inspiration to future directors of the modern theatre such as Antoine, Brahm and Stanislavsky.
