The Only Game in Town

An incisive analysis of the state of the global economy and what the future holds.Surrounded by sluggish growth, high rates of unemployment, rising inequality, growing financial instability and increased social tensions, pessimism about our future abounds. Dr. Mohamed A. El-Erian, one of the world's most influential economic thinkers, explains lucidly the realities of the economic choices that we will soon face. The path that the global economy and markets are on is ending. But what comes thereafter is far from predestined. It critically depends on choices that we make as households and companies, and decisions that our political representatives take. The Only Game in Town details how the world is increasingly being shaken, both from above and from below. It illuminates the growing internal contradictions, the constraints that are undermining growth and prosperity, and the radical overhaul in thinking that is required. In the aftermath of the financial crisis, central banks were handed responsibility for the fate of the global economy. Lifting the veil on the inner workings of these powerful and innovative institutions, El-Erian explains why they cannot save us this time around. Laying out a road map for growth, The Only Game in Town shows how and why collaboration between central bankers, policymakers and business leaders is essential. Drawing on insights from behavioral science, economics and finance, this book provides the tools needed to understand the uncertainties that lie ahead and return us to a path of prosperity. Thought provoking and insightful, this book is required reading for investors, policymakers, and anyone interested in the future.
The Only Game in Town: Central Banks, Instability, and Recovering from Another Collapse
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - A roadmap to what lies ahead and the decisions we must make now to stave off the next global economic and financial crisis, from one of the world's most influential economic thinkers and the author of When Markets Collide - Updated, with a new chapter and author's note "The one economic book you must read now . . . If you want to understand our] bifurcated world and where it's headed, there is no better interpreter than Mohamed El-Erian."--Time Our current economic path is coming to an end. The signposts are all around us: sluggish growth, rising inequality, stubbornly high pockets of unemployment, and jittery financial markets, to name a few. Soon we will reach a fork in the road: One path leads to renewed growth, prosperity, and financial stability, the other to recession and market disorder. In The Only Game in Town, El-Erian casts his gaze toward the future of the global economy and markets, outlining the choiceswe face both individually and collectively in an era of economic uncertainty and financial insecurity. Beginning with their response to the 2008 global crisis, El-Erian explains how and why our central banks became the critical policy actors--and, most important, why they cannot continue is this role alone. They saved the financial system from collapse in 2008 and a multiyear economic depression, but lack the tools to enable a return to high inclusive growth and durable financial stability. The time has come for a policy handoff, from a prolonged period of monetary policy experimentation to a strategy that better targets what ails economies and distorts the financial sector--before we stumble into another crisis. The future, critically, is not predestined. It is up to us to decide where we will go from here as households, investors, companies, and governments. Using a mix of insights from economics, finance, and behavioral science, this book gives us the tools we need to properly understand this turning point, prepare for it, and come out of it stronger. A comprehensive, controversial look at the realities of our global economy and markets, The Only Game in Town is required reading for investors, policymakers, and anyone interested in the future.

While there have always been high levels of philanthropic giving in the Global South, the urgency and unexpectedness of COVID-19 transformed the parameters within which philanthropy operates. 'Reimagining Philanthropy in the Global South' examines how newer models of philanthropy are tackling development challenges, including poverty, inequality and access to healthcare and education, and questions how organisations are coping with structural changes in donor-driven philanthropy; how changes in traditional grant making are impacting the imperatives of recipient organisations; and how indigenous philanthropy is making a difference. The chapters provide frank assessments of the priorities, challenges and opportunities of emerging market philanthropy, and the lessons learned from the pandemic. The authors highlight the deeper issues at play, as well as offering ideas and positive examples of how diverse stakeholders are coming together to solve social challenges in creative and practical ways. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Electric power engineering education traditionally covers safety of the power equipment and systems. Little attention, if any, is given to the safety of people. When they reach professional status, most power engineers are not familiar with electric safety issues such as practices governing site works or grounding techniques of dwellings, hospitals, and factories. Designed for both electrical engineering student and practicing power engineers, Electric Safety: Practice and Standards provides the knowledge and analysis they need to be well versed in electric safety. Features: Includes techniques to assess safety practices at worksites and provides remedies to correct safety problemsAddresses the elusive stray voltage problem and provides techniques to mitigate its impact in dwellings as well as in sensitive installations such as hospitals and dairy farmsProvides approximate, yet accurate, analyses and techniques that can be used to assess electric safety without the need for extensive computation or elaborate programsIncludes several case studies from real events and examples demonstrating how variations in electric safety procedure implementation influence safety levelsBased on the authors’ years of experience as an expert witness and electric safety training instructor, the book covers the analysis of electric safety practices as well as the interpretations of various safety codes. Including homework problems and a solutions manual, this book is a comprehensive guide to recognize and eliminate hazards of electric shocks for professionals working on electric power equipment, as well as people such as the general public in commonly used places, farms workers and animals, and hospital patients.

It is not an exaggeration to state that most problems dealt with in economic theory can be formulated as problems in optimization theory. This holds true for the paradigm of "behavioral" optimization in the pursuit of individual self interests and societally efficient resource allocation, as well as for equilibrium paradigms where existence and stability problems in dynamics can often be stated as "potential" problems in optimization. For this reason, books in mathematical economics and in mathematics for economists devote considerable attention to optimization theory. However, with very few exceptions, the reader who is interested in further study is left with the impression that there is no further place to go to and that what is in these second hand sources is all these is available as far as the subject of optimization theory is concerned. On the other hand the main results from mathematics are often carelessly stated or, more often than not, they do not get to be formally stated at all. Furthermore, it should be well understood that economic theory in general and, mathematical economics in particular, must be classified as special types of applied mathematics or, more precisely, of motivated mathematics since tools of mathematical analysis are used to prove theorems in an economics context in the manner in which probability theory may be classified. Hence, rigor and correct scholarship are of utmost importance and can not be subject to compromise.

Economic, political, and social factors stand at the heart of the struggle for African development. They are three sides of the same triangle and reform in each area must go hand-in-hand if a stable, sustainable and prosperous Africa is to emerge. This book examines the causes behind African leaders' failure to bring about political stability and economic development. Several factors are assessed, among them, (1) the impact of the one-party system on African societies, (2) deterioration of the economy and the social order, (3) civil war, and (4) poor management of resources, especially diamonds and oil.
