Mammalogy is the study of mammals from the diverse biological viewpoints of structure, function, evolutionary history, behavior, ecology, classification, and economics. Thoroughly updated, the Sixth Edition of Mammalogy explains and clarifies the subject as a unified whole. The text begins by defining mammals and summarizing their origins. It moves on to discuss the orders and families of mammals with comprehensive coverage on the fossil history, current distribution, morphological characteristics, and basic behavior and ecology of each family of mammals. The third part of the text progresses to discuss special topics such as mammalian echolocation, physiology, behavior, ecology, and zoogeography. The text concludes with two additional chapters, previously available online, that cover mammalian domestication and mammalian disease and zoonoses. New to the Sixth Edition: -Chapters 27 and 28 are included within the text. -Includes new thought-provoking boxes throughout to illuminate current mammalian topics, including platypus electroreception, the origin of Eutherians, terrestrial pollination syndrome, Echidna reproductive anatomy, and many more. -New and updated discussions in the sixth edition include, information on Philodotans, new research about the Miocene Era, new information about the pygmy sperm whale and the Family Iniidae, new information on suborder Odontoceti, updated information about the evolution of strepsirrhine primates, updated statitistics on rabies and lyme disease, and more. -Contains many new photographs and drawings throughout to further clarify key material. -The extensively revised Sixth Edition presents a more thorough use of phylogenetically based mammalian relationships to reflect the recent extraordinary activity in mammalian biology. -Provides additional pedagogical resources to aid in comprehension, including chapter summaries, bolded key terms, and a list of useful books and journal articles for further exploration of key topics located at the end of each chapter. -Accompanied by a full suite of instructor ancillaries, including PowerPoint Lecture Outlines, PowerPoint Image Bank, and Discussion Questions.
The Anglo-Saxon World

The Anglo-Saxon World

The Anglo-Saxon period, stretching from the fifth to the late eleventh century, begins with the Roman retreat from the Western world and ends with the Norman takeover of England. Between these epochal events, many of the contours and patterns of English life that would endure for the next millennium were shaped. In this authoritative work, N. J. Higham and M. J. Ryan reexamine Anglo-Saxon England in the light of new research in disciplines as wide ranging as historical genetics, paleobotany, archaeology, literary studies, art history, and numismatics. The result is the definitive introduction to the Anglo-Saxon world, enhanced with a rich array of photographs, maps, genealogies, and other illustrations. The Anglo-Saxon period witnessed the birth of the English people, the establishment of Christianity, and the development of the English language. With an extraordinary cast of characters (Alfred the Great, the Venerable Bede, King Cnut), a long list of artistic and cultural achievements (Beowulf, the Sutton Hoo ship-burial finds, the Bayeux Tapestry), and multiple dramatic events (the Viking invasions, the Battle of Hastings), the Anglo-Saxon era lays legitimate claim to having been one of the most important in Western history.

Thomas Reid's Theory of Perception

Thomas Reid's Theory of Perception

Ryan Nichols

Clarendon Press
2007
sidottu
The thesis that the mind cannot directly apprehend features of the physical world - what Reid calls the Way of Ideas - is a staple of Early Modern philosophical tradition. This commitment to the direct awareness of, and only of, mental representations unifies the otherwise divergent philosophical systems of Rationalists and Empiricists. Thomas Reid battles against this thesis on many fronts, in particular over the nature of perception. Ryan Nichols lays the groundwork for Reid's theory of perception by developing Reid's unheralded argument against a representational theory of thought, which Nichols applies to his discussion of the intentionality of perceptual states and Reid's appeal to 'signs'. Reid's efforts to preserve common sense epistemic commitments also lead him to adopt unique theories about our concepts of primary and secondary qualities, and about original and acquired perceptions. About the latter pair, Nichols argues that most perceptual beliefs depend for their justification upon inferences. The Way of Ideas holds that sensations are objects of awareness and that our senses are not robustly unified. Nichols develops Reid's counter-proposals by examining his discussion of the evolutionary purpose of sensations, and the nature of our awareness of sensations, as well as his intriguing affirmative answer to Molyneux's questions. Nichols brings to the writing of this book a consummate knowledge of Reid's texts, published and unpublished, and a keen appreciation for Reid's responses to his predecessors. He frequently reconstructs arguments in premise/conclusion form, thereby clarifying disputes that have frustrated previous Reid scholarship. This clarification, his lively examples, and his plainspoken style make this book especially readable. Reid's theory of perception is by far the most important feature of Reid's philosophical system, and Nichols offers what will be, for a long time to come, the definitive analysis of this theory.

As divisions grow across political, economic, and social lines, it often feels as though the only belief shared by many is that “the other side is too far gone.” An authentic difficult dialogue has the power to mobilize our shared humanity in addressing divisions and making transformative change for a more just society. Decades of social science research on meaningful human exchanges can help make sure you not only engage in a difficult dialogue, but that you can engage authentically for the desired goal of transformative change.A difficult dialogue is an exchange between two or more individuals that are likely to disagree or clash. This book will provide a solid foundation for understanding and engaging in difficult dialogues. As you traverse through the pages, you will develop a better understanding of how desires for power and belonging shape each unique difficult dialogue and recognize how experiences with motivation and defensiveness impact difficult dialogues. Further, you will read about case studies of successful dialogues between children and adults and discover the positive benefits of engaging in difficult dialogues with the youth in your life. Finally, you will be given the opportunity to learn about and practice specific skills to prepare for, engage in, and move forward before, during, and after a difficult dialogue. Given the intellectual foundation you will construct while reading this book, this book includes a workbook section to put your newfound skills to work.If you are left wondering “If difficult dialogues are difficult by nature, is it really worth engaging in one?” This book will shed light on the power dialogue grants you to inspire transformative change. Difficult dialogues show us that very few people are truly “too far gone” to communicate, reflect, transform, and act. We have all bore witness to both massive societal issues and their proliferating repercussions. However, there is hope in that each can begin to be solved and dismantled with the comparatively small task of engaging in authentic difficult dialogues. To address societal ills - to grow - we must be courageous, we must be vulnerable, and we must have authentic difficult dialogues. We must do this for a better world, for a more just world, and this book may serve as a foundation and a reference as you progress in your journey.

Nicholas is the first in a series of five books, that bring to life the day-to-day adventures of a young school boy - amusing, endearing and always in trouble. An only child, Nicholas appears older at school than he does at home; his touchingly naive reactions to different situations cut through the preconceptions of adults to result in a formidable sequence of escapades. This first book in the series contains a collection of 19 individual stories in which, despite trying to be good, Nicholas and his friends always seem to end up in some sort of mischief. In the school room, at home and in the playground, their exuberance often takes over and the results are calamitous - at least for their teachers and parents. Whether confusing the photographer hired to take the class picture, rescuing a 'stray' dog, or trying desperately to help the teacher when the school inspector pays a visit, Nicholas always manages to make matters worse. This hilarious and heart-warming book will ignite laughter in children and adults alike. These stories of Nicholas' cureless antics blend a wonderfully imaginative sense of humour with a refreshing take on life, to leave a lingering aftertaste of ageless romantic charm in any reader.
