The Pure Love of Madame Guyon

The Pure Love of Madame Guyon

Nancy C. James

University Press of America
2007
nidottu
In seventeenth-century France, Madame Guyon wrote about the concept of "pure love." "Love pure and holy, is a deathless fire," she wrote, and is "ethereal fare." Her popular books spread quickly through Europe and the New World, drawing the attention of Louis XIV and the court at Versailles. The Inquisition attacked her writing and concepts, resulting in her decade long incarceration, including years in the Bastille. Archbishop Fénelon defended Guyon while the leading cleric, Bishop Bossuet, demanded that the Vatican condemn Fénelon and Guyon as heretics. A contemporaneous historian wrote a history of the "Great Conflict" between Guyon, Bossuet, Fénelon, and the Vatican entitled Supplement to the Life of Madame Guyon, which is regarded as having been written in the eighteenth-century. Professor Nancy C. James's translation of this manuscript from the Bodleian Library at Oxford University is featured in this book, coupled with an analysis of the powerful theology of Guyon that influenced both the growth of the Quakers and Romanticism. This history addresses roots of our social conflicts as individual consciences struggle against destructive political power.
The Age of Direct Citizen Participation
Citizen involvement is considered the cornerstone of democratic theory and practice. Citizens today have the knowledge and ability to participate more fully in the political, technical, and administrative decisions that affect them. On the other hand, direct citizen participation is often viewed with skepticism, even wariness. Many argue that citizens do not have the time, preparation, or interest to be directly involved in public affairs, and suggest instead that representative democracy, or indirect citizen participation, is the most effective form of government. Some of the very best writings on this key topic - which is at the root of the entire "reinventing government" movement - can be found in the journals that ASPA publishes or sponsors. In this collection Nancy Roberts has brought together the emerging classics on the ongoing debate over citizen involvement. Her detailed introductory essay and section openers frame the key issues, provide historical context, and fill in any gaps not directly covered by the articles. More than just an anthology, "The Age of Direct Citizen Participation" provides a unique and useful framework for understanding this important subject. It is an ideal resource for any Public Administration course involving citizen engagement and performance management.

Seedlings of Barro Colorado Island and the Neotropics

Seedlings of Barro Colorado Island and the Neotropics

Nancy C. Garwood; Robin B. Foster

Comstock Publishing Associates

Published in Association with the Natural History Museum, London "Few field guides exist to the plants of the American tropics. Guides to the juvenile stages of plants are rare for any part of the world. A guide to identification of tropical seedlings, from trees to herbs, is something to be treasured. Nancy Garwood's lifelong devotion to the study of the ecology and taxonomy of seedlings, combined with Margaret Tebbs's superb illustrations, has given us this first comprehensive guide to juvenile plants in the American tropics."—from the Foreword by Robin B. Foster Seedlings are the future of forest communities. Knowledge of seedling ecology is essential for understanding the local abundance, distribution, and dynamics of individual species and plant populations, for deciphering the mechanisms responsible for the high species diversity in tropical forests, and for developing sound management and conservation plans for tropical forests. In this monumental work of botany, Nancy C. Garwood provides the first comprehensive guide to seedlings in the American tropics, using Barro Colorado Island in Panama as an emblematic locale. More than two decades in the making, this guide is the essential work on the Neotropical seedlings. The review of Neotropical seedlings from 229 plant families is the heart of the book. Descriptions summarize information from 1,243 genera gleaned from accounts of nearly 3,000 species. Families of all major Neotropical woody plants are covered, as well as those that are mostly herbs, aquatic species, parasites and saprophytes. This is the largest compendium of information on tropical seedlings published to date. This guide to the seedling flora of Barro Colorado Island includes illustrations of and keys to 775 species of forest trees, shrubs, lianas, vines, herbs, epiphytes, hemi-epiphytes, and "weedy" plants typical of forest margins and clearings. All genera and 75 percent of the species covered occur broadly across the Neotropics and provide numerous illustrated examples for the family accounts. Key characters needed to identify dicot and monocot seedlings are also described and illustrated, supplemented with an illustrated glossary of descriptive terms. Paired with superb and intricate illustrations by Margaret Tebbs, arranged in 255 plates, Garwood's work enables tropical ecologists, botanists, and systematists to identify Neotropical seedlings that have not yet developed the diagnostic characteristics of the parent plants.
Avoiding the Greener Grass Syndrome – How to Grow Affair–Proof Hedges Around Your Marriage
Extramarital affairs are certainly not the social taboo that they once were, and may be more prevalent now than ever. Unfortunately, Christians are not exempt. With the anonymity of the Internet and the privacy of personal mobile phones, the temptation to cheat on one's spouse has fertile ground to grow. After straying to the other side of this marital fence--and returning to find forgiveness and restoration--Anderson brings this practical book about predicting and preventing an extramarital affair. Based on the principle that the grass is always greener when it's watered, Avoiding the Greener Grass Syndrome focuses on how to grow a beautiful marriage by establishing six protective hedges around it. This second edition includes a new chapter on repairing marriage following infidelity, as well as an appendix considering the Andersons' own marriage before and after the affair from Ron's point of view.
