This is the first major study of the Italian painter Girolamo Pieri Nerli, who spent the last two decades of the nineteenth century in Australia and New Zealand and is best known as a teacher of Frances Hodgkins. The fruit of many years of research, this careful and thoughtful book will be of considerable interest to art historians and the general public. Nerli painted a wide range of subjects in a wide range of styles and is associated with the introduction of Impressionism to the Antipodes. T hough he returned to Italy his most important work, which shows an appealing liveliness with paint, was done in the South Pacific and most of it remains here. His best paintings, full of colour and warmth often with attractive human subjects, have continuing appeal and relevance to both Australia and New Zealand at an important turning point in their cultures. The book includes an introductory text of two chapters, the first on Nerli's life and personality, the second on his painting, accompanied by black and white photographs and reproductions setting the context and evoking the era. This is followed by 40 full-page full-colour reproductions of the most important paintings, each with commentary on the facing page. There will also be a chronology, a bibliography, an appendix reproducing some vivid letters written by Nerli and his wife, and a list of exhibitions.

Considering representations of torture in such television series as 24, Alias, and Homeland; the documentaries Taxi to the Dark Side (2007), Ghosts of Abu Ghraib (2007), and Standard Operating Procedure (2008); and "torture porn" feature films from the Saw and Hostel series, Hilary Neroni unites aesthetic and theoretical analysis to provide a unique portal into theorizing biopower and its relation to the desiring subject. Her work ultimately showcases film and television studies' singular ability to expose and potentially disable the fantasies that sustain torture and the regimes that deploy it.

Looks at how violent women characters disrupt cinematic narrative and challenge cultural ideals. In The Violent Woman, Hilary Neroni brings psychoanalytically informed film theory to bear on issues of femininity, violence, and narrative in contemporary American cinema. Examining such films as Thelma and Louise, Fargo, Natural Born Killers, and The Long Kiss Goodnight, Neroni explores why American audiences are so fascinated-even excited-by cinematic representations of violent women, and what these representations reveal about violence in our society and our cinema. Neroni argues that violent women characters disrupt cinematic narrative and challenge cultural ideals, suggesting how difficult it is for Hollywood-the greatest of ideology machines-to integrate the violent woman into its typical narrative structure.
Criminal Justice and Data Protection

Criminal Justice and Data Protection

The use of traffic and location data in criminal justice is now a common prac-tice in the EU and beyond. Although metadata do not reveal the contents of communications, they allow to draw precise conclusions on the private lives of users, like their everyday habits, places of residence, daily movements and ac-tivities, social relationships, and frequented environments. For this reason, they are largely used by law enforcement to identify promising targets of investiga-tion or as evidence in criminal trials. In the EU, national legislation often pro-vides for the indiscriminate retention of such data, but the compatibility of these mass surveillance regimes with the European human rights framework has been questioned in the case law of the European Court on Human Rights (ECtHR) and the European Court of Justice (CJEU), as well as legal scholar-ship. Nevertheless, the use of unlawfully retained data in criminal proceedings is not usually sanctioned in national criminal procedural systems. This book addresses this problem by inquiring about how communications metadata can be used in criminal proceedings, having regard to the principles of legality and fairness. In particular, through the lens of fairness, the analysis seeks to find some common ground between privacy and data protection regimes on the one hand and criminal procedural rules on the other. To this end, it employs both an interdisciplinary doctrinal research method and a comparative analysis be-tween a limited number of EU Member States. By identifying different stand-ards of fairness for the preventive context, the investigation, and the trial phase, the book highlights gaps in protection and attempts to reconcile these two separate, yet closely related, regimes.

The Film Theory in Practice series fills a gaping hole in the world of film theory. By marrying the explanation of a film theory with the interpretation of a film, the volumes provide discrete examples of how film theory can serve as the basis for textual analysis. Feminist Film Theory and Cléo from 5 to 7 offers a concise introduction to feminist film theory in jargon-free language and shows how this theory can be deployed to interpret Agnes Varda's critically acclaimed 1962 film Cléo from 5 to 7.Hilary Neroni employs the methodology of looking for a feminist alternative among female-oriented films. Through three key concepts—identification, framing the woman’s body, and the female auteur—Neroni lays bare the debates and approaches within the vibrant history of feminist film theory, providing a point of entry to feminist film theory from its inception to today. Picking up one of the currents in feminist film theory - that of looking for feminist alternatives among female-oriented films - Neroni traces feminist responses to the contradictions inherent in most representations of women in film, and she details how their responses have intervened in changing what we see on the screen.

The Film Theory in Practice series fills a gaping hole in the world of film theory. By marrying the explanation of a film theory with the interpretation of a film, the volumes provide discrete examples of how film theory can serve as the basis for textual analysis. Realist Film Theory and Bicycle Thieves offers a concise introduction to realist film theory in jargon-free language and shows how this theory can be deployed to interpret Vittorio De Sica’s 1948 Italian neo realist masterpiece Bicycle Thieves.Hilary Neroni explores the original realist film theorists from the 1940s: André Bazin, Siegfried Kracauer, and Cesare Zavattini, among others. But rather than seeing realist film theory as simply a theory of the past to be moved beyond, the book argues that the prevalence of realism in many different forms within practice and theory suggests the importance of updating this original realist film theory with an understanding of realism that would sustain its viability. Throughout the book, Neroni analyzes neorealist film movements—such as Italian Neorealism, Parallel Cinema of India, and the Iranian New Wave—that challenge mainstream realism with a more radical form that exposes the social order instead of hiding it. Her in-depth investigation of Bicycle Thieves provides a realist methodology that reveals the radicality of its combination of realist techniques, a melodramatic story, and humanist values.

The Oxygen Mask Rule: To Save Your Child, First, Block the Government from Putting You in Jail: Criminal Aspects of Civil Child Abuse and Ne
This edition is the first textbook/reference book of a planned series of books covering, step-by-step, various aspects of the law of child neglect and abuse in Family Courts of the State of New York, from the point of view of defense of parents in such proceedings. The first book of the series provides an in-depth coverage and analysis of the law, government practices and court cases in New York governing "civil" child neglect and abuse proceedings and the flow of information involved in a child protective case, from a single point: the risk, for the parent, of the "civil" child abuse and neglect investigation and court proceedings to grow into a criminal case or result in putting the parent in jail through "civil" proceedings.Understanding that, at all times, the "civil" CPS case is a building tool for a criminal case may prevent the parent from making major errors at the beginning of a CPS investigation which may cause not only separation from the child, but a criminal conviction.Defense of parents in child abuse and neglect proceedings is not taught in law schools and is not tested on bar exams. Governing statutes are often so long and confusing and require an enormous amount of time to connect the dots between various seemingly unconnected statutes and cases. Parents and busy attorneys working on such cases often do not have time to do this kind of research on their own. Connecting the dots is what this book does. The book contains texts of a large number of "civil," but criminal statutes used in child neglect or abuse cases in order to help build a criminal case against parents, with commentary and analysis of constitutional problems in such statutes; trial advocacy techniques to overcome pitfalls in such "civil" proceedings that may lead to a criminal conviction, or to incarceration through a "civil" Family Court-related proceeding; a case study of several cases illustrating how agreements with social services, law enforcements and courts may build a path to jail for a parent; and, some overview of conflicts of interests judges and criminal prosecutors may or do have in Family Court child neglect or abuse cases. The book is the result of the author's 19 years of research and many years of litigation experience in criminal, family and federal courts in civil rights litigation against CPS.The book contains constitutional research of various issues arising from the criminal nature of "civil" child neglect and abuse proceedings in New York Family Courts, including issues of compelled speech and compelled thought disclosure of the parents in various "evaluations," court orders of "cooperation" with social services or "supervision" by social services, and at Family Court Article 10 hearings, relying on what is considered in the U.S. as mandatory legal authorities on constitutional issues - texts of the U.S. Constitution and precedents of the U.S. Supreme Court. For readers' convenience, an extensive table of legal authorities referenced in the book is included.

Welcome to Critical Anatomy. In a study published in 2016, Yoga Journal and Yoga Alliance found that the number of yoga practitioners increased by 50 percent since 2012 - to over 36 million people in just the United States alone. In addition, there are two people interested in becoming a yoga teacher for every one current, existing yoga teacher. This increase in participants and in newly trained yoga teachers has also seen an increase in yoga injury, unfortunately. A recent study found that more than one in every ten participants experienced musculoskeletal pain - which is comparable to the rate of injuries from all other sports. This is up to 10 times higher than previously thought. To add, yoga can also exacerbate existing injury and pain, with over 20 percent of existing injuries made worse by doing yoga. The good news is that we have the power to impact these statistics going forward. By educating ourselves, educating current instructors, and educating future instructors we can build the body of knowledge that is required to mediate injury. We also allow ourselves to pass this knowledge onto the students themselves.
