Gloria Swanson

ROWMAN LITTLEFIELD

Gloria Swanson is most remembered today for her role as “Norma Desmond” in Billy Wilder’s noir sound classic Sunset Boulevard (1950), but Swanson during her heyday was heralded as filmdom’s leading fashion queen, as proclaimed by director Cecil B. DeMille in such silent motion pictures as Male and Female (1919), Why Change YourHusband (1921), and The Affairs of Anatol (1922). Throughout that decade and well into the 1930s Swanson set fashion standards on and off the screen in creations designed by such illustrious couturieres as Mitchell Leisen, Paul Iribe, Norman Norell, Sonia Delaunay, Max Ree, Capt. Edward H. Molyneux, Coco Chanel, Rene Hubert, and later Edith Head. In the 1950s she designed and managed her own line of ready to wear fashion patterns called Forever Young for women of a discernable age. Gloria Swanson: Hollywood’s First Glamour Queen is a photographic tribute to this extraordinary woman. Focusing on sense of style and fashion, the book contains hundreds of personal and professional photographs, many never-before-published, and running biographical commentary by biographer Stephen Michael Shearer, author of the definitive book of the star, Gloria Swanson: TheUltimate Star (St. Martin’s Press-Macmillan).

Recorded within these pages is the history of the Sacramento Pioneer Association during the organization's formative first six years. Founded in 1854 by pioneers of the California Gold Rush, the Sacramento Pioneer Association was an historical, civic and cultural society composed of some of Sacramento's most prominent men. Transcribed from newspaper articles contemporary with that bygone era, "News of the Day" is a journey back in time, back to the American Victorian era of California, back to the lives and times of the Sacramento Pioneers.
Sheading of Michael (Kirk Michael, Ballaugh and Jurby)
The second volume Sheading of Michael embraces the parishes of Kirk Michael, Ballaugh, and Jurby on the western side of the island. The material appears in alphabetical form with discussion of any problems of interpretation, and a listing of the elements making up the names. Field names are given under their respective forms. In the absence of early documentary material in Man, especially for the main native language Manx Gaelic, the testimony of place-names is therefore important in tracing the development of spoken Gaelic in the island from ca. 13th century onwards. It is also important for the distribution of name elements showing patterns of settlement, whether Gaelic, Scandinavian, etc., and for comparative place-name research in adjacent areas, particularly Ireland, south-western Scotland, and northern England.

Like Shards of Glass

When you encounter someone with "obvious" mental health issues or what I refer to as "Throw Aways", what do you think, feel, how do you "deal" with this encounter? For many, it's get away quickly, like if this person before them has leprosy or something. If the roles were reversed, how would you wish to be treated? "Like Shards of Glass" begins a journey down a path, not a straight line journey from point "A" to the next and so on. No, it goes where it will; such seems to be the nature of mental illness, along with confusion, doubt, shame, anger, and despair. On this path, you are free to leave at any time simply by turning a page or closing the book. Those that live with these issues don't have that option. I was in the Navy for ten years when I began to remember things that occurred in my childhood. While in the Navy, I was diagnosed with major depression, recurrent, chronic depression, and PTSD. These books "talk" about my experiences. Again thank you for your interest in my works. (Mature Readers)
The Manx Shearwater

The Manx Shearwater

The Manx Shearwater must rank amongst the world's most evocative seabirds. Whether it be seen slicing the wave tips of a stormy sea or uttering its weird strident cry in the night sky above a breeding colony, it has all the magic that a bird lover could wish for - and many of the characteristics that make seabirds of such interest to biologists. For the better part of 17 years Michael Brooke has studied Manx Shearwaters at their Atlantic colonies. A number of expeditions have also enabled him to investigate at first hand other shearwater and petrel species in many isolated parts of the world. In this book he describes the fruits of his own and other research, synthesizing a wealth of data for the scientist and amateur alike. The breeding biology, vocal behaviour, transequatorial migrations and population dynamics of the bird are described in detail and comparisons are drawn with other shearwaters and petrels, to show how the various species have adapted to local conditions worldwide. Delightful vignettes by Dafila Scott complete this enthralling book. Jacket painting by Peter Harrison
The 1985 Pacific Salmon Treaty

The 1985 Pacific Salmon Treaty

For thousands of years, Pacific salmon have been the focus for the economic and social development of societies, both ancient and modern, around the rim of the North Pacific Ocean. After lengthy oceanic migrations, the salmon pass through coastal waters of Alaska, British Columbia, and the northwest United States in a final journey to spawn, where they form lucrative targets for Canadian and US fishermen.Beginning late in the nineteenth century and culminating in the 1985 Pacific Salmon Treaty, Canada and the United States carried out long and contentious negotiations to provide a framework for cooperation for conserving and sharing the vitally important Pacific salmon resource. The 1985 Pacific Salmon Treaty traces the history of the tumultuous negotiations, providing an insider's perspective on the many complex issues that were addressed. It concludes with a brief assessment of the treaty's performance under the difficult economic and environmental circumstances that have prevailed in the fishery since 1985.This incisive work, with its unique historical perspective, will be of great interest to the Canadian and United States fishing communities affected by the treaty, to the general public, politicians, and fisheries specialists in both countries concerned with stewardship of natural resources, and to scholars of international law and regional history.

Where do asteroids come from and what are they made of? What clues do they hold about the evolution of the Solar System? Scientists have catalogued hundreds of thousands of asteroids, and many are thought to contain water and amino acids, the building blocks of life. Michael K. Shepard tells the fascinating story of their discovery, and what they can tell us about the history of our own planet. He describes how we find and study asteroids, what they look like through the eyes of powerful telescopes and spacecraft, and plans for future sample return missions. This timely book interweaves accessible scientific explanations with historical background and personal narrative, providing an engaging read for anyone curious about asteroids and what they may mean for our future - both as threats and opportunities.
Introduction to Planetary Photometry

Introduction to Planetary Photometry

Michael K. Shepard

Cambridge University Press
2017
sidottu
Introducing planetary photometry as a quantitative remote sensing tool, this handbook demonstrates how reflected light can be measured and used to investigate the physical properties of bodies in our Solar System. The author explains how data gathered from telescopes and spacecraft are processed and used to infer properties such as the size, shape, albedo, and composition of celestial objects including planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. Beginning with an overview of the history and background theory of photometry, later chapters delve into the physical principles behind commonly used photometric models and the mechanics of observation, data reduction, and analysis. Real-world examples, problems, and case studies are included, all at an introductory level suitable for new graduate students, planetary scientists, amateur astronomers and researchers looking for an overview of this field.
